Today on the blog we bring you Hannah and Michael’s special day, at the beautiful five-star Grand Hotel and Spa, in York. The historic city was already close to the couple’s hearts and they were totally won over by the Edwardian venue’s truly romantic backdrop.

Opting for a gorgeous gold, bronze and blush pink colour scheme complemented by an abundance of candles, petals and even pom poms – this is a wedding exuding understated glamour and charm.

hannah says: We got engaged at home, in our living room, on 13th April. Everything was pretty hectic as we were planning a move to the Middle East with Michael’s job. It was just perfect, I was sat playing with our little boy, Archie, and Michael literally gave me the shock of my life as he appeared with a box and got down on one knee to propose. I couldn’t believe it!

We got married on 4th August 2016 – we didn’t want to wait, plus I had always really wanted a summer wedding. With it being last minute, we were limited by dates but after settling on August, this date just seemed right.

Our wedding venue was The Grand Hotel and Spa, in York. We knew the venue had to be in York as it has a lot of special memories for us – from our first date to the birth of our son, as well as it being my hometown. I fell in love with The Grand Hotel from the moment I saw the grand boardroom; the venue’s elegance and history was just perfect.

Our wedding theme was vintage glamour with a touch of romance. I wanted something with class and sophistication, and once we found the venue, I knew that the grand features of the hotel would work perfectly. As for the colour scheme, this focused on gold, bronze and blush pink.

I found my wedding dress at The Little Pearl Bridal Boutique in North Yorkshire. I always knew this would be my starting place, as I know the owner Diana through a close friend. As soon as I stepped into the boutique I knew my dream dress would be in there, somewhere. After trying every different style and fit, I finally found the one – that butterfly feeling was most certainly there! I chose an Enzoani gown in ivory; a vintage style silk and lace embellished dress. It matched the venue and style of the wedding perfectly. I could not recommend Diana and The Little Pearl more. I had the most magical experience from start to finish and felt like a true princess. Diana didn’t miss a detail and would go out of her way to accommodate any request.

Michael wore a pale blue French Connection suit with a blush pink tie from Reiss. His shirt was from The Kooples and he bought shoes from Jones Bootmaker.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Valentine Cinema: Day 5 – Helena & Simon

February 14th, 2014 | Julia Braime

We’ve reached the big day!  Happy Valentine’s Day to each and every one of you!  Let’s hope you spend the day clearing cards from your doormat, feasting on chocolates and taking deliveries of hand tied bouquets of blousy roses!  Whilst I brush the cobwebs from my own letterbox in anticipation, this morning we join Emma of Story Of Your Day for the final film in our special little week long series of movie magic.

A Wonderful Wedding At Castle Howard from Story of Your Day on Vimeo.

Emma says:  For my last day on Brides Up North I thought I’d show you something a little different. Such is my reputation I am the recommended videographer for many exclusive venues. And for some, like Castle Howard, the only videographer they recommend. I have made the Castle’s corporate film which has been enjoyed by brides looking at the venue for their own wedding. Recently I filmed a wonderful wedding there of Simon and Helena and now Castle Howard shows this film off to couples so they can imagine what their wedding could be like at such an exclusive venue. So while this isn’t a film the couple requested as part of their package they have it as an extra highlights film to enjoy with their family and friends.

On this shoot I wanted to try out a new type of camera – a DLSR – for a cinematic look to my films. I am now sold and from here on in I will be offering this style to all my brides in the future. Perhaps you’ll love it as much as I do.

Emma would like to offer Brides Up North Readers access to her exclusive Valentine’s Day offer.  Visit her website for more details and to celebrate the most romantic week of the year!

Valentine Cinema. Day Four: Kirby & Adam

February 13th, 2014 | Julia Braime

This week, there’s a little movie moment every day at lunchtime, as we count down to Valentine’s Day this Friday, courtesy of Brides Up North Featured Supplier Emma at Story Of Your Day.  Just because I love you.

Is anyone else enjoying these gorgeous little films as much as I am?!

Kirby and Adam – Highlights of their day from Story of Your Day on Vimeo.

Emma says:  I filmed this wedding at Oulton Hall in November with a view to making a Film of the Day and a bridal preparation film. As it happened I changed my package structure in December so that couples could have a Film of The Day with their own choices for their DVDs and a Trailer for both the DVDs and online. Kirby decided she wanted to swap over to this option because her music choices were very important to them.

So this is a ‘Trailer’… something Kirby and Adam can share with their friends and family anytime anywhere. It’s short and sweet but captures the essence of their day perfectly. Their Film of The Day is nearly fifteen minutes long and so I was able to incorporate her bridal prep in detail, meaning she didn’t lose out. And what a lovely message Kirby sent me once she and Adam had watched the film, ‘Words don’t even describe that!I absolutely sobbed! We both love it!’

Valentine Cinema. Day Three: Lynsey and Joe

February 12th, 2014 | Julia Braime

This week, there’s a little movie moment every day at lunchtime, as we count down to Valentine’s Day this Friday, courtesy of Brides Up North Featured Supplier Emma at Story Of Your Day.  Just because I love you.

A wedding in The Lakes from Story of Your Day on Vimeo.

Emma says:  Lynsey and Joe are a gorgeous couple. And what made this film great to do was because I was also working alongside Brides Up North Featured Supplier Cat Hepple Photography. Because don’t direct my couples during their day it’s great to work with Cat who is so inspiring and takes her couples off for amazing portraits.

Linthwaite House Hotel in the Lakes was the perfect setting to sneak off and do just that, with us finding little hideaways to get away from it all for some really emotional moments. This wedding film was meant to be shorter but as with many of my films I get carried away with how fantastic the day is and for me, getting that across in my films is the most important factor.

Valentine Cinema. Day Two: Lydia & Rob

February 11th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Don’t mind us, we’re just interrupting your lunch hour with something beautiful.  This week, there’s a little movie moment every day at lunchtime, as we count down to Valentine’s Day this Friday, courtesy of Brides Up North Featured Supplier Emma at Story Of Your Day.  Just because I love you.

A Gorgeous Wedding at Denton Hall from Story of Your Day on Vimeo.

Emma says:  Did you know that the biggest regret amongst newly weds is not to have a wedding film?  Well it’s true… but having a videographer is still so low down the priority list of many couples. I recently spoke to a bride who’d spent over £6,000 on her dress so had cut her film budget by half. It’s all very well having a beautiful dress and I’m sure the photographs will do it justice, but why compromise on a film which could have given her lifelong living memories of the day?

Here’s today’s Valentine Cinema for Brides Up North.  Lydia and Rob were married at another location that I’m proud to be recommended by, Denton Hall in Ilkley.  Lydia got ready in the morning in the wonderful coach house and then walked up the drive for her civil ceremony in the house. Some ceremonies are quite short so this couple chose to have a film of their ceremony in full, rather than a highlights film.

As well as working closely with many venues like Denton Hall I also pride myself in the relationship I have with other suppliers, especially on the day, so I was thrilled when photographer Karen Ross sent me this note after working with me at this wedding. “After working with several videographers over recent years,  I can honestly say that Emma is the best I have worked with.  It was a real pleasure to work alongside her.  Her work is first rate and her desire for us to work together to obtain the best results possible for the wedding couple was both refreshing and effective.” And that is what it is all about. Everyone working together to achieve the best possibly results for the couple to make their day memorable and enjoyable.

I hope you love today’s short film as much as I do.

Valentine Cinema. A Week Of Love In Motion.

February 10th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Love is in the air!  Being a loved up soon-to-be-wed, it probably hasn’t escaped your notice that it’s Valentine’s Day this Friday.  When considering how to mark the event here on the wedding blog  – because in real life with our baby girl it’ll be a couple of pizzas, a movie and an early night! – I thought it might be nice to share a few movies of our own.  Enlisting the help of Brides Up North Featured Supplier Emma of Story Of Your Day, we’re letting a few special Brides Up North love stories take centre stage as we bring you an extra little lunchtime feature in addition to our usual schedule.  Because we love you.

Lois’ Morning at Rise Hall from Story of Your Day on Vimeo.

Emma says:  I was asked by Julia for a week long feature about my films. At first I was excited, but then I wondered how I could possibly choose five of my favourite films. I’ve recently been looking at the service I provide in the hope of offering everything a bride wants in a Wedding Film Package. This has meant I have been studying a lot of other Videographers in my price range and above. I have found that wedding films can be very formulaic and after a while I got quite frustrated by the fact that they were so similar. So although I’ve made some improvements I am still essentially offering the high end bespoke wedding film service I did before where no film is the same as the last … how can they be? Every wedding is different and every one unique. So I’ve put together a series of films for Brides Up North which, I hope, can demonstrate how I do wedding films differently, creatively and beautifully.

I believe your wedding films should be enjoyed time and time again. That’s why I make short-form wedding films unlike any other.  You’ve probably found your dream venue, your perfect photographer and maybe even your shoes with killer heels.  So now, it’s time to find the right person to make your wedding come to life on film, which can be cherished forever.

In your search for the right filmmaker, you may have found many wedding films seem very formulaic.  My films don’t follow a ’recipe’  because every wedding is different,  every couple is unique and so every story I tell is true to that couple and their wedding only.

I’ll capture the essence of your day and each bespoke film will tell your individual story. Your day will fly by and if you blink you’ll miss it. This is a chance to look back, remember the day and cherish those special moments forever.

Rest assured that you’re in very capable hands. My films are professional looking because they’re filmed by myself and other carefully selected experienced camera crews, using a combination of high-definition and DSLR cameras and beautifully crafted by myself using the best film-editing equipment.

The first this week is a Bridal Preparation Film – many of my couples choose this option so they can catch up with what their loved one got up to in the build up to the ceremony. It can be an emotional time. And Lois’ morning was just that. She married Olympian Alex Smith at Sarah Beeney’s Rise Hall in August this year.  Click here to see the Real Wedding on Brides Up North.

My background has taught me to identify and appreciate special moments, reactions and emotions and my expertise lies in story-telling.   A personable nature and ability to engage easily means I’ll put your guests at ease when I talk to them about your day. Their thoughts and feelings will add flavour to your story. The guests at Lois and Alex’s wedding were literally queuing up to give them their good luck messages.

I was thrilled that Alex and Lois loved their films so much as they were such fun to make. “Thank you so much for the two films you made of our wedding day. We thoroughly enjoyed watching both – especially the film of the day! Alex and I were so glad we chose you to film our wedding day, it was the most fantastic day, which we can now watch over and over! We absolutely love your work, Mr & Mrs Smith.”
