Fabulous Hens Go Vintage: An Era Of Experience

October 21st, 2013 | Julia Braime

An Era Of Experience

Brides Up North Featured Supplier Nicola of Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe has always had an eye for the beautiful, different and divine – and always manages to pull off her projects with aplomb.

That’s why, when she told me that she was teaming up with the lovely Sharon Lomas of For The Love Of Vintage, Bethany Jane Davies of The Vintage Beauty Parlour and And The Dish Ran Away With The Spoon, Didsbury to create fabulous vintage themed hen events, I knew that we could chuck out those tacky L plates for good.

I couldn’t wait to share the news of this classy and chic venture from a very talented group of Northern wedding industry suppliers on the pages of the blog.

An Era Of Experience

Sharon of For The Love Of Vintage says:  An Era of Experience brings a sense of vintage style to today’s modern hen party, combining themed craft workshop activities with a beauty parlour and afternoon tea. Our parties are ideal for hen’s of all ages, inclusive for younger & older family members.

An Era Of Experience

An Era Of Experience

An Era Of Experience

The craft workshops are accessible for all levels of sewing experience, so absolute beginners need not fear. These workshops can be a general vintage theme or can be specific to a chosen era such as 1920’s Flappers, 1930’s Hollywood Sirens or 1950’s Rockerbilly – 1920s & 1950s remain the firm favourites with our hens.

An Era Of Experience

We can also theme a beauty parlour workshop – all hens get a master class in either 1920’s Smokey Eyes, 1930’s perfect Hollywood Pout or the perfect beehive while the bride to be gets full hair & make-up.

No Era event would be complete without a fabulous afternoon tea served on vintage & antique china. Hen’s choose from a menu of baked delights which includes choice of three sandwiches, chocolate dipped strawberries, scones with clotted cream & jams, a choice of three cakes plus tea & coffee.

The Era team travels to the client’s venue be it at home, in an apartment or hotel, holiday cottages – we’ve even done one in a vintage dress boutique in Leeds! Great fun!

Simple Vintage: A Real Wedding In Scotland – Clare & Joe

March 27th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

Chantal Lachance-Gibson Photography

.

.

Time for another Real Wedding, I reckon!  I have some amazing real life celebrations ready to share with you over the next few days, and the first, this little beauty sent to me by real bride Clare and Chantal Lachance-Gibson Photography won’t disappoint.  Clare and Joe chose clean and modern styling to let their stunning venue and hand picked vintage detailing do the talking.  The result? A modern and pretty wedding with added old time romance.

.

And Clare?  You definitely picked the right dress.

.

Enjoy.

.

.

Chantal Lachance-Gibson Photography

.

.

Clare says:  We got engaged in Rome on 12/05/2011. We’d gone on a mini-trip to Dublin, Barcelona and ending in Rome in the space of a week. By the time we’d got to Rome we were both exhausted (and I’d given up hope of a proposal ‘cause I didn’t think he’d be able to keep it a secret through two cities already!).

We’d gone for dinner and then walked to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore which was all lit up with a fountain out front so it was all very romantic when he went down on one knee.

.

.

Chantal Lachance-Gibson Photography.

.

.

We originally planned to get married on the 07/04/13 but we brought it forward to 08/07/12 because we (well, I!) were getting bored of waiting for it to come along and worried about elderly relatives being able to make it. It worked out perfectly!

.

.

Chantal Lachance-Gibson Photography

.

.

Chantal Lachance-Gibson Photography

.

.

Our reception was at Glenskirlie Castle.  It was the first venue we saw! Glenskirlie have both a “House” and a “Castle” venue and as soon as I seen the castle I knew that’s where I wanted to get married. We did go see other venues but nothing even close to matched up to Glenskirlie. It ticked all the boxes – separate rooms for ceremony & reception, lovely gardens and plenty of quiet corners and rooms for guests to sneak away to when it all got too much and or they wanted to chat.

.

.

Chantal Lachance-Gibson Photography

.

.

Chantal Lachance-Gibson Photography

.

.

We didn’t have a theme.  Some elements swayed to almost vintage or “shabby chic” but there was no set theme, just what we liked. The décor of Glenskirlie really set off the vintage look though.  Our main colours were dusky pink and sage green which went gorgeously together.

.

.

I originally bought a dress from a lovely boutique in Glasgow but by in March, when the dress arrived – I didn’t like it!  A lot of soul searching and fast alterations later I had the most perfect dress from Laura Reece Bridal. I would highly recommend both Laura’s boutique and her seamstress Andrina Greig who did wonders.  I wore my late grandmother’s pearls and a gorgeous birdcage veil from www.lilybella.co.uk.

.

My bridesmaid – one of my best friends from school – picked her own dress from www.very.co.uk! I wanted something that she’d be able to wear again and that she loved.

.

Joe bought a kilt from Macgregor and Macduff in Glasgow in the tartan of the county in Ireland his family originates from, Donegal. His groomsmen (best man, two ushers and father of the groom and step-father of the bride) all wore a dark grey/black tartan.

Originally I was happy to take a taxi – but that idea was rubbished by just about everyone! We hired a car from Soverign Select who were absolutely excellent. My granda was unable to make the wedding at the very last minute and they were kind enough to pick me up, drive me to his house and wait for me to have a few moments and photographs with him – which was really special.  The driver looked very dapper in his hat too!

.

.

Chantal Lachance-Gibson Photography

.

.

I had originally bought two bouquets of silk cala lilies but about a week before the wedding my mum and I decided that real flowers would be nicer so she very generously bought me a lovely bouquet of cala lilies from a local florist which – as it turns out – was probably one of the best decisions we’d made, they were gorgeous.

For the ceremony we had a harpist (Joanna Chaing) who was great. Originally I’d asked for a string quartet but Joe talked me down! For the reception we chose a 4 piece band – Moondance – who were great. The dance floor was full all night!

Smooch Rings made both of our rings to order – for less or around the same as it’d cost on the high street, and offer free cleaning/replating for life.

We decided to do a lot of the decorations ourselves –  Melody Maison was a godsend for centrepieces and “bits” (although I now want to decorate my whole house from there!).  For chair covers we used a small company that we found on Gumtree who cut our costs enormously.

Our cake was made by a friend of mine – looked great and tasted delicious as well!

The whole day is a bit of a blur to me really! I loved getting everyone together for photos and by the looks of things I spent the whole day laughing or grinning, so I must have loved it all!  The speeches – although they made me both cringe and cry at separate parts, were lovely. I think the importance of them sometimes gets missed but I’d never do without them.

.

.

Chantal Lachance-Gibson Photography

.

.

After the wedding we spent four days in New York and ten in Playa Del Carmen in Mexico. New York was exhausting but Mexico was the most relaxed I’ve ever been – never wanted to come home!

.

.

Chantal Lachance-Gibson Photography

.

.

My top tip for Brides Up North would be – if you really want something, get it. Buying a second dress was obviously a huge inconvenience (and cost!) but I love my wedding photos and I can’t imagine feeling the same if I’d wore that other dress.  Pick your suppliers carefully – your photographer is one of the most important parts – not of the day itself – but of your memories forever! We were lucky enough to meet Chantal who I have since recommended to everyone who’s even considered a photographer!

.

.

Chantal Lachance-Gibson Photography

.

.

Congratulations Clare & Joe!

.

Fancy seeing your own Real Wedding on these pages?  Here’s how.

Time to say hello to another of our fabulous Brides Up North Featured Suppliers, the lovely Rebecca (that’s her on her own wedding day, above!) of online retailer Be.Loved Bridal and her even lovelier treasure chest of bridal accessory delights.

.

Credit cards at the ready ladies, if you’ve been looking for ways to add some wow to your bridal style, look no further!  Let’s find out more…

.

Why did you decide to launch Be.loved Bridal and what is your background?

.

I had always been a big internet shopper so when I got in engaged I aimed to do a whatever I could online to fit in with my job which was really demanding. Apart from my dress I bought all the accessories for my wedding outfit online but found I had to buy from so many different sites to get the look I wanted.  I therefore started to dream up Be.loved Bridal, to do some of the leg work for brides a put together a selection of brands and product from the massive choice that’s out there.  I wanted to create something that was fashionable and affordable, but a website where brides could simply just enjoy browsing, which we know if all part of the fun!  Prior to setting up the website I worked as a womens’ wear buyer for major high street retailers including Republic, Debenhams and Mammas and Papas. As a result of my experience I have been able to source product, from local handmade designs to designer pieces from Europe and beyond!

.

The brand name came from my Grandparents and a ring which my Granddad bought for my Grandma.  My Grandma was definitely his beloved.  I love the meaning of beloved, it means: "A beloved person, thing, or place is one that you feel great affection for." and I think this is how your should feel about the pieces you wear on your wedding day, they will become heirlooms and memories to keep forever from your big day.

.

.

Be.Loved Bridal Accessories

.

.

How do you select the products that are featured in your online shop?  Tell us about the process?

.

I have built up a number of contacts over the years and this combined with sourcing both here and abroad gives me plenty to choose from.  We are constantly expanding the collection and have new pieces arriving all the time.  We have fallen in love with our vintage bridal garters from SomethIng Old, Something Blue – they are handmade here in Yorkshire and no two designs are the same.  My designer uses only genuine antique lace and some of the trims are also beautiful vintage finds.   Each garter include something old and something blue so all that’s left is your something borrowed and new!   We can also help brides if they have any special request and talk to our designers and suppliers to see if we can source the perfect piece for our brides.

.

.

Be.Loved Bridal Accessories

.

Be.Loved Bridal Accessories

.

.

What bridal accessories are available to buy at Be.Loved Bridal?

.

We offer a beautiful selection of handbags, shoes, veils and tiaras and we are adding new brands and pieces all the time.  We are have a range of genuine vintage jewellery and handmade antique lace garters too which are completely one off unique pieces, therefore they double up as your something old, giving you one less thing on your to do list!

Be.Loved Bridal Accessories

.

.

Do you stock pieces that would be appropriate for Bridesmaids?  What would you recommend?

.

Some of the vintage jewellery is truly stunning and would make great bridesmaid gifts and pieces for them to cherish from your wedding day.  They are all completely unique and genuine vintage pieces.  I would highly recommend the vintage swirl earrings £38 they are beautiful, but they are the only pair!  Sourced from an antiques’ fair they were hard to find!  If you are following in Kate Middleton’s footsteps and your bridesmaid are wearing ivory that I would recommend our deco inspired clutch bag as the perfect accessory for the day.

.

.

Be.Loved Bridal Accessories

.

.

What about Mother of The Bride?  What would you recommend?.

.

.

.

.

.

.

We aim to deliver our own unique edit of the all the bridal accessories out there for our brides to be.  At Be.loved Bridal we think your wedding day should be everything a bride has ever dreamed of and we want to help you create your own unique bridal look.  Your wedding outfit goes far beyond your wedding dress, so we want to help you find the perfect finishing touches that make you individual and unique on your wedding day.

.

.

.

.

What bridal accessory trends have been popular in 2012 and what trends do you see emerging in 2013 and beyond?

.

In 2012 the whole vintage bridal trend was still key has it has been for the last few seasons. I think the romance of getting married coupled with the beauty of some of the vintage designs means it will be a popular trend for some time to come too!

.

.

Be.Loved Bridal Accessories

.

.

For 2013 I think we will see more customising trends coming through as we see brides looking for ways to truly personalise their wedding day.  We have seen this previously in the way brides decorate their venues and wedding stationery. Now we are seeing brides adding shoe clips or vintage brooches to their handbag and shoes or simply taking sampling of lace from their wedding dress to decorate their bouquet. At Be.Loved we have done our own bit of customising with our feather diamante handbag hand embellished with ivory ostrich feathers or our clutch bag decorated with genuine vintage lace.

.

.

Be.Loved Bridal Accessories

.

.

Be.Loved Bridal Accessories

.

.

We also think the 1950’s will be an important trend in 2013, think Audrey Hepburn and pinched in waists.  This post war ear was all about indulgence with bridal dresses, using lots of fabric to create full skirts and petticoats.  The accessories that finish this look are the birdcage wedding veil, red shoes and of course red lips!

.

.

Be.Loved Bridal Accessories

.

.

Lastly the forehead band continues to be a key item for brides looking for something a little different.  Inspired by the 1920’s the forehead band has taken on an edgier role in recent seasons.  We love the forehead bands available at Be.loved Bridal from £40 with an ethereal twist inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream they are both bohemian  and modern at the same time.

.

.

Be.Loved Bridal Accessories

.

.

Can you give Brides Up North an idea on price and can you do a discount for Brides Up North readers?

.

Prices start from £28 we pride ourselves on beautiful quality and some top brands at affordable prices. I would love to offer a 10% discount plus free delivery over £50 especially for Brides Up North readers just enter code BRIDESUPNORTH into the checkout to obtain the discount.  Click here to start shopping!

.

.

What can Brides Up North expect when they use your service?

.

We operate like all the online retailers our brides are used to, our website is easy to use and our delivery service is fast and our customers are always in love with their purchases when they arrive.   Brides can shop by product or by brands as we will be soon adding in shop by style.  We like to think at Be.loved Bridal we are a helpful service taking out some of the hours of trawling through various websites to find accessories that suit your personality.   Brides who are looking for something a little unique without wanting to break the bank will love our collections.

.

.

What is your current favourite piece and why?

.

My favourite piece is the Flo wedding shoe. The attention to detail is amazing with diamante covered heel and ditsy print lining.   It comes with cushioned inner sole for comfort as heel all day can be hard on your feet and we think it may have taken a little inspiration from the channel footwear collections available for £87 (£78.30 for Brides up North if you use our promotional code!) If I was getting married again this would certainly be my shoe of choice!

.

.

Be.Loved Bridal Accessories

.

.

Is there a particular style of jewellery or bridal accessory that has been immediately popular with your bridal customers?

.

The asymmetric headpieces have been really popular with more and more people adoring the vintage trend.  Whichever decade you choose as your theme the asymmetric headband instantly invokes images of bygone era and looks feminine and elegant on any bride.  Choose from delicate floral designs from Ivory & Co at £55 or the striking Anemone headpiece from Rainbow Club £125.   I personally think they add a touch of fashion as well as vintage to your bridal look.

.

.

Be.Loved Bridal Accessories

.

.

How are your products packaged?  Do they make good gifts?

.

Many of our product come in a gift box and all products come wrapped in tissue paper and love!

.

.

How can Brides Up North get in touch with you/ find out more?

The softest chiffon florals, intricate yet delicate beadwork and romantic sheer edging whisper the arrival of Blush, the third collection from vintage inspired bridal accessories designer, Silver Sixpence in her Shoe.

.

Each beautifully hand-crafted accessory nods to the elegance of decades past and yet is the definition of modern bridal adornment, as much inspired by designer Nicola Wellard’s recent travels in Europe and beyond as they are by the romance of a bygone era.

Treasure & Trinkets! Supplier Showcase: By Kelcie Jewellery

June 6th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

A recently discovered online vintage treasure trove: Brides Up North Featured Supplier By Kelcie.

.

.

Andrew Scott Clarke for By Kelcie

.

.

Kelcie makes bridal hair combs and alice bands by hand using vintage collectables sourced from around the World.  She also has a bespoke service – you might have an old piece of jewellery hiding away at home that you would like to incorporate on your day – and also a ‘Something New’ collection, handmade using beads, sparkles, pearls and collectable treats.  Vintage jewellery, a handmade jewellery range and evening bags are also available online.  All in all, well worth a rummage!

.

I’ve already lost hours (and may have nabbed a few trinkets for myself)!

.

.

Andrew Scott Clarke for By Kelcie

.

.

Kelcie, of By Kelcie, says: I’ve always had a love of making things, I love jewellery as all girls do.  My Husband, Andrew Scott Clarke is a Wedding photographer so I sort of put the two together and here I am.

.

.

Andrew Scott Clarke for By Kelcie

.

.

My lines of jewellery and collections have grown and expanded as I’ve gone along. I started out just using vintage finds to create my hair pieces, the ‘Something Old’ collection, but as I’ve grown I’ve sourced collectables worldwide – new and vintage – and created the ‘Something New’ collection too.

.

.

Andrew Scott Clarke for By Kelcie

.

.

My eyes started to wander whilst looking for thing to take apart and then the ‘Vintage’ collection was born: beautiful old pieces of jewellery and handbags were jumping out at me that were just too lovely not to seen and used. Pieces of yester year that deserve to sparkle on someone’s special day.

.

The ‘By Kelcie’ collection was another happy accident. I was searching the web, as you do (!) and stumbled across jewellery findings that looked very much like the ones in my logo. This collection is for everyday wear, bridesmaids or a beautiful gift.

.

Come and visit my website to explore.

At the moment my shop is purely online, although I may be spotted at the odd wedding fair! I do offer a bespoke service, which is available on request for those brides who may have an old piece of jewellery they wish to incorporate into a hair piece.

.

Mothers of the bride and bridesmaids all have to look glam too! There’s plenty of sparkly treats suitable for mums and maids!

If something you see has been sold please get in touch and I will do my best to find something similar.

I don’t have any personal favourites, each piece I buy jumps out at me so I guess they’re all my favourites. It’s hard not to get emotionally attached when you’ve brought something back to life again.

Morning all!  I am super excited to tell you all about a special event coming up shortly at one of my very favourite bridal boutiques (I love it so much that happily spent a day as a “Saturday Girl” there last year so that I could really get under the skin of the industry and yes, play amongst the lace and pearls!).

.

On Friday 15th June 2012, The White Room Sheffield will open it’s doors from 3pm – 8pm to host an exclusive accessories event with Debbie Carlisle

Debbie will be on hand at the event to inspire and advise with her entire collection (I repeat, for emphasis, HER ENTIRE COLLECTION!) of headpieces and cuffs for brides and their bridesmaids.  With a whopping 10% discount for purchases made at the event only, this is definitely NOT TO BE MISSED.

.

Having seen Debbie’s designs first hand I can vouch for their beauty and quality, with such exquisite detailing.  And don’t forget to check out some of the stunning vintage jewellery bouquets too.  If I were you, I’d be nowhere else but The White Room Sheffield come Friday 15th June.  Just don’t tell everyone
