lookbook: ’bout that base

Shopping for a wedding dress should be an exciting experience for a bride-to-be, no matter what her style, age or size.

That said I’ve heard upsetting stories from a number of fuller-figured brides when searching for the dress, which have hindered their enjoyment. From tales of being asked to squeeze into small sample dresses and to ‘imagine’ how it might fit, to being told collections don’t go up to their size, or simply feeling that there is nothing out there for them.

I’ll bet Kim Kardashian had no such problems at Givenchy.

Well, even if you’re not quite ready to ‘break the internet‘ with your own booty, I’m pleased to report there are some truly stunning plus-size wedding dress collections out there, with certain gowns going up to a size 32. And better yet, more designers are beginning to branch out into plus-size creations by extending their size range.

Jenny Packham - Josephine

The queen of bridal prettiness Jenny Packham, included flattering gowns for plus-sized brides in her Spring 2015 collection which were showcased by gorgeous fuller-figured models on the catwalk. Her Josephine dress in steely grey features incredibly elegant lace sleeves, a pretty sash and signature intricate detailing, drawing the eye to all the right places. Likewise Packham’s Isabella dress covers up the tops of the arms with a delicate and stylish cape, while sparkling crystal detailing frames the under-bust area of the dress perfectly.

Veromia is another designer that offers stunning plus-size dresses with support and structure so that brides feel both confident and comfortable during their moment in the limelight. Veromia’s Sonsie collection offers designs to suit a wide range of tastes, from the fluid SON91452 with fluttery capped sleeves, to the 1950s tea-length SON91462 and the fuller SON91465 with illusion neckline detail.  Meanwhile for autumn and winter brides who crave more dramatic dress designs, Veromia’s SON91208 in ravishing gold, and S91051 in deep regal red, are bound to tick boxes.

Jenny Packham SP2015

Bonny Bridal’s Unforgettable collection has further stunning offerings in plus sizes. Standout designs include 1207 and 1304, which boast fairytale style ruffle detailing, as well as 1424 and 1206, which feature feminine lace sleeves.

Style and structure can also be found within Cara Mai’s wonderful collection. Again brides-to-be are given a choice of both fitted and fuller gowns. The simple, strapless 29228 is a firm favourite within the collection, but for those brides in search of a little more support, the 29244 with tulle overlay and pretty lace appliqués frames curvaceous ladies’ figures beautifully.

Style A Rainbow: Could You Rock A Colourful Frock?

July 15th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

3

Claire Pettibone – Venus

.

As well as the usual – and still beautiful – ivories and whites adorning the bridal catwalks for the past few seasons, they have also been awash with watercolour hues as wedding gown designers step away from monochrome and explore the further reaches of the rainbow.  Our regular guest blogger, Rachel Parry of Mosaic Brides has fallen head over heels for colour.

.

Rachel says:  As part of my job (and in my spare time) I spend a lot of hours swooning over beautiful wedding dresses which often results in a daydream of my very own white wedding. However recently I’ve found myself dreaming in colour as many wedding dress designers have dared to dip their gowns in beautiful blush tones and even vibrant hues, posing a controversial question to brides – would you marry in a colour?

.

While many brides do stray from pure white to the heady heights of ivory, very few dare to go that step further. But with an influx of coloured gowns on the bridal catwalks for several seasons now the trend is gradually growing in popularity and has picked up several celebrity endorsements along the way. Last year the gorgeous Jessica Biel married Mr JT in a pretty pink gown and actresses Anne Hathaway and Reece Witherspoon have also walked the aisle wearing the girly hue.

.

While I wouldn’t dare to go as far as fashionista Sarah Jessica Parker who married in black, I would consider the option of a pastel wedding dress. I think soft hues such as taupe, peach, powder pink and baby blue give gowns a romantic and whimsical appearance, perfect for a fairytale wedding.

.

.

1

Claire Pettibone – Dew Drop

.

Some of my favourite designs come from Claire Pettibone who often injects bursts of colour into her delicate and detailed creations.  For those not wanting to stray too far from tradition, Pettibone has many flattering and fashionable designs in subtle gold and blush tones with elegant embroidery detailing.

Personally I was a big fan of her pale pink ‘Dew Drop’ dress, complete with eye-catching rose bolero.

Several designs in her recent collection ‘An Earthy Paradise’ feature on-trend pops of mint green and the full coloured ‘Venus’ dress.

.

.

2

Ian Stuart

.

The expert in theatrical bridal wear, Ian Stuart is also an advocate of coloured wedding dresses.

His ‘Killer Queen’ collection featured many dramatic designs in muted palettes such as taupe, honey, rose and lilac as well as bolder options including the ‘Verbier’ dress in blue and ‘Broadway’ in bright peony pink. Coloured dresses also feature in his latest collection ‘Supernova’ but the confident designer has gone one step by with the addition of a floral print dress, ‘South Pacific’ which is both bold and beautiful. Australian designer Wendy Makin has also included a statement floral print dress (‘Katelyn’) in her couture collection which is attracting a lot of attention..

.

.

4

Ian Stuart

.

Of course these aren’t the only designers experimenting with colour. Maggie Sottero, Charlotte Balbier, Veromia and Elie Saab but to name a few have also come up with colourful creations.

.

.

5

Ian Stuart

.

Perhaps the queen of coloured wedding dresses though is Vera Wang who never fears to push the design boundaries. Previous collections have included the cute yellow Isabella dress and the dramatic grey and black Josephine gown. She also turned up the heat with an all red collection for Spring 2013 and her latest Spring 2014 saw the catwalk awash with striking monochrome creations for fashion-forward brides.

Just Dreamy! Supplier Showcase: Dreamcatcher Bridal

May 1st, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

Dreamcatcher Bridal

.

.

Today I am proud to introduce you to Dreamcatcher Bridal, one of our fabulous Featured Suppliers and definitely worth a visit for all our North West readers on the hunt for their dream dress.  These ladies know their gowns, and goodness, what gowns they stock!  Let’s meet them…

.

Dreamcatcher opened its doors in July 2000, a family business run by mother and daughter team, Gill and Georgina. Having had some bad experiences ourselves during bridal gown shopping and realising that it would be necessary to travel long distances to find designer dresses, we set upon our venture to bring couture designer collections to the Preston area. Gill with a passion for beautiful fabrics and a background in the technical side of dress design and construction and Georgina with the business brains, artist flair and youthful enthusiasm, we knew we’d make the perfect partnership.

.

We have bridal gowns to suit all budgets with bargain sample sale gowns under £500 to new gowns from £650 to £3500.

.

.

Dreamcatcher Bridal

.

.

Following months of research and planning, the designers at the top of our wish list were Sassi Holford and Suzanne Neville. Both designers of exquisite, classic gowns with amazing cut, structure and style, yet each bringing an individual twist. Sassi the pure genius with lace and Suzanne with the ability to create smooth sculptured bodices that somehow make all brides instantly drop a dress size.

.

At our very first Harrogate Bridal Buyer Exhibition, some 13 years ago, we were fortunate enough to be introduced to Benjamin Roberts and knew instantly that the label was just what we were looking for. With beautiful embroidery and stunning beadwork at amazing prices but still with the quality and structure we weren’t prepared to compromise on.

.

Over the years we have added new designers to our range including Enzoani and Essense of Australia. Enzoani offers a modern European style using soft satins, chic layers, signature high quality and rich detail using the finest Swarovski crystals. Essense gowns feature luxurious fabrics and just the right amount of head-turning sparkle. With the added option of a lace up or zip/button up back this diverse collection is a popular choice with both our staff and brides to be.

.

We are also extremely proud to stock beautiful designs from Anoushka G, perfect for destination weddings, Veromia, for the traditional fairytale wedding and Sonsie by Veromia, a stunning range specially created for the curvier figure. The newest addition to our extensive collection is Anny Lin, offering a definite WOW for the more daring bride. The usual fabrics and delicate, yet stunning beadwork make Anny’s designs stand out amongst the crowd.

.

Our range is so diverse with so so many amazing designs. If absolutely pressed our favourite at the moment is Faye by Sassi Holford. It’s a simple waisted style in rose damask with a plain duchesse satin sash with buttons and large bow detail down the back. The fabric is so unusual, simply subtle and stunning!  Currently lace gowns are particularly popular, with brides looking for a more covered demure look.

.

.

Dreamcatcher Bridal

.

.

Loving all things that sparkle, we have a fantastic range of accessories, hand selected to complement each bridal gown. With designs from Halo & Co, Polly Edwards, Ellie K, Richard Designs and Bijoux Bec, all offering coordinating headpieces and jewellery handcrafted using Swarovski stones. A large selection of veils from Joyce Jackson and The Couture Veil, designed by Sassi Holford using gorgeous soft vintage tulles with a wide variety of lace edges which perfectly match Sassi’s superb bridal designs. There really is something for everyone!

.

.

Dreamcatcher Bridal

.

.

We have an excellent selection of bridesmaid’s gowns with collections from JLM Europe, Watters & Watters and Veromia. With traditional bridesmaid’s styles to cutting edge designs all available in a variety of fabrics and colour options. We also have a beautiful collection of silk flower girl styles from Nicki Macfarlane.

.

Not wanting to leave out the Men, we offer an extensive range of high quality hire wear from Peter Posh and Highland wear from Cameron Ross, catering for both traditional and contemporary weddings. When everything’s available under one roof it’s much easier to co-ordinate styles and colours to ensure the perfect match.

.

.

Dreamcatcher Bridal

.

.

It’s official! We stock some of the best in the business. The recent Bridal Buyer Awards proved to be very successful for some of our designers, not just Bridal designers, but Bridesmaids and accessories too. Massive congratulations to Sassi Holford, for winning British Bridal Designer of the Year 2013, Benjamin Roberts for winning Best Bridal Manufacturer 2013, Sonsie by Veromia for winning Best Plus Size Collection 2013, JLM for winning Best Bridesmaids Collection 2013 and Ellie K for scooping the award for Best Headdress Designer 2013. This we think proves we have fantastic taste and stock the best in the business!

Classic English: A Real Wedding In The North West – Charlotte & Tez

December 13th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

Craig George Photography

.

.

Well, what can I say?  They came, they sparkled, they partied!

.

I’ve only really just recovered from the Brides Up North Christmas Party this Tuesday night at the magnificent Thorp Perrow, North Yorkshire.  It’s a newly opened private family pile, perfect for an elegant and opulent wedding celebration, and on Tuesday over 150 of the region’s finest wedding industry suppliers and  Brides Up North readers came to enjoy an evening filled with bubbly, live music, fun, laughter and Christmas spirits!

.

To enquire about weddings at Thorp Perrow you can contact CWC Malings, who were our outstanding hosts for the evening, keeping us all well fed and well oiled, but we’ll be throwing open her doors once again for a very special Brides Up North luxury wedding exhibition on Sunday 12th May 2013, so make sure the date is in your diary.  If you think this place is spectacular in December, just wait to see it in the May sunshine! (Exhibitor enquiries to julia@bridesupnorth.co.uk please!)

.

I also have a few other thank you’s to do (and party pictures, both from our official event photographer Ruth Mitchell Photography and the fabulous Limelight Photobooth girls, will follow soon).  Huge love to the amazing Glen Roughead, who absolutely takes the crown as the North’s new King of Swing and the super cool Vintage78 Dj who kept us entertained all night following our wonderful pianist and her beautiful Christmas carols. To our media team of absolute superstars, Ruth Mitchell Photography, Forever Film and Limelight Photobooth Hire, as always a big thank you.  Last but not least a big shout to the amazing Joanna and her team at Twisted Willow Floristry who gave up their time and worked with me to create beautiful floral displays totally in keeping with the mood of the venue and evening but beyond the reaches of my own imagination.

.

Now, as much as I’d like to hibernate until Boxing Day, the show must go on here on these swirly silver pages, and what better way to resume our usual schedule than with a simple and classic Real Wedding in Chester from beautiful Brides Up North reader Charlotte?  With images by Craig George.

.

.

.

.

Charlotte says:  We got engaged on Christmas Day 2009 at our home town of Plymouth and were married on 22nd September 2012 at St Andrews Church, Tarvin and the reception at Willington Hall, Willington, Chester.  The church and Willington are local to my husband’s family who live in Tarvin. The Church holds some special memories and it is also the resting place of my husband’s Dad.

We chose to have a classic English wedding with some vintage details and chose a simple colour scheme of ivory and black with some burgundy details.

My dress was a classic strapless fish tail gown from the Veromia Bridal Collection.  It was very simple but gave a fantastic shape.  I carried a hand tied bouquet of white lilies with bleached peacock feathers I had purchased on Etsy to make the bouquet look extra special.

.

My bridesmaids wore black and ivory A line strapless dresses found online from JJ House and carried bouquets of ivory roses with black ribbon.

The whole day was wonderful but just after the ceremony we had further photos taken just the two of us at the Church which was a really nice time to relax and enjoy one another before we hit our reception.

The table dressing was laid out by my reception but I organised and purchased all the materials myself. I had found some beautiful ivory rose hangers for the doors into the reception hall and rose petals around floating candles for the tables. Each guest received two hand-made flapjacks made by a close friend. We used Rebecca at Elegance Venue Dressing for our chair covers and ties.

I love chocolate and so we ordered a chocolate fountain rather than a cake. This went down with everyone and was an extra element to the wedding reception.  In the evening we used a local DJ who was brilliant and played our play list which was great.

We have a two year old son who was being looked after by my sister in law a few miles away and we wanted to be close by in case anything happened. So we stayed in the UK and hired a canal boat for three days. It was terrible weather but loads of fun and very cosy and romantic.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to try to get organised early, it will pay off nearer to the day itself and then enjoy the day. It goes so quick!

Find Your Dream Wedding Dress… In A Click!

October 16th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

So. Cancel all plans and meetings for the rest of your afternoon.  Some favourite industry colleagues of mine have launched something rather special.

.

Find Your Dream Wedding Dress

.

.

The wedding dress hunt never got easier than this!

.

The team at Find Your Dream Wedding Dress say: this is a completely new concept, and the best idea ever. The minute he pops the question, and you have said yes, the search for your dream dress is underway.

.

Find Your Dream Wedding Dress brings together, in one beautiful, easy-to-navigate site, a world of wonderful dresses from the top designers and manufacturers – hundreds and hundreds of them – covering all design options and price points. It focuses on bridal gowns, and nothing other than bridal gowns – no flowers, no venues, no best-man speeches. Just gorgeous gowns.

.

It works so simply. Just pick out the features that really appeal to you. It could be a halter-neck, a cute fifties silhouette, a fabulous fairy-tale ball gown, or a slinky number with lots of vintage detailing. It could be glitter-loaded, or plain and simple. The choice is yours and you’ll see dozens of dream dresses that fit in with your ‘wish list’. Then you pop your favourites into your ‘dressing room’ and, if you want, you can go back for more choices by changing your criteria.

.

.

Find Your Dream Wedding Dress

.

.

Ready for a close up? Click on the dresses in your dressing room and you’ll get all the detail, from the fabric and colour options, size and price range, and personalisation opportunities to special design highlights – and that could include extras, like a sparkly belt or a lacy jacket. You’ll get different views of the gown and you’ll also get comments from the designer about what they like best about that particular style and why. What a great way to find out who’s who of the bridal gown designers!

.

But that’s not where the fun stops. You’ll be able to check, right there and then, the bridal shops that carry the collections you have picked. One click and an email will go to the shop you select, to say you are interested in a particular label. And you can make an appointment instantly, by email, to see what could be your own dream wedding dress.

.

.

Find Your Dream Wedding Dress

My friend and colleague Rachel Morgan, editor of Wedding Ideas Magazine loves the idea too, and says: Searching for your dream dress is the most exciting part of the wedding planning. This amazing new website brings together hundreds of gowns from all over the world, and in every price bracket. You can quickly see the designers and the details you like, whittle down your favourites and make an appointment to actually try on the dress – all with a click of a mouse.
