pronovias perfection. blush & gold for an elegant wedding at oulton hall – abbie & darren

February 3rd, 2017 | Laura McDonagh

Today we are welcoming Abbie and Darren back to the blog to share their big day with us, having previously shared their sweet engagement shoot on our pretty pages.

This wedding is a lesson in luxe styling – there’s a pair of Valentino Rockstuds softened by some perfect floral detailing, romantic calligraphy and plenty of gold and blush accents.

Quite frankly, Abbie and Darren’s big day at Leeds’ stunning venue Oulton Hall, gives us goosebumps.

Today’s mantra? Go gorgeous, or go home.

abbie says: We got engaged in Santorini in June 2014; it was just perfect. Darren presented me with a gorgeous princess cut diamond ring, which was exactly what I wanted. Our engagement shoot was featured on Brides Up North last year.

Our wedding date was Saturday 30th July 2016. We chose this date because we wanted a summer weekend wedding, plus it means we get to celebrate our anniversary in summer – who wouldn’t want that? I’d always wanted a string quartet at our wedding and had pictured them playing outside while our guests enjoyed the summer weather and drinks. Amazingly, it was a beautiful summer day and the dream became the reality!

We got married at Oulton Hall in Leeds. I’ve always loved this venue as it has the modern décor I adore while still having the charm of an older building. We also loved the courtyard which turned out to be perfect for the drinks reception.

The style of our wedding was elegant and romantic, with lots of floral patterning, blush and gold tones and lots of white. I love these colours and Darren let me run away with my ideas for the colour scheme!

I choose a Pronovias gown called Duende from Bridal Rogue Gallery in Harrogate. After trying on probably around 20 dresses, I just knew this was the one. I hadn’t wanted tulle to start off with – in fact, I had my heart set on a lace fishtail gown. However, after lots and lots of trying on, I still couldn’t find one to fit the bill. My dress was the perfect mix of tulle and lace and I customised it to make it perfectly ‘me’ – it originally had feathers! I also wore a pair of Valentino nude rockstud heels – man, I love those shoes! I also wore a pair of diamond earrings that were gifted to me by Darren the morning of the wedding.

Darren wore a dark navy suit from French Connection with a navy bow tie. He wore a pair of brown Ted Baker shoes to complement the suit. I know I’m biased, but he looked so handsome!

Our bridesmaids wore fitted fishtail blush dresses from Coast. I wanted my bridal party to feel gorgeous and they got lots and lots of compliments on the day.

The makeup artists for the bridal party was Frankie of Makeup by Frankie. I would recommend her wholeheartedly to any bride. My sister was so nervous about having her makeup done but Frankie put her completely at ease and my sister was delighted with the result. We also used a brilliant hairdresser, Bridget of Hair One located in Ossett. Again, I’d recommend Bridget to any bride-to-be.

Our groomsmen and both fathers wore navy suits from Slaters with navy ties – we wanted them to match but make sure that Darren stood out. It all ended up looking perfect.

festival wedding chic. watters for a fun celebration in manchester – sally & dan

June 1st, 2016 | Rachel Parry

Following on from our hugely successful WEDSTOCK’16 and WESTIVAL’16 events this season, we just love to see couples planning celebrations with relaxed yet enjoyable festival wedding vibes, incorporating bright colours, vibrant decor and cool live music.

Today’s wedding is therefore right up our street, as bride and groom Sally and Dan based their big day on their love of music festivals; picking a bold colour scheme (and a dash of Coronation Street fun!) to reflect their upbeat theme and the warm summer season.

Taking place at Manchester’s Great John Street hotel, this is the perfect example of how to make ‘festival’ stylish and chic…

sally says: Dan proposed to me at home after returning from a business trip to South Africa – it was a real shock. Even though we had been together for 12 years, getting married had never been top of our agenda. Dan knows I’m not one for lots of attention, so it was the perfect way to propose, just us two. After much deliberating Dan had decided to choose the engagement ring himself – it’s a beautiful classic Tiffany solitaire and fitted perfectly, much to his relief!

We set the date for 11th July 2015 in the hope that we may see some sun! As football fans, we also didn’t want a date that may clash with any important fixtures.

We decided on a church ceremony, followed by a reception at the Great John Street hotel in Manchester city centre. Prior to looking at wedding venues we hadn’t heard of the hotel but several people had mentioned it to us when looking, and what a hidden gem the hotel turned out to be! The hotel is an old Victorian school house which has been converted into a luxurious boutique hotel. The interior design of the hotel is stunning and boasts a south facing roof terrace, making it the perfect venue to host a party. We both love the city centre of Manchester and wanted this to be reflected in our day. This intimate venue enabled us to do this, with views looking out over the iconic Beetham Tower, and the old cobbles of the original Coronation Street set.

One of our shared passions is attending music festivals so we wanted this to be included in our day. We therefore incorporated a few things which resonated with this theme, such as the wedding stationery, flowers and camper vans.

Royal blue and yellow were the main colours for our colour scheme as we wanted vibrant summer colours which would go well with the festival style elements of the day that we had chosen.

antique elegance. alfred angelo for a relaxed & rustic wedding at the black swan – natalie & bob

May 17th, 2016 | Rachel Parry

This morning on the blog we’re taking a little trip to the pretty village of Helmsley in North Yorkshire, as we relive the wedding day of Natalie and Bob.

After a surprise proposal 12 years into their relationship, Natalie was in no mood to wait around and got straight to work planning the big day, starting with the venue. Having come across the stunning Black Swan hotel in Helmsley by chance, Natalie fell head over heels in love with its rustic charm and the other elements of the day soon fell into place for a relaxed and personal wedding, complete with shabby chic décor to complement the rural surroundings.

natalie says: Bob and I got engaged on the 12th September 2015 in the Lake District on a family holiday. It wasn’t the most romantic proposal but Bob doesn’t do romance. I put on his jacket because I was cold and pulled the box out of the pocket. I was in total shock because after 12 years it’s always been a standing joke that this day would never happen. He looked at me smiling and said “So are you going to then?” We still laugh at it now.

We got married on the 26th March 2016. We didn’t have a date in mind but this was a date that the venue and registrar were available. We knew we didn’t want a long engagement and if we didn’t just do quickly it would never happen. It also fell on the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, which was a plus.

We got married at the Black Swan in Helmsley, North Yorkshire, and it was just perfect. We looked at a few venues but as soon as I walked in by chance, I just knew this was the right venue for us. By chance Nicola Boden, the wedding coordinator, was free and talked me through what the venue could offer and all the packages. I booked the venue there and then without Bob and we later went together to have another look.

I never really had a theme or colour scheme in mind for the wedding, I was very open minded. The decisions were made after I fell in love with the antique purple bridesmaid dresses, which suited them perfectly. So from there it turned into a vintage shabby chic theme.

Can you give us a little overview of The Wedding of my Dreams?

gemma says: I’m the younger half of the mother and daughter team who founded The Wedding of my Dreams in 2010. My amazing mum, Karen Morgan, runs the award winning wedding florist Passion for Flowers, which I got more and more involved with after graduating from uni. I’d help on busy weekends picking up floristry skills as I went along, learning only from the best, and developed a real passion for floristry, styling weddings and to be honest everything wedding related! My job at the time was in digital marketing and social media, I knew a thing or two

At the time Passion for Flowers couples were hiring an array of props and decorations from us to complement their florals, saying they couldn’t find anything as lovely elsewhere in the market. Mum and I both love sourcing decorations and wanted couples all over the country to have access to the props and decorations we had searched so hard to find and so The Wedding of my Dreams was born.

Going into business with my mum was the best decision I’ve ever made, we both love going to work every day and both now work across the two companies. It’s so rewarding to see how far we’ve come and how both businesses have blossomed. All the hard work and late nights have really paid off. In 2015 Passion for Flowers was voted best wedding florist in England in The Wedding Industry Awards and The Wedding of my Dreams has won numerous awards since its launch.
