Snap Happy. Extra Shots For An Extra Special Wedding Album?

July 14th, 2014 | Rachel Parry

S6 Photography

Wedding photographs have come a long way over the years. When my grandparents got hitched in 1960 they had just a handful of black and white photographs taken by my Granddad’s uncle. Fast forwards several years to when by parents tied the knot in 1982 and things had moved on a fair bit.

They hired a professional photographer to take their wedding snaps and there were plenty of lovely coloured images to create an album. That said wedding pics at that time tended to be more structured so there was the standard bride getting out of the car, groomsmen outside the church, confetti shots and traditional family and friend line-ups.

S6 Photography

Today however, almost anything goes in wedding photography. You can have a mixture of both black and white and coloured images, you can hire a photographer from the morning preparation right through to your guests passing out on the dance floor – you can even hire a team of photographers if you so wish.

Better still, there is the option of an engagement shoot, so you can learn to relax in front of the camera ahead of your big day to avoid an album full of coat-hanger style smiles. The bride can also have another bite at the cherry if she likes in the form of a trash the dress shoot, giving her another excuse to don her dream dress in front of the camera.

It is the big day itself though when the most important images are taken. For this reason some brides and grooms are requesting additional shots to ensure they have lots of lovely memories of their wedding day and some snaps that go beyond the traditional album.

S6 Photography

S6 Photography

One idea to secure super special images is to travel to, or stop off at, a place that is dear to the couple for some extra shots, just as long as the chosen location is not too far away from the venue. So, for example, a couple whose real wedding I featured on Brides Up North recently, stopped off at Ladybower in the Peak District for some stunning shots with breath-taking backdrops as the picturesque destination was on the way to their reception venue from the church. Another couple (whose lovely images are shared in this feature – hello James and Kate *waves*) stole the opportunity to sneak off with their photographer for some sensational shots at Padley Gorge in Derbyshire, which was close by to their rural wedding venue.

S6 Photography

While some couples do like the idea creating a bumper album of wedding day memories, they worry that taking time out on their big day to get the extra shots will take them away from their guests for too long and will mean they miss out on some of the action. But there is an alternative – be it a slightly controversial one – have more images taken at a later date.

Yes, that means both the bride and groom can put on their wedding attire once again and pretty much have free reign on the location for the shots as they don’t have to be rushing back to guests. While some couples will find this an odd suggestion, others love the idea of another moment in front of the lens.

PH Weddings

Images in this set by PH Weddings

But when to do it? A couple whose wedding photos are featured in this post braved to go where few others couples would and had their extra shots taken the day after the wedding. If you just groaned at the thought, you’re not alone. I imagine I will be looking far from my best the day after getting hitched, no doubt emerging from the honeymoon suite with remnants of makeup around my dark, sunken eyes and my hair in somewhat of a disorganised crow’s nest style while my dress will be in desperate need of a deep dry-cleaning session. But for careful couples, having extra shots taken the next day can be a nice way to extend that just-wed feeling and escape for a few precious hours as a new Mr and Mrs.

PH Weddings

PH Weddings

PH Weddings

If that all seems like a bit too much hard work, there is the option to leave it a few days, weeks or even months, in a sort of “rock the dress” fashion (just as long as you can both still fit into your wedding day get up that is).

And it’s not always the bride and groom requesting extra images as creative photographers are helping couples to push the boundaries. A northern couple, whose stunning extra wedding images feature here, had an evening ceremony in mainland Ibiza so their clever photographer suggested getting some fabulous coastal shots the following day. The very same photographer is also shooting an urban wedding later this year and has organised a second shoot with the bride and groom the next day to get some contrasting yet completing rural shots to create the perfect package.

This Must Be Underwater Love: A Styled Trash The Dress Session In The North West

November 23rd, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Unforgettable Memories

.

.

Fancy something a little bit different with your Friday morning bacon butty?  I don’t mean HP instead of Heinz either. Even better, if you can believe it (depending on whether you are operating on a Thursday night “it’s nearly Christmas” hangover, I suppose).

.

This morning we are in the North West conducting a little underwater art experiment with friend of the wedding blog, Craig of Unforgettable Memories.  During this trash the dress styled film shoot, Craig and his small team explore movement and grace.  Maybe not something you do every weekend, granted, but certainly captivating, definitely different and utterly beautiful.  Soak it up and be inspired.

.

Press play.

.

.

.

.

Craig says:  Now, I know that this isn’t your typical bridal shoot and that many of you would be horrified to think of your stunning wedding dress being thrown in a pool. However, you can’t say it isn’t different, and you certainly can’t say it isn’t beautiful.

.

As trained diver I have always loved being underwater and have created some wonderful footage of the tranquillity of underwater life and when I started producing wedding films I saw similarities between the detailed beauty of bridal gowns and the detailed beauty of the underwater environment so it seemed like a good idea to bring the two together. However it wasn’t until I was having a conversation with Doris Designs who provide bridal petticoats that this actually came to fruition.

.

.

Unforgettable Memories

.

.

During our conversation about a number of different shoots Doris happened to mention that she would love to see how her wonderful skirts would react in water, and I certainly wasn’t going to waste the opportunity to show her. As we discussed the options I was getting more and more excited about how I could make this happen and immediately began to set the wheels in motion.

.

.

Unforgettable Memories

.

.

I contacted a local dive club who happened to use a local pool for their practise sessions. They were extremely helpful and allowed me to go down and take a look at what they could offer and we agreed that the shoot could take place during one of the regular evenings. So pool sorted I now needed dresses and a model. I already had a couple of wedding dresses which I had previously used for creative shoots so that wasn’t a problem; however finding a model who was willing and able to wear one, in a pool, with her eyes open and still look gracious was to be the biggest challenge.

.

.

Unforgettable Memories

.

.

Luckily for me, I do get involved in a wide range of video projects which take me all around the country and during a shoot for a music video I happened to meet a lovely girl who was a burlesque dancer so I picked up the phone and called her. As this was something she hadn’t done before she was extremely excited to get involved and a date was set.  When the time came I met Talulah and we headed off to the pool. She did her own makeup and got into the water. This is the end result.

In The News: Recent UK Press For This Lil’ Ol’ Wedding Blog

March 11th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

As regular readers of the wedding blog will know, I regularly work with wedding magazines as a freelance contributor.  My background (before a six year career wrong turn as a solicitor!) is in magazines and despite running a successful online blog, I still get a thrill from seeing my work in print.

.

I have a big feature coming out soon in Bridal Buyer Europe (Brides Up North in Dutch and French no less!) but here is what I’ve been getting up to on these shores…

.

My regular Rock The Dress With Brides Up North feature was published in Hitched Magazine at the start of the month.  I’m an associated contributor to Hitched with a recurring column, so if you fancy rocking your dress in my next feature, contact me

North East newspaper The Journal featured my top picks for Spring in their recent wedding supplement.

.

The Journal

.

.

… and Brides Up North was nominated as Best Wedding Directory by The Bridal Magazine readers.  What a lovely surprise!  Voting is now closed, so we will await the results at their Fabulous Affair in mid April.  Thank you to everyone who voted for this wedding blog.

.

I’ve actually got a few writing projects to finish off today, so it’s back to work for me today.  I hope you are having a more relaxed Sunday, but to be honest, sitting at my desk doing what I love with the sun streaming through the blinds and a warm crumpet with my name on it ain’t so bad!

.

See you later today!

Catch Of The Day – Danielle Rocks Her Dress!

October 17th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

So, as you read this the hubby and I will be loading our suitcases into the boot of the car and driving to the Lake District for a romantic mini break to celebrate our first wedding anniversary.  It’s days like this that make me feel so grateful.

.

Whilst we put some colour in our cheeks with a bit of adventuring, gastro pub food, bubbles and romance, I’ve left you with a double daily dose of all that is gorgeous.  Starting right now with this stunning Rock The Dress shoot submitted by GASP Photography

.

Newlyweds – have you rocked the dress?  Contact me to share your images and you could end up on the pages of Hitched Magazine as well as featuring on the wedding blog.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: GASP Photography

.

.

Jade from GASP Photography tells us about the shoot:  Danielle got married at St.Andrew’s Church in Darlington.  She wanted another opportunity to wear her dress and to get some relaxed, arty shots as there was so much to take in on her wedding day.  Danielle’s Rock The Dress shoot took place on Redcar beach and we went for natural style shots showing off the pinky toned colour palette.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: GASP Photography

.

.

Danielle enjoyed the shoot as she said she felt she could express herself and feel like a princess again in her dress.  Afterwards, she told us that she was pleased she had done it.  She loved all of her shots as they are completely different to the ones we captured on her wedding day and are more like a piece of art as opposed to a traditional style wedding photographs.

.

.

.

.

Apart from a few unwanted showers, which just added to the mood of the photographs, we had an awesome day!

Pony Club! Sophie Rocks Her Dress

October 7th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Catharine Noble Photography

.

.

Hey, hey!  It’s almost the weekend!  Dip a Crunchie into your morning cuppa whilst perusing the wedding blog and enjoy this atmospheric Rock the Dress shoot submitted by Catharine Noble Photography.  You can almost feel the sunshine coming off the screen.

.

Remember ladies – a rock the dress shoot is your chance to put yourself out there and incorporate parts of your personality that perhaps didn’t get a chance to show through on your big day.  Here, Sophie seizes the opportunity to celebrate her love of the outdoors and show off her brand new pixie cut!  There’ll be only one type of pony tail in this lady’s life for quite a while!

.

I can identify with her motives completely.  After months, nay, years of growing the ‘do for the wedding – there’s nothing better than a great new haircut to make you feel like yourself again.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Catharine Noble Photography   Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Catharine Noble Photography

.

.

Catharine explains the thinking behind the shoot:  Sophie had a total restyle since her wedding with a beautiful cropped hairstyle and was excited to rock her dress with her new look!

Sophie has always has a passion for horses and also horse riding, as a little girl and right through to adulthood. Unfortunately problems with her back during pregnancy meant that she could not ride for quite some time but now she is just getting back into her hobby and she wanted to include it into the shoot. So we based part of the shoot  around Sophie’s love of horses and horse riding and includes Billy the horse, her cousin’s pride and joy!

Splash! Mermaid Bride: A Trash The Dress Shoot

September 10th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

Talk about visual impact!  Now I am not suggesting that this is what you get up to on your wedding day ladies, but for a trash the dress shoot… what a stunner!  Revel in it.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Jess Petrie Photography

.

.

Friend of the wedding blog Jess Petrie Photography put this vibrant and haunting set of images together.  I asked her about the inspiration behind the day.

.

Jess says:  I have had a styled bridal shoot in mind where I would take the most stunning dress and the bride wearing it off to the sea and completely trash it.  I am a big fan of wedding magazines and blogs. I like to look for inspiration through different things. We don’t very often see our brides getting married by the sea, and if they do it’s abroad. But why? Ok we don’t have the best weather but we do have some stunning beaches, and they are free!

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Jess Petrie Photography

.

.

I chose Filey Bay, North Yorkshire, because it’s somewhere I used to visit often with my grandparents as a child and I have a lot of good memories here. The sand is very soft and golden and the beach stretches right out, as far as you can see. There are a lot of stunning views with the cliffs at either end, and of course the North Sea.

Wild Tides! A Wet & Windy Trash The Dress Shoot – Jane & John

August 6th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

Brides and photographers – I am currently looking for NORTH EAST Trash/ Rock/ Cherish The Dress Photoshoots to feature in my Hitched Magazine column.  Please get in touch ASAP if you would like to share your memories.  Your shoot will also be featured here on the wedding blog!

.

.

For now though, lets head over to the North West for an awesome Trash The Dress session sent in by friend of the wedding blog, Jonathan from JAY Photographic Images.  This session has so much spirit.  The wetter this red dress gets, the fierier it becomes!  To. Die. For.

.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Jay Photographic Images

.

.

Jonathan explains: Jane had wanted to be married in a red wedding dress, but with her Catholic Church service it just didn’t seem quite appropriate.  So with her original dress sold, she sourced the dress she really wanted and prepared for our shoot.

That Sunday the weather decided to take a turn for the worse.  Fine for the gardeners out there, who I’m sure were glad of a bit of rain, but when you’ve had a beach bridal shoot planned for months it really doesn’t help!

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Jay Photographic Images

.

.

The lovely Jane and her husband, John, were still game for coming along, despite the weather. But none of us were prepared for how horrible the conditions were when we arrived at Talacre Beach. The driving rain and strong winds really weren’t what we wanted for such a shoot. So we decided to head off for a coffee and deliberate about what Plan B would become.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Jay Photographic Images

.

.

Our chosen location for coffee was the Nant Hall, in Prestatyn. Not only where they happy to take in some already damp guests, but they were equally open to us starting our photo shoot there too. It did cause some confusion to the early Sunday lunchtime restaurant visitors, who were happy to come over and congratulate the ‘married couple’.

I was so pleased that despite what the weather was chucking at us all, we didn’t decide to throw in the towel and just went for it with the bridal shoot over at the beach. Jane had gone to so much effort to purchase her wonderful red wedding dress and floral bouquet it would have been such a shame if we didn’t capture some shots in the great outdoors.

.

.

Brides Up North Wedding Blog: Jay Photographic Images

Despite hiding out at the Nant Hall for a coffee break, interior shoot and even catching lunch, the wind and rain hadn’t really eased off at all. With wellies, waterproofs and even gloves in hand (was this really June?) we dashed around the beach getting all the shots we could.

Jane and John were fantastic and despite getting soaked within seconds of coming out from under their golf brolly, they really helped us produce some brilliant images. A red wedding dress isn’t often an option for most brides, given the sort of wedding they might have arranged, so in Jane’s case she revelled in the opportunity to go for something quite different to the actual dress she got married in.

Unless you really look quite hard I don’t think you could even spot how much rain was coming down on us that afternoon, but the dress will clean up perfectly and for the images that we’ve produced for them both, it was so worth it.
