While all some brides have ever dreamt of is the traditional church wedding followed by an elegant hotel reception, others desire something more unusual for their ‘I do’ setting.
Thanks to relaxed wedding laws, the options for couples are now pretty much endless – from cinemas and art galleries to barns, warehouses and even treehouses; there really is venue to suit all styles, personalities and interests.
Perfect for marine fans out there, or those that simply want to stray on the other side of tradition, this spectacular venue promises ceremony and reception spaces like no other, with couples able to take their vows in-front of rare sea-life filled tanks, or even have a waddle of penguins observe their ring exchange. And don’t even get us started on the photo opportunities!
We’ll now hand over to The Deep’s events team to find out all that this extraordinary venue has to offer…
How would you describe the look and feel of the venue and what style of weddings does it suit?
the deep say: With amazing aquaria, stunning corals and bold architecture, The Deep is one of the most unique venues in Yorkshire. From traditional to romantic, or even a little bit quirky, any theme can find a home with us.
Can you tell us about the ceremony and reception areas and how many guests the venue can cater for?
We can accommodate celebrations of varying sizes – whether your wedding is a small, intimate affair or something much bigger, we have some great spaces for you to celebrate.
The Deep is licenced to hold civil ceremonies around the attraction, and so couples can choose from a range of locations to say ‘I do’. These include Endless Ocean alongside majestic green sawfish, sharks and rays, the dark and intimate Cool Seas, or in front of the quirky Gentoo penguins. We can also host ceremonies in the fourth-floor glass Observatory, which boasts views over Hull and the Humber.
What makes The Deep a special wedding venue and sets it apart from others?
The Deep offers unusual and distinctive locations for wedding celebrations and the photographs. Couples can be captured walking through the underwater tunnel, with the beautiful jellyfish or maybe a catfish or two! Then head to the Observatory at sunset to capture romantic moments like no other.
How can your staff help to make the planning process easier and the big day amazing?
Our dedicated events team pride themselves on attention to detail and ensuring the most important day of your life goes without a hitch.
Do you have any accommodation or getting ready areas at the venue?
There are rooms on site that can be used for changing subject to availability. The Deep doesn’t have its own accommodation but is close to several hotels that suit a variety of budgets.
Tell us about your catering options at the venue…
Your first meal as a married couple is extremely important, so be assured that our in-house chefs can muster up a masterpiece. From simple canapés to a three-course dinner, all our food is sourced locally, prepared in-house and served to you by our experienced corporate team. We do not allow external catering to be brought onto site, but we are able to cater for special dietary requirements including gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan.

Feature in Belle Bridal Magazine
It’s a hard job, but someone’s got to do it! As the editor these pretty pages I spend my days immersed in designer look books, wedding magazines and glued to my computer screen tracking down the latest trends and ideas in the wedding world, so my readers don’t have to. I also spend a lot of time meeting with industry insiders to discover the best services, shops and venues for brides based in the North of the UK. Super sleuth that I am, Belle Bridal Magazine sent me off to Yorkshire early last year with one mission, and one mission only – to check out their best wedding venues and come back to divulge all.
This county has so many stunning spaces for weddings and events that it’s almost impossible to choose between them (that venue hunt might take a long time!) but I share my top tips from the article – plus a few more favourite places – below.
Think Yorkshire and what comes to mind? Flat caps, rolling countryside, whippets? You’d be right, but as well as the ale and Yorkshire pud, this beautiful county – named as the top European destination by Lonely Planet for 2014 – is also fabulously diverse. Yes, it has it’s fair share of pubs (not necessarily a bad thing, more on that later) but it’s also home to stunning vistas, crumbling stately piles, chic city venues and fairy tale castles. There’s plenty to discover, but these are some of my very favourite spots.
Allerton Castle by Chris Chambers Photography
allerton castle (Knaresborough)
With seriously impressive features and beautiful surroundings this 18th century gothic castle will take your breath away. Dine, the Yorkshire based experts in providing exceptional weddings and events, work in partnership with the Allerton Castle team to deliver faultless perfection to ensure your wedding is special.
the mansion (Leeds)
From The Mansion‘s tree-lined drive to the sweeping staircase, panoramic park views and immaculately restored interior spaces, this exclusive use, boutique venue is wedding day perfection. One for the fashionistas, this city chic space has a stellar reputation for fantastic events and wedding
The Mansion by Joel Skingle Photography
swinton park (Masham)
This privately owned hotel is the perfect romantic retreat, and good food is guaranteed, for as well as fine dining Swinton Park boasts its own cookery school! Set in 200 acres of parkland, this secluded, ivy covered castle provides the perfect setting for a fairy-tale wedding. And if it all gets too much for you, just head to their superb spa… bliss.
hotel du vin (York)
This beautiful hotel in York city centre is housed within a Grade II-listed building that dates back to the early 19th century. With 44 stylish bedrooms and suites, trademark bistro, bar and private dining rooms along with a terrace, courtyard and inner forum for alfresco dining Hotel Du Vin York is a cool and contemporary sanctuary within the city’s ancient walls.
the feversham arms (Helmsley)
Cosy yet contemporary, this former public house and secluded luxury retreat in the market town of Helmsley is perfect for a boutique wedding. With stunning menus and an award winning spa, I’d have the honeymoon at The Feversham Arms too!
thorp perrow (Bedale)
An authentic private stately pile, with amazing manicured gardens and space for a grand marquee, this beautiful property wows all year round, but my top tip is a springtime celebration when the bluebell walk at Thorp Perrow will be in full bloom. Divine!
Middleton Lodge by Hayley Baxter Photography
middleton lodge (Richmond)
Fancy your own country mansion for your wedding weekend? Middleton Lodge has that covered. Boasting Yorkshire’s only outdoor licensed space in the midst of rolling countryside, Middleton Lodge and its 250 acre Georgian estate offers the perfect setting for a traditional country wedding party with a modern twist.
denton hall (Ilkely)
An authentic stately pile, nestled right in the heart of God’s own county, Denton Hall offers an idyllic rural settic in 2,500 acres of stunning private parkland. Just add your own Mr Darcy, and you are good to go!
East Riddlesden Hall by Lissa Alexandra Photography
east riddlesden hall (Keighley)
With ceremony space in the Great Hall of this historic Grade I house and a reception for up to 180 in their fabulous converted barn, the National Trust estate at East Riddlesden Hall offers plenty of options for creating a bespoke and beautiful day.
bolton castle (Wensleydale)
Bolton Castle is a spectacular medieval fortress, preserved in outstanding condition and situated in the heart of peaceful Wensleydale. For a celebration full of atmosphere, Bolton Castle has to be at the top of your wish list.
Braime Pressings by Lee Scullion Photography
braime pressings (Leeds)
Ok so, I’m a little biased, but this authentic vintage venue in the heart of Leeds has been in my husband’s family for 125 years and only now is it open to the public for weddings and events.
The working factory’s stunning listed canteen, used to host public meetings and dance parties during two World Wars (with a separate upper floor for ladies!), has stood almost untouched for 50 plus years. With its original historic features, marble bar and parquet flooring, Braime Pressings offers a completely unique space for wedding celebrations.
the kp (Hull)
A stylish and contemporary space that can accommodate up to a whoopping 400 guests, The KP is one fabulous blank canvas for a bride and groom who want to create their dream day.
Priory Cottages by Helen Russell Photography
priory cottages (Wetherby)
Like a little piece of Provence in Yorkshire, this exclusive use barn and marquee venue is my destination of choice for summer soirees, and oh so cosy for winter weddings too. A huge bonus is the cottage accomodation on site at Priory Cottages which means that you and your party can make a whole weekend of the festivities.
oulton hall (Leeds)
With impressive grounds and an incredible 18th Century mansion on your doorstep, it’s hard to look past Oulton Hall. Factor in the serene spa space and beautifully manicured golf course for him indoors and I’m pretty much sold.
Nostell Priory by Peter Boyd Photography
nostell priory (Wakefield)
Space for ceremonies in the huge house, an outdoor drinks reception in the rose garden or orangery and a wedding breakfast in the newly refurbished riding school, beautiful Nostell Priory has it all. Set in gorgeous National Trust grounds and with the fabulous Dine events team on site, this is the stuff that dreams are made of.
the deep (Hull)
The Deep is one of the most exciting aquariums in the world, home to a whopping 3,500 fish including a pair of Green sawfish, magnificent sharks and rays, but also one of the coolest wedding venues in the UK. Make a splash by choosing somewhere completely different for your celebration.

March 18th, 2014 | Julia Braime
This afternoon it’s wetsuits at the ready and off to East Yorkshire to join Claire and Dave for their celebration at Brides Up North Featured Supplier venue The Deep in Hull. Styling their big day, Claire kept things simple – and saved herself some pennies too – by letting their unusual and extraordinary wedding venue do the talking.
Images by Chris Bailey Photography.
Claire says: Dave’s parents live in Portsmouth and we often travel down there with our sons for holidays by the sea, ice creams and all! It was a beautiful summer’s day and we’d spent it on the sea front amongst the two penny falls, eating candy floss and winning teddy bears for the boys. On the pier we stood admiring the view and out Dave pulled a pretty necklace with the words “Marry me” engraved on it. I was beginning to think he’d never ask! I began planning straight away, in case he changed his mind! We both had pretty unconventional ideas when it came to weddings and we knew from the start that we wanted something a little bit different.
We were married on 27th October 2013 at The Deep in Hull. We looked around at various wedding venues and as beautiful as they were, it wasn’t quite what we wanted. Then we came across The Deep. We fell in love with the venue instantly, the atmosphere was so serene and we wanted to create a real "wedding experience" that our guests would always remember. The huge tanks blew us away and the "ice tunnel" that was to become my aisle, was especially stunning. We had definitely found the unique venue we were looking for. They were so welcoming and their attention to detail made me sure the day would go perfectly.
The staff at The Deep did an amazing job of putting everything together and so many guests commented on how much they enjoyed it.
I really like natural colours and so I chose dark champagne, browns and coffee colours for the day. As we were getting married later on in the day and having a candlelit reception I thought this colour would complement our autumn wedding perfectly.
On the morning of the wedding I had all the people I love around me. My bridesmaids were with me and my mum was in the hotel room next door! As the wedding wasn’t until 5pm, we spent all day getting ready, giggling, drinking champagne and doing hair and makeup. It was such a special time having them around me, I think that was the reason I was fairly calm and relaxed (that and the champagne!)
I wore an A-line light ivory Maggie Sottero dress with a little crystal detail from The Bridal Barn in Stafford. I wanted something really simple and got overwhelmed by the amount of dresses I tried on with a lot of detail. My dress was perfect for me as it reflected my every day style. I wore a lovely tear drop silver necklace by Leslie Davis from a little boutique in Stoke on Trent.
My bridesmaids wore champagne and mocha coloured dresses, bought from Debenhams and found on eBay. As a hairdresser I had specific ideas on how I wanted my bridesmaids to look, they both had matching chignons and pretty hair slides. They looked absolutely beautiful!
I have a bit of a hoarder when it comes to make up! So my bridesmaids had a great time rooting through my collection and using all of my lotions and potions! We all did our own makeup and I think by doing this, we all felt comfortable with how we looked. I’m not sure I would’ve felt the same with someone else making the choice for me.
I made my own bouquet as I like to think of myself as fairly creative and saved a heap of money doing the flowers myself. I was so pleased with the results and it was something the bridesmaids could keep after the wedding.
Our photos were taken by Chris Bailey Photography of Cottingham. We were lucky enough to get some shots outside The Deep after the ceremony, just as the sun was setting. It was a bit on the chilly side, but our photographer was so great at getting the shots done, that we were back in the warm in no time. The guests went up to the observatory and we were able to get some great shots in front of the huge tanks.
My special moment of the day was singing to my new husband instead of a first dance. Everyone was so surprised! I sang “The Story” by Brandon Carlisle and the words are especially emotional, I cracked a little half way through, but all the guests gave me the biggest cheer of encouragement that I was able to carry on! I’ll be in trouble for saying it, but even the men were in tears, although I’m sure they’ll all deny it!
We didn’t have a wedding cake, but made up for it by stacking chocolate donuts and cupcakes on a stand and to be honest, I don’t think anyone even noticed the missing cake! We danced the night away until the early hours and all of our guests were in the party mood.
The day after the wedding, we took the boys away for the night to the Alton Towers resort, where we stayed in a Peter Rabbit themed room which was like a rabbit burrow! We are planning a honeymoon to coincide with my 30th birthday and our one year wedding anniversary to Disneyland Florida. We love spending time together as a family and couldn’t image a honeymoon without them.
My top tip for other Brides Up North would to be savvy! Don’t fooled into buying the most expensive of everything. We stuck to a tight budget and saved money by customising and creating. By doing this, we got our dream wedding for under £5000. Remember to cherish each moment, and don’t stress! It goes by so quickly that before you know it it’s over and you’ll wonder what all the nerves and worrying was about!
Congratulations Claire & Dave!

Even powered by all the pretty get through here on a daily basis at Brides Up North HQ, we can’t be everywhere at once (although with 18, and counting, bridal events planned for this year alone we really are trying)! Unfortunately – sob! – we don’t have a date in our diaries to visit our lovely East Yorkshire readers this season, so rather than leave you high and dry (geddit?) I’ll hand you over to our friends and Brides Up North Featured Suppliers at The Deep. Hull’s biggest Wedding Fayre is back! Now in its fourth year, The Deep will open its doors to future brides, grooms, their friends and families on Thursday 23rd January 2014 from 7pm to 10pm.

So come along and see what this exciting venue can offer you and don’t forget, you can talk to The Deep’s dedicated events team about what you are looking for.
We have some stunning locations within the venue where couples can get married, including in front of the Endless Oceans window with the majestic rays, green sawfish and other exotic species swimming by. Why not get married in our stunning glass observatory with amazing views overlooking the River Humber?
Experience the best the region has to offer with over 45 exhibitors showcasing their wares as well as enjoying our catwalk shows and sampling canapés from The Deep’s own Two Rivers Restaurant.
