Jade and Mike’s engagement may have begun with a few flying sparks – mainly due to the fact their car broke down and they had to hitch a lift all the way to Edinburgh with the AA – but it culminated in the magical glow of wedding celebrations on Bonfire Night weekend, with a gorgeous colour scheme of ‘autumnal sparkle’.
The burnt oranges and deep reds synonymous with this time of year were carried through every detail, from the thoughtful and very pretty hand-blown and leaf-decorated glass coasters given to each of the guests, to the table centrepieces, which featured gold-sprayed pine cones and luxuriously large lanterns glowing with candlelight. Even the gorgeous Sottero and Midgely wedding gown features a Swarovski crystal pattern reminiscent of falling autumn leaves and, in champagne, was the perfect colour to complement the warmth and sparkle of the well-thought-out scheme.
We love the hand-written cards Jade and Mike gave to each guest – each one explaining why that person is particularly special to them and causing a few happy tears, we don’t doubt. If your wedding day isn’t the time to proclaim your love, then when is?! Here’s Jade to tell us more …

jade says: We got engaged in February 2012. It was our seven-year anniversary and we had planned a long weekend in Edinburgh to celebrate. Mike aimed to propose once we got to the romantic city of Edinburgh, but nerves got the better of him and, just before we were due to set off, Mike got down on one knee. We then set off to Edinburgh but our car broke down on the way and we ended up with the AA! However, the sparkle of the ring still made it a pleasant journey.
We got married on Saturday 4th November 2017. We chose this date as we love the magic, excitement and sparkle of Bonfire Night.
We got married and had our reception at The Priests House, Barden Tower. Mike found this venue whilst on one of his regular cycle rides in the countryside. The venue has just been renovated and you can now have a ceremony and reception in the beautiful old chapel of the Bolton Abbey estate. We’d definitely recommend the venue – Debbie was great at organising a slick wedding.
Our theme was a whimsical ‘autumnal sparkle’, which included leaf shapes with hints of burnt oranges and deep reds, but everything had a touch of sparkle gold shimmer. The colour scheme was important to me and I wanted everything to match, so I used Brides Up North to get lots of inspiration. As it was the weekend of Bonfire Night, we wanted to embrace the warmth and sparkle of this time of year – including in my dress!
My dress was by American designer Sottero & Midgley. I chose this designer for their whimsical princess style. The chosen dress was called Amelie, which was a breath-taking princess gown with a ball gown skirt, featuring a bodice adorned with Swarovski crystals and pearls, and a plunging illusion V-neckline and back. The colour of the dress was champagne, which matched perfectly with the sparkle theme of the day.
