Real Wedding Recap 2012: Big Tops, Bunting, VW Bugs & A Pretty Piggy! A Real Wedding In Yorkshire – Lysette & Michael

December 30th, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Over the festive period I’ll be recapping some of my very favourite Real Weddings from the last 12 months on the wedding blog. It’s been a tough choice! In true Brides Up North style, each wedding featured on these pages is unique, beautiful and gorgeously personal. It’s been an exceptionally fabulous year! Enjoy…

A Real Wedding at Fishlake Mill by Toast Of Leeds

.

.

Am I spoiling you this week or what?! I have another beautiful Real Wedding to share with you this morning sent to me by Shelly of Toast and real bride Lysette.  Now I see a lot of DIY weddings, but Lysette and her family have some serious skills in this department.  Just check out the cake, table decorations and sweetie table!  Professional standard stuff.

.

Watch out for all the delectable details in this fabulous affair, not least the appearance of one perfectly groomed little piggy!

Lysette says:  Michael asked me to marry his on holiday in Turkey in 2009, and we tied the knot on 26th May 2012.  Our Ceremony was held at Cusworth Hall and after drinks, photos and playing with a baby pig on a lead we went on to Fishlake Mill.

We actually chose our reception venue first, Fishlake Mill. The setting was perfect with picturesque rolling fields that go on for miles. It is a beautiful venue that’s both sophisticated yet relaxed. We were eager to be able to put our own stamp on a venue and at the Mill we were able to do that. Graham and Sheena pretty much gave us a free rein to decorate and really welcomed us making us feel at home. As well as the beautiful setting, the windmill itself is truly awesome- a beautiful place to spend our first night as husband and wife. Another bonus for me personal was the presence of animals; horses, peacocks, ducks and even a goat.

.

Cusworth Hall was also an easy choice as it is by far the best place in the area for a non religious wedding. As it is simple the most amazing backdrop for photographs.

We had a bit of an English tea party theme: teapots, teacups and tons of bunting, with purple and florals as our colour scheme.

I bought my dress from Jaynes of Doncaster- It’s an amazing dramatic fishtail style dress. I loved it because of the unusual colour and the masses of detail.

.

My mum made my beautiful crystal & pearl bouquet which included family heirlooms, buttons and brooches. I love that I can keep it forever and if I wanted to in the future I could make it back into jewellery.

I love my bridesmaids dresses almost as much as my own dress. I sourced the material and explained the 50’s style I wanted and then Kelly at Be Envied Bridal Wear made them.

I travelled to the ceremony in a 1979 convertible VW beetle in white. I kept the roof up on the way there. Although after the ceremony I was persuaded to through caution to the wind, forget about my hair and have the roof down. Which was loads of fun and totally worth the mess it made of my hair. The bridesmaids went in a 1967 VW split screen campervan which was fabbo. Both were supplied by Chris at Timeless Classic.

As I am a girl that loves to be in control and hates surprises, I am amazed to say that my two of my favourite parts of my wedding day were surprises. The moment I saw the amazing little pig Lara, that had come to see me on my special day. I love pigs and always have, as a surprise, my mum and Aunty had arranged for a baby pig on a lead to be there after the ceremony. A little bizarre, I know, but it made me (and some of my guests), smile.

.
Receiving a surprise gift from my husband- beautiful purple floral Irregular Choice shoes that he had begged to be made for my giant size 9 feet years ago, they finally have started making them!

All decorations were sourced and created by my mum, my sister and I. Everything from flowers and favours to name cards and table decorations.

.

Our Fingerprint Tree guest book was made by my sister, the guests seemed to like their getting the hands dirty to contribute towards a keepsake for us.

Everyone from the flower girls to the grandparents enjoyed our sweetie table! Mis-matched jars were collected which we filled with various treats for our guests to help themselves.

I made my own cake in various shades of purple, with vintage buttons and a giant teapot to top it off. It was made of brandy soaked fruit cake, victoria sponge and chocolate cake.  Being real foodies, to ensure no one went hungry, Mike insisted we had a three tier pork pie cake consisting of three different flavours.

Madison are a three piece band from Liverpool (madisonparty.co.uk) they kept the dance floor full all night and really made the evening perfect. They even let my sister sing with them, one of my favourite songs “Ironic” by Alanis Morisette, which really meant a lot to me and my family. To keep people dancing when in between the band’s sets, we had one of Mike’s close friends who is a nightclub DJ- Matt Goodwin, who really worked hard to keep everything running smoothly.

We have to give a mention to our photographer – Shelly from Toast – she came along all day and “blended in” so well.  So many people mentioned how good she was, and the photo booth she brought along was great fun!

After the wedding, we went on a mini tour of Italy starting in Venice and moving south to Rome, Naples, Sorrento and Capri. It was truly amazing and we did not want to come home.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to plan well ahead and delegate to bridesmaids, family and friends so that you can relax and enjoy your wedding day.

.

My vintage tea party style wedding was very DIY which enabled me to get exactly what I wanted within budget. It also gave me an immense sense of pride to see everything we’ve done come together so beautifully. I’d definitely recommend brides have a go at a bit of DIY, but don’t forget to stop and relax the day/morning before your wedding.

Candy Floss Kisses! Supplier Showcase: Love Is Sweet Company PLUS 15% OFF For Wedding Blog Readers!

August 1st, 2012 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Yesterday, after a virtuous early morning workout at the pool, I took a two mile detour on the way home to stop at the corner shop for a mix-up.  Not so virtuous, I know, but maybe there is something psychological left over from my swimming lessons days which tells me I need candy just after swimming lengths!

.

Personal psychoanalysis aside, one thing is for sure – I am a big sweetie fan – so when I met Featured Supplier Rachael of Love Is Sweet Company at the last Brides Up North Super Showcase Grand Wedding Exhibition, I knew it was going to be a lasting relationship.  Rachael was even kind enough to fuel my North East Tweet Up wedding industry event with sugar spun candy floss (she was a big hit!) and I can’t recommend her sweet services enough.

.

Let’s meet the lady holding all the love hearts.

.

.

Love Is Sweet Company by Alan Gibson Photography/Dreams Digital Photography

.

.

How did Love Is Sweet Company begin?

.

Love is Sweet Company began after planning my own wedding. I absolutely loved being involved with the wedding industry! I was just finishing my BA (hons) degree in Textiles and Surface design at the time, so thought I’d put this to use in creating decorative and beautiful sweet displays.

.

Sweet bars were fast becoming the new trend for brides and grooms to be. But I found there was a gap for really decorative and personalised designs.

.

.

Alan Gibson Photography/Dreams Digital Photography

.

.

Tell us all about your sweetie table and candy floss cart service?

.

I’m passionate about giving my brides and grooms a really personal service to create beautiful sweet displays. Most of my glass wear is uniquely sourced so no two sweet bars are the same! Sweet bars are designed to match colour schemes or themes, I can add items from vintage tea cups and tea pots to candelabras and flowers and bunting. Give me a theme and I’ll design something to match.

.

For a personal touch I add traditional sweet cones to every bar with your big day details on them, these make fab little favours for your guests to take home.

.

Everyone loves candy floss! Bringing the fun of the fair right to you, our fabulous cart is perfect for every occasion. The cart is hired by the hour and supplies you and your guests with as much floss as you can possibly eat! Freshly spun in front of your eyes, it’s like magic!

.

Why not try our gourmet package? This allows you to get create and add tantalising flavours to your floss. From strawberry and cherry to watermelon and blueberry, yummy! And to top it off you can add popping candy to the top of your floss, for a real exploding experience.

.

.

.

.

What can a bride and groom who book Love Is Sweet Company expect?

.

Every bride and groom can expect a truly unique and personal service. I’m passionate about customer service and feel getting to know my customer is an essential part of this.

.

And of course you can expect that your wedding will be a ‘sweet’ one when hiring Love is Sweet Company.

.

.

What sets you apart from your competition?

.

I offer a number of services all in one place from the sweet bars to candy floss, popcorn to sweet favours.

Unlike some other sweet bar companies I stay with your bar for the hire period to make sure its clean and tidy from beginning to end.

.

I provide my clients with a memorable and personal experience.

.

.

Alan Gibson Photography/Dreams Digital Photography

.

.

Why is booking Love Is Sweet Company a good alternative to wedding favours?

.

Just like the sweet bars I can match your favours to colour schemes and themes. They all come personalised with your guests names on too, which double up as unique place settings.

.

You can order jars filled or empty. Our empty jars work fabulously alongside our sweet bars, allowing guests to fill up their own jars from the bar.

.

.

Alan Gibson Photography/Dreams Digital Photography   Alan Gibson Photography/Dreams Digital Photography

.

.

We hear that you have a popcorn cart too? Tell us about it?

.

I’m proud to welcome a new addition to the Love is Sweet Company family, our Popcorn cart!

Bringing more fun and theatre to your special day. More and more brides are looking for new and exciting features for their weddings. The popcorn cart does exactly that, filling the room with the sweet aroma of fresh popped corn, yum yum!

Candy Kisses! #BUNtweetup Yorkshire: The Details

September 15th, 2011 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Greyeye Photography

.

.

Now, when I started tinkering with blogging way back when – a long time before the wedding blog finally went live in November of last year – I never dreamed that one day I would be hosting a networking event for nearly 100 of Yorkshire’s finest wedding industry professionals.  Hell, even when I announced my plans for a “ Tweet Up” back in June, I was still envisaging me and about ten other lost souls down the local pub.

.

But my little wedding blog has grown in popularity and profile just a bit since then (thank you for reading!) and as these things have a tendency to snowball: one small event became three larger regional events.  Before I knew it I had a HUGE guest list, a very long waiting list and three rather big events supported by a national bridal glossy – the wonderful Wedding Ideas Magazine – to organise.  Yorkshire was the biggest of the lot.  No pressure then.  Time to call in the professionals.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Greyeye Photography

.

.

After a bit of a lie down and a few deep breaths, I put together my team of #BUNtweetup Yorkshire helpers.  These talented bunch are absolute stars and I would recommend them time and time again to brides looking for great suppliers for your wedding. They are friendly, patient, kind, enthusiastic, creative, professional and above all big time fabulous at what they do.

.

They know who they are.  But I want YOU to know who they are.  Huge HUGE thanks to:

.

Dine Services at The Mansion (stunning venue with attentive, slick and professional service); the beautiful, organised, calming and outright fab Katie from Perfect Days Vintage; the gorgeous and very very cool Jo from Vintage Twee; lovely lovely Lynne from Stems Design – an exceptionally talented and enthusiastic florist who decided that an orchid centrepiece just wasn’t good enough – we needed a tree (!); creative cake lady Skye from The Whimsical Cake Company (who made some teeny tiny white rose cupcakes and some very moreish pink cake pops); the fabulous girls at Fancie who branded my scrumptious Brides Up North cakes to the max; the amazing Andy Garfitt and Matt Tordoff of Greyeye Photography who constantly have me in stitches (book them now!); the super cool dreambooth – have a go, you’ll love it!; an amazing string quartet The Dotted Crotchets who rock pop songs better than Katy Perry hersef; the super fun Sean Elliott Photography with his chalk board of one liners; Andrea from the online treasure trove And All Things Nice; Sheree at Cute Maps for, well, making the maps cute; fantastic sport Forever Film on cameras (Spielberg better watch out for this Steven) and the super talented Helen at What A Do Weddings who designed my kick ass goody bags.

.

And I LOVE them.  Each and every one.

.

.

IMG_3478

.

.

Wedding industry hobnobbing is all very well and good, but since this bridal blog is first and foremost for YOU, the real life Brides Up North planning your own wedding, I thought it might be nice to share some of the detail shots in a special blog post before I post all the pictures of the event itself.  After all, these images could easily be part of a candy coloured wedding inspiration shoot.  I hope that you find some ideas here for your own big day.  Any questions at all, or if you simply want to be put in touch with the suppliers who made this all happen (I have a burgeoning little black book of bridal contacts and I am at your service) – you know where to find me.

.

Enjoy the delicious details.  Try not to lick the screen!

Supplier Showcase: The Fine & Funky Events Company

March 28th, 2011 | Brides Up North: UK Wedding Blog

.

Brides Up North talks to Kim from The Fine & Funky Events Company about their fabulous event planning and styling services.  Want your wedding to be extra doubly super duper?  Talk to Ms Groves.

.

.

Fine and Funky

.

.

How did The Fine & Funky Events Company begin?  What is your background?

.
The Fine & Funky Events Company started after planning my own wedding. I totally adored every single second of planning my wedding, I developed a passion for all things wedding related and really enjoyed being able to use my creative flair. My previous background is in office management / project management in the public sector, which sounds very different, but I actually use a lot of the same skills. I’m very organised (not afraid to say my friends call me Monica from Friends!) and have organised numerous celebrations events and other large events throughout my working life. So after my wedding when I found out I was being made redundant, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to combine my two passions, list making and pretty things!

.

.

 Fine and Funky

.

.

What is your favourite thing about being a wedding and event stylist?

.
My absolutely favourite thing is seeing everything coming together. When I’m at a venue and setting up I get such a buzz and tingly feeling, it’s amazing to see the couples day surpassing their expectations and to see their massive grins whilst being surrounded by everyone that loves them. (P.S I’m a massive softy.)

.

.

Fine and Funky

.

.

What services do you offer?

.
I offer wedding planning services, which includes full planning, on the day co-ordination to supplier search. In my planning packages I also offer bespoke packages so couples can tailor a package to suit their needs. My on the day co-ordination services are very popular this year, from couples who are having backyard weddings, to village halls to grand manor houses. Couples have put in so much time and effort planning their wedding they want to make sure that their day runs perfectly.

.
I offer styling packages, these are really fun for me as couples will ask me to provide ideas and inspirations for a rock and roll theme for example and I will go away and research and come up with lots of ideas with costs, and a very funky mood board to boot!

.
In addition to this, I also have lots of items that I hire out. Including vintage crockery hire service which I can cater for up to 200 guests.

.
I also hire out a photo corner which is the first in the North East -  think moustache on sticks, cute signs, wigs, guests love this! So fun!

.
I specialise in vintage themes and have a lot of vintage props that I hire out, a vintage bicycle for a table plan for example Or a vintage typewriter for an alternative guest book.

.
I love anything a bit quirky and different!

.
I don’t just do weddings though, oh no! Celebrating birthdays and other special occasions is becoming more popular than ever, from a swinging 60′s birthday party to a baby naming ceremony!

.

.

Fine and Funky

.

.

Any really memorable weddings that you have styled/ planned?

.
Every wedding or event is so memorable as I really get to know my clients, it’s a very emotional time planning a wedding and I get just as excited as they do! I have lots of lovely clients who really become part of the The Fine & Funky Events Company family and quite often text me, or email, or give me a ring for a chat, it’s lovely!

.

.

Fine and Funky

.

.

Which celebrity’s wedding would you like to style and why?

.
I take a lot of my inspiration from the US and would love to plan a wedding over there one day, perhaps in a vineyard in California, they have amazing backyard weddings over there and that would be my dream! Don’t really mind if they are a celebrity or not, just as long as they love each other and I plan them the day of their dreams that’s all I care about.

.

.

Fine and Funky

.

.

How would you style the Royal Wedding?

.
For a start, I would insist that everyone in the country has the option to attend a street party and the wedding is projected on big screens, so folk can sit with a nice glass of champagne and some fancy sandwiches (no crusts of course)! For the actual wedding, I would defiantly go classic and elegant, lots of beautiful flowers everywhere, white hydrangeas, flower curtains hanging in all the gardens, flower pomanders hanging everywhere at different heights, beautiful tall centrepieces. I think a classic and elegant feel to the wedding would really represent them as a couple. Everyone in the industry will be watching the wedding as no doubt lots of trends will follow.

.
I am in total admiration of them asking for donations to the 26 charities they support, think that its very fitting of the situation around the world at the moment.

.

.

Fine and Funky

.

.

Did you style your own wedding?  Tell us a bit about it…

.
Would you like a little look? You can see piccys of me at the top and bottom of this post! Chris and I spent what seemed like forever venue searching, we stuck to our guns though and held out till we found a venue that really represented us, we knew what type of day we wanted practically from the first moment we met, fun, informal, relaxed and surrounded by are amazing family and friends. I still get butterflies now thinking about our wedding day, words cannot describe how perfect it was, how could it be anything less when I married my best friend, I did not stop smiling all day!

.

.

Fine and Funky

.

.

Is this your dream job?  What would be your alternative career?

.
Hell yeah it is! It’s incredibly hard work, working 7 days a week, 14 hour days but I love every moment and feel incredibly lucky to be doing what I’m doing.

.
Oooooo if I wasn’t a wedding planner / stylist think I would love to be Kirsty Allsopp making her homemade TV series, would be so much fun! Or I would love to be in Glee, can’t sing or dance but would have a blast! Although I’m 30 this year so might be a little late to start my career in musicals!

.

.

Fine and Funky

.

.

We hear you do very special sweetie tables, can you tell us a bit about them?

.
The Fine & Funky Events Company now does Sweetie Tables and Dessert Bars!

.
Sweetie Tables are very popular at evening receptions at weddings, or birthday parties and christenings. You can now add popcakes to your sweetie table as well from the amazing Popcake Kitchen! Sweetie Tables are fab, they look amazing and kids but mainly adults it seems go wild for them! Think old fashioned white mice, cola cubs, lips, bon bons, the list goes on! I was one of the first to offer this service in the North East and they are still proving very popular!

.
The dessert bars are fab, some couples have had this as an alternative to serving a dessert, others instead of a sweetie table on the evening, very much up to the couple. Think mini sherry trifles in shot glasses, macaroons, mini bakewell tarts, victoria sponge, cupcakes sprinkled with popping candy, they are just such fun and very much a talking point of the day as something totally different. I’m the first company in the North East to offer this service.

.
Both these services includes my styling and set up.

.

.

Fine and Funky

.

.

What’s all this about vintage tea parties at Danby Castle?

.
I work very closely with Carolyn from Danby Castle, who is amazing! Not only did she put up with me being a total bridezilla during my own wedding planning but she is so open to trying new ideas and we work so well together. The Vintage Tea Party Package is a collaboration between Fine & Funky Events, Danby Castle and Arches Cookery School (who are out of this world) Couples need not worry about a thing, nearly everything is sorted for them and the package is so quirky and unique, it’s been a massive success, prices start from £4000 for 60 guests, inc venue hire, catering, venue decor and styling.

.

.

Fine and Funky

.

.

How can Brides Up North find out more or get in touch with you?

.

.

Anything else my readers should know?

.
I’m extremely passionate about what I do and you will find me very personable, a friend, and most importantly a great listener. Your day is about you two as a couple and I will do all I can to ensure you both have the perfect day, whatever that may be, from a chill out festival theme on a farm to a classic elegant ballroom wedding.

.
If you want to pop along and say hi, I’m exhibiting at these wedding fayres.

Fine and Funky

.
