vintage class. a new year’s wedding at falcon manor – sadie & lee

April 6th, 2017 | Alexis Forsyth

Today’s couple, Sadie and Lee, know how to throw a good party. Celebrating their wedding on New Year’s Eve in the exquisite surroundings of a country house hotel in the Yorkshire Dales – the couple’s vintage themed nuptials are the epitome of modern day elegance combined with retro charm.

With splashes of vibrant florals, gorgeous lace and some rather dapper woolen suits – there’s lots of beautiful wedding inspo to indulge in. Sadie tells us more…

sadie says: We got engaged on 14th March 2015. We were at home about to head out for a meal, when Lee appeared with pink champagne. He proposed before we left the house, as he knew I wouldn’t want a scene in public.

We chose to get married on Saturday 31st December 2016. We knew we wanted a wintery Christmas wedding and New Year fell on a Saturday, so it just seemed like the perfect fit – we wanted a good party!

We decided on the setting of Falcon Manor as soon as we visited the venue. The building really stands out. When we went for a look around, it had just re-opened after a full refurbishment. It was so lovely; we didn’t look anywhere else.

We both wanted a vintage theme, with wool suits, lace and 50’s length dresses. This seemed to fit perfectly with the style and interior of the venue too.

A New Year Wedding at Falcon Manor (c) Richard Perry Photography (11)

We had a mixture of colours and textures that all fitted with our theme. The men wore darker colours and the girls wore vintage florals. When it came to table colours, we kept it simple with white and then lace for the sashes. We added splashes of colour using jars and flowers on the tables.

I struggled to find a dress I liked, partly due to being only 5ft tall with a petite frame. So I took a risk and ordered a dress from a website called Lily and Louie. It was made to my measurements – a 1950s inspired tea length dress with a petticoat. I added a lace slip over the top for the ceremony.

The groom and groomsmen’s suits were from the heritage range at Next. They were perfect because they came in a range of sizes, lengths and fit to accommodate the whole groom’s party. Lee chose navy wool fleck suit trousers and a waistcoat, and the jacket was in the same material but in a camel colour with a wool bow tie. His shoes were tan brown, purchased from Goodwin Smith. The groomsmen all wore the same suits but with a tie.

The bridesmaids wore Bardot style tops with mid-calf length skirts; a mixture of vintage florals in pale colours. We bought these on the high street from Miss Selfridge and Topshop.

I am a hairdresser so my business partner and I chose to do the bridesmaids’ hair and we booked a makeup artist called Annabel Bailey.

laid back love. maggie sottero for a relaxed wedding at high house farm brewery – chloe & tom

February 8th, 2017 | Laura McDonagh

A Relaxed Wedding at High House Farm Brewery (c) Erin Photography (26)

I have a confession to make, readers: today’s real wedding has brought on a girl crush. Bride Chloe mixed Maggie Sottero with Topshop and threw in a leather jacket for good measure. She’s like Kate Moss, but Northern (i.e. an even better version of Kate Moss).

Also, we need more thumbs-up photographs in wedding albums. And brides swigging from beer bottles. And haystacks. Just putting it out there.

Actually, forget the girl crush – I have a full-on wedding crush. Do you think Chloe and Tom would notice if I conned them into being friends with me and invented a time machine so I could actually be at this wedding?

I challenge you to look at these stunning photographs and not feel the same way.

chloe says: We got engaged on 4th September 2014, at Dunstanburgh Castle, Northumberland. It was the day after my birthday and Tom suggested that we take a day trip to Craster and Dunstanburgh. He completely surprised me by proposing while we were standing on the cliffs behind the castle; the only people around were a couple of fishermen! He’d managed to sneak a picnic into the car and after he’d proposed we enjoyed some food and drinks while sitting on the harbour in Craster.

A Relaxed Wedding at High House Farm Brewery (c) Erin Photography (35)

We were married on 28th July 2016. We wanted a summer wedding to make the most of our venue (though the weather didn’t quite turn out as planned on the day!) Originally, we’d planned an August wedding to fit in with school holidays as I’m a teacher. We needed to move it forward slightly in the end to also fit in with Tom’s work schedule. This meant we had a week or so afterwards to enjoy a short honeymoon, too.

Our venue was High House Farm Brewery, Matfen, Northumberland. We wanted a laid-back venue where people could completely relax and enjoy the day – the open barn and the surrounding countryside was the perfect fit. We also wanted somewhere that we could add a personal touch with decorations etc. – our venue was great for this. They were very flexible with food and did their best to cater for every request. There was no hire charge for the venue providing that we used their caterers, so it saved us a bit of money that we were able to spend elsewhere.

We didn’t have a wedding theme and were very laid-back with decoration, table dressing and what we/our guests wore on the day. We wanted a laid-back atmosphere, and our guests commented that they really liked this about the day.

I chose a Maggie Sottero gown called Patience from Y.A.P. Bridal Boutique in Newcastle. The dress wasn’t too over-the-top, but was still really special. I also wore a full-length plain tulle veil from Y.A.P, which blended in with the train of my dress. I wore gold peep-toe sandals from Topshop during the ceremony, and changed into some cream lacy Toms for dancing later on. My leather jacket kept me warm when the temperature dropped!

My earrings were worn by my mam when she was married, and were my something ‘old’, ‘borrowed’ and ‘blue’. My something ‘new’ was a wedding present from Tom; a beautiful gold locket

tinsel time. julia’s christmas picks

December 18th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Julia's Christmas Picks

There’s absolutely no doubt about it that the big day is drawing near – cue an afternoon spent dashing round the shops like a headless chicken, toddler in tow, as I realised that today was my only possible shopping day till the big man comes down the chimney.

(Sorry about the late feature, and all that, but at least there’ll be presents under the tree!)

My Christmas shopping’s done (albeit hastily), but here’s what would be on my wish list for the 25th, if anyone out there’s paying any attention by this stage…

Or have I lost you all to a reality TV and mulled wine blur?

ruby & ed ballerina slippers, £39

Soft, snuggly and stylish, these ballerina slippers come in the prettiest berry shades, perfect for cosy Christmas evenings in.  Plus they do a tiny pair, just right for my little mini me!

charlotte tilbury Supermodel Body, £45

Her make up line is sensational, so I’m hoping that her Supermodel Body cream will do what it says on the tin.  After skipping the gym in favour of more screen time, let’s hope that Charlotte’s promise of a “slimmer shimmer” comes to fruition.

jimmy choo Rebel cross body bag, £795

I’m dreaming of a Jimmy Christmas, and this little number works for day or night. I’d chose the silver for maximum sparkle.

nails inc nail polish in Porchester Square, £14

My staple colour, and in need of a restock.  This pale grey is endlessly flattering and goes with almost any outfit (including a wedding gown). I pray this stuff is never discontinued.

topshop sequin christmas tree sweater, £46

If you’re going to join the Christmas jumper madness, then why not do it in style?  If you’re gong to join ’em, you may as well beat ’em. In sequins.

alex monroe teeny tiny diamond ring, £265

Fragile, different and contains diamonds. I’d love my digits to be adorned with this little number.

kurt geiger london Bond heels in pink, £270

Strong, sexy and in my very favourite colour.  I’d never take them off.

ted bakersequinned pencil skirt, £139

Perfect for a glitzy night on the tiles with the girls, or dressed down for a dinner date with the other half. This skirt has drama and sass, but it’s got plenty of class too.

clarisonic Aria in gold, £155

I dream of the perfect complexion, and apparently this little gadget is going to deliver.  A must for ladies getting aisle ready and apparently for the rest of us too. Sign me up.

labrador puppy, POA

Do I even need to explain?

Real Wedding Recap 2012: Glittering Romance: A Real Wedding In Yorkshire – Amy & Chris

December 25th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Over the festive period I’ll be recapping some of my very favourite Real Weddings from the last 12 months on the wedding blog. It’s been a tough choice! In true Brides Up North style, each wedding featured on these pages is unique, beautiful and gorgeously personal. It’s been an exceptionally fabulous year! Enjoy…

A glittering beauty to welcome Christmas in.

.

We first met gorgeous bride Amy and her husband Chris back in November last year on these pages, when I featured their intimate pre-wedding “Limited Collection” shoot by Cat Hepple Photography.  Now they are back to share their even more beautiful Real Wedding images – again by the lovely Cat Hepple – with us.  What a pleasure!  Amy and Chris’ wedding day is a triple whammy of stylish, chic and romantic, which all adds up to an utterly stunning celebration.

Amy says:  Chris asked me to marry him at home on Christmas Morning 2010 and we tied the knot on 17th August 2012 at St John’s Church Oulton then Oulton Hall, Leeds.

Oulton Hall is just around the corner from our house, Chris plays golf there most weekends every weekend and because it’s so close it meant it was accessible for all our friends and family, which was important to us that they could all get there hassle free, although my Momma T might disagree, they flew in from Arkansas!

.

I drive past the church and Oulton Hall every day on my way to and from work and I have to admit, it is beautiful, it was a great venue. The event staff on the day were fantastic, despite a couple of power cuts and it scrubbed up nicely with the help of some amazing suppliers! I will hold Oulton Hall fondly in my heart, full of happy memories.

I read blogs religiously and scrapbooked and tumblr’d for months.  I knew what I wanted but I wouldn’t call it a theme!  We opted for a colour scheme of greens and whites.

Jo Bilham did my makeup and Kizzy at Charisma Bridal did my hair.

I tried on a dozen dresses (around 50 to be more specific), in a dozen different stores spread across Yorkshire. I never really fell in love with any of them. So I started researching Yorkshire designers, I found James Steward Couture and the rest is a fairy-tale.

.

From the first meeting with James I felt like he got me, he knew exactly the look I wanted to achieve and had no problems executing it, he is beyond words talented. We started the dress fittings and I felt like Cinderella, minus the bluebirds and the singing mice!  It was so exciting, starting with calico and pins to the final fittings when I was stepping into the finished silk dress we had been creating for nine months, it was perfect, it still makes me want to cry, it was and still is (excluding the mucky hem and fake bake smudges) the most beautiful dress I have ever worn. I could genuinely swoon about my dress and about James all day long.

.

My shoes were Jimmy Choo, the last pair in the country in my size, it was obviously fate!

.

HF Couture created my stunning couture hairpiece.

My grown up bridesmaids also wore James Steward Couture whilst the younger and flower girls were in Topshop and Tigerlily.  Chris and his groomsmen wore Slaters suits & James Steward Couture cravats.

Helen at Twigs in Barwick has been a friend of my Mum’s for years and I always knew it would be Helen that did my wedding flowers, long before I knew who my husband was!  I wanted a collection of all my favourite flowers, most importantly orchids, hydrangeas, freesias, avalanche roses and lots of greenery. I wasn’t specific apart from to stick to whites and greens and let Helen do her thing, they turned out beautifully, I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

We had Trio Vivo by The Event Music Company booked for the church ceremony right through the wedding breakfast with the addition of a surprise as we left the church.  Chris and I watch Love Actually every Christmas, it’s a little tradition we have, so I knew I had to recreate the wedding scene.

.

Chris Hilton at Event Music pulled it off seamlessly, planting a singer and two extra musicians amongst our guests, so as we were leaving the church they started playing ‘All You Need Is Love’, trumpet, singer and all, it was fabulous, I just wish we could have done a second walk out the church so I could have listened to them longer!

Thierry and Rebecca at Dumouchel are great friends of ours and gifted us our stunning cakes as a wedding present – I’m a very lucky girl.

.

We had a macaroon tower, with custom blended green; lavender, rose and white chocolate macaroons;

a stunning croquembouche with a mixture of chocolate ganache and crème patisserie filling and a traditional iced and tiered fruit cake.  They were so delicious and looked amazing.

.

They were all themed together with the addition of the hydrangea petals and the most beautiful edible paper butterflies that came from SugarRobot in California via Etsy.

We had a custom monogram designed and used it on the invites, which were made by Cutture, fabulous laser etched mirrors, on the order of service and the table plan.

Our table plan and the numbers were created by Chris and an amazing local glass supplier, it was his baby, he’s very proud of it!

The monogrammed butterflies were also a favourite of mine.

In the evening we used a band called The Wedding Smashers.  Max smashed it, everyone danced till they dropped, my Choos were discarded and I lost all bridal elegance winding to Bobby Brown and I can vividly remember bouncing about the dance floor to Katy Perry’s Firework with all my girls, I was deliriously happy. Our last dance was All You Need Is Love, it was the way we started our party and the way we finished it. Happy smiley people!

My top tips for other Brides Up North would be to do whatever you want to do, don’t be led by other people’s opinions or what’s ‘on trend’. Don’t get stressed by family politics, if they love you enough they’ll let it drop for just one day!  Enjoy every second of the day! Spend the biggest chunk of your budget on a really amazing photographer: it’s worth every penny.
