when in rome. a sumptuous wedding at swinton park – victoria & matthew

For today’s real wedding, we’re getting swept away by the enchantment of Victoria and Matthew’s beautiful wedding set in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

Combining the tradition of a church ceremony with the decadence of a castle, hotel and stately home for their celebrations – this is a wedding with class and sophistication in spades, and we simply adore every little detail from their special day!

victoria says: Matthew proposed during a surprise break away to Rome, leaving me guessing right until check in at the airport as to where we were going. Little did I know that in the luggage that I’d been carting around, on and off trains and through the airport, there was an engagement ring.

The hotel in Rome had a balcony that overlooked the city and the view was incredible. Every day the hotel staff kept leaving bottles of champagne and strawberries in the room and I had no idea why. I just thought it was all part of their hospitality and even said that we should stay in this hotel more often, as I felt like a princess.

We visited many historical sights and enjoyed sightseeing around the city, including a visit to the Vatican. On the final evening, I was so exhausted from walking around that I suggested that we should stay at the hotel for a meal, but Matthew insisted that we should go out. When we arrived back at the hotel, the balcony had been lit up with candles and there was a large parcel wrapped up on the table with a bottle of champagne. I was very surprised and I thought Matthew was too. Matthew insisted I open the parcel. Initially I thought it was a gift from the hotel, because of all the surprises they kept sending to us each night. I carefully tore the paper and inside was a canvas with photographs of Matthew’s niece and nephews holding up signs reading, “Will you marry Uncle Matthew please?” At this point, Matthew got onto one knee and pulled a ring box from his pocket and asked me to marry him. Of course, I said yes!

A few days after we returned home, I received a postcard stamped from Vatican City. Matthew had sent me a postcard when we were in the Vatican City saying that by now he hopes that I am his fiancée and can’t wait to marry me. I didn’t even notice that he had done this and I was with him the whole time. This came as a great surprise. Just as well I said yes!

We got married on 3rd August 2015. The ceremony took place at St. Joseph and St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, Richmond, North Yorkshire. We chose this church as it was fairly local to our reception venue – Swinton Park in Masham, North Yorkshire. Our local priest, Father Butters was able to conduct the ceremony too, which made it even more special.

We had a Roman Catholic ceremony with two readings. The first was from the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians, read by the mother of the groom and then then a reading from the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians read by my godmother. We also had bidding prayers that were read by our eight-year-old nephew Louis, and my cousin Michelle.

Yorkshire Venues In Belle Bridal Magazine (1)Yorkshire Venues In Belle Bridal Magazine (1)

Feature in Belle Bridal Magazine

It’s a hard job, but someone’s got to do it!  As the editor these pretty pages I spend my days immersed in designer look books, wedding magazines and glued to my computer screen tracking down the latest trends and ideas in the wedding world, so my readers don’t have to.  I also spend a lot of time meeting with industry insiders to discover the best services, shops and venues for brides based in the North of the UK.  Super sleuth that I am, Belle Bridal Magazine sent me off to Yorkshire early last year with one mission, and one mission only – to check out their best wedding venues and come back to divulge all.

This county has so many stunning spaces for weddings and events that it’s almost impossible to choose between them (that venue hunt might take a long time!) but I share my top tips from the article – plus a few more favourite places – below.

Think Yorkshire and what comes to mind?  Flat caps, rolling countryside, whippets?  You’d be right, but as well as the ale and Yorkshire pud, this beautiful county – named as the top European destination by Lonely Planet for 2014 – is also fabulously diverse.  Yes, it has it’s fair share of pubs (not necessarily a bad thing, more on that later) but it’s also home to stunning vistas, crumbling stately piles, chic city venues and fairy tale castles.  There’s plenty to discover, but these are some of my very favourite spots.

Allerton Castle

Allerton Castle by Chris Chambers Photography

allerton castle (Knaresborough)

With seriously impressive features and beautiful surroundings this 18th century gothic castle will take your breath away.  Dine, the Yorkshire based experts in providing exceptional weddings and events, work in partnership with the Allerton Castle team to deliver faultless perfection to ensure your wedding is special.

the mansion (Leeds)

From The Mansion‘s tree-lined drive to the sweeping staircase, panoramic park views and immaculately restored interior spaces, this exclusive use, boutique venue is wedding day perfection.  One for the fashionistas, this city chic space has a stellar reputation for fantastic events and wedding

mansion

The Mansion by Joel Skingle Photography

swinton park (Masham)

This privately owned hotel is the perfect romantic retreat, and good food is guaranteed, for as well as fine dining Swinton Park boasts its own cookery school!  Set in 200 acres of parkland, this secluded, ivy covered castle provides the perfect setting for a fairy-tale wedding.  And if it all gets too much for you, just head to their superb spa… bliss.

hotel du vin (York)

This beautiful hotel in York city centre is housed within a Grade II-listed building that dates back to the early 19th century. With 44 stylish bedrooms and suites, trademark bistro, bar and private dining rooms along with a terrace, courtyard and inner forum for alfresco dining Hotel Du Vin York is a cool and contemporary sanctuary within the city’s ancient walls.

the feversham arms (Helmsley)

Cosy yet contemporary, this former public house and secluded luxury retreat in the market town of Helmsley is perfect for a boutique wedding.  With stunning menus and an award winning spa, I’d have the honeymoon at The Feversham Arms too!

thorp perrow (Bedale)

An authentic private stately pile, with amazing manicured gardens and space for a grand marquee, this beautiful property wows all year round, but my top tip is a springtime celebration when the bluebell walk at Thorp Perrow will be in full bloom.  Divine!

Middleton Lodge (c) Hayley Baxter Photography (3)

Middleton Lodge by Hayley Baxter Photography

middleton lodge (Richmond)

Fancy your own country mansion for your wedding weekend?  Middleton Lodge has that covered.  Boasting Yorkshire’s only outdoor licensed space in the midst of rolling countryside, Middleton Lodge and its 250 acre Georgian estate offers the perfect setting for a traditional country wedding party with a modern twist.

denton hall (Ilkely)

An authentic stately pile, nestled right in the heart of God’s own county, Denton Hall offers an idyllic rural settic in 2,500 acres of stunning private parkland. Just add your own Mr Darcy, and you are good to go!

East Riddlesden Hall (c) Lissa Alexandra Photography (18)

East Riddlesden Hall by Lissa Alexandra Photography

east riddlesden hall (Keighley)

With ceremony space in the Great Hall of this historic Grade I house and a reception for up to 180 in their fabulous converted barn, the National Trust estate at East Riddlesden Hall offers plenty of options for creating a bespoke and beautiful day.

bolton castle (Wensleydale)

Bolton Castle is a spectacular medieval fortress, preserved in outstanding condition and situated in the heart of peaceful Wensleydale. For a celebration full of atmosphere, Bolton Castle has to be at the top of your wish list.

Lee Scullion Photography for Braime Pressings (110)

Braime Pressings by Lee Scullion Photography

braime pressings (Leeds)

Ok so, I’m a little biased, but this authentic vintage venue in the heart of Leeds has been in my husband’s family for 125 years and only now is it open to the public for weddings and events.

The working factory’s stunning listed canteen, used to host public meetings and dance parties during two World Wars (with a separate upper floor for ladies!),  has stood almost untouched for 50 plus years.  With its original historic features, marble bar and parquet flooring, Braime Pressings offers a completely unique space for wedding celebrations.

the kp (Hull)

A stylish and contemporary space that can accommodate up to a whoopping 400 guests, The KP is one fabulous blank canvas for a bride and groom who want to create their dream day.

a winter wedding at Priory Cottages (c) Helen Russell Photography (52)

Priory Cottages by Helen Russell Photography

priory cottages (Wetherby)

Like a little piece of Provence in Yorkshire, this exclusive use barn and marquee venue is my destination of choice for summer soirees, and oh so cosy for winter weddings too.  A huge bonus is the cottage accomodation on site at Priory Cottages which means that you and your party can make a whole weekend of the festivities.

oulton hall (Leeds)

With impressive grounds and an incredible 18th Century mansion on your doorstep, it’s hard to look past Oulton Hall. Factor in the serene spa space and beautifully manicured golf course for him indoors and I’m pretty much sold.

Nostell_BuN-004

Nostell Priory by Peter Boyd Photography

nostell priory (Wakefield)

Space for ceremonies in the huge house, an outdoor drinks reception in the rose garden or orangery and a wedding breakfast in the newly refurbished riding school, beautiful Nostell Priory has it all.  Set in gorgeous National Trust grounds and with the fabulous Dine events team on site, this is the stuff that dreams are made of.

the deep (Hull)

The Deep is one of the most exciting aquariums in the world, home to a whopping 3,500 fish including a pair of Green sawfish, magnificent sharks and rays, but also one of the coolest wedding venues in the UK. Make a splash by choosing somewhere completely different for your celebration.

Owl Always Love You! Berry Red & A Feathered Friend For A Real Winter Wedding At Swinton Park – Rachael & Neil

May 22nd, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

I normally like to get keep the weddings I feature relatively seasonal.  You know, falling leaves in the Autumn, bright skies in Spring time and all that.  But honestly, Rachael and Neil’s gorgeous winter wedding with it’s deep berry reds (and a feathered friend – the wedding blog seems awash with them this week!) was too good to save until the darker nights roll in.  And who knows if we even have seasons anymore anyway!

.

If you are looking ahead to a Christmas celebration, get ready to get excited!  With images by Brides Up North Featured Supplier Richard Wynn Davies and featuring the work of some of my favourite Yorkshire suppliers, let’s get stuck in!

Rachael says:  Neil asked my to marry him on the August Bank holiday 2011, at Golden Acre Park in North Leeds, and we were married on 27th December 2012 at Swinton Park, Masham, North Yorkshire.  We both fell in love with the venue after it was recommended by a work colleague who’d been to a wedding there before.

We had a winter red theme but we also had an owl fly our rings down the aisle so to tie in with this we had the Harry Potter classical music and Harry Potter table names along with chocolate owl wedding favours.

Both Neil and I drove up to the venue to get ready in the morning, we got married at the venue so didn’t need to travel at all during the day which was perfect for our winter wedding!

.

I loved getting ready with my mum and bridesmaids, although we ended up a little rushed!

I chose a gorgeous dress from Amelia Elliott bridal shop on Horsforth Town Street, Leeds. The ladies running the shop, Vanessa & Caroline, had designed the dress and made the whole experience so enjoyable from start to finish.

My bridesmaids wore full length chiffon dresses by Impression in claret. We got the dresses from Confetti & Lace in Leeds.  Our groomsmen wore charcoal suits hired from Yorkshire Menswear with ivory and claret cravats.

David Fields was my hair dresser and did an excellent job! He was a genuinely lovely man and made the entire process of getting ready really enjoyable! He even chipped in and poured the champagne for us.

I had a bouquet of red roses with frosted berries and dark leaves by Sasha at Rose & Co Flowers, Yorkshire who provided all of our flowers and chairs covers and did an excellent job with the decorations!

.

My bridesmaids had ivory & red bouquets with roses and orchids amongst other flowers and frosted berries and the chair covers along the aisle were decorated with frosted pine cones.

We used the Swinton Park Birds Of Prey Centre to arrange for an owl to fly our wedding rings down the aisle to the best man! This was a lovely touch and lightened the mood at the ceremony.

We had an amazing chocolate wedding cake from Patisserie Viennoise covered in Belgian milk, white and dark chocolate.  The cake was chocolate from top to bottom!

We had a Ceilidh for our evening entertainment – Cobblers Wax. They provided great entertainment and got everybody up dancing.  We also had a magician at our drinks reception, Anthony Heaton, who our guests thought was excellent.

The entire day went exactly to plan thanks to the amazing staff at Swinton Park. If we had to choose one special moment we both loved letting off Chinese lanterns outside after the ceilidh.

After the wedding we went to Dubai for new year followed by a week in Sri Lanka touring the sites and a week relaxing in the Maldives.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to plan things well in advance to avoid last minute stress and don’t worry about anything on the day, just enjoy every minute of it!

Swinton Park is a castle hotel, an ancestral home and an outstanding wedding venue. Surrounded by two hundred acres of parkland in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, the secluded hotel and grounds enjoy a gorgeous setting.  A wide range of function rooms for a ceremony, wedding breakfast or celebration are available, along with thirty guest bedrooms.  The hotel’s kitchen (which has won some awards in it’s time) places an emphasis on seasonal fresh produce sourced from the surrounding family estate and the hotel’s walled garden.  They also have an excellent wine list, which is very important!
