Over the festive period I’ll be recapping some of my very favourite Real Weddings from the last 12 months on the wedding blog. It’s been a tough choice! In true Brides Up North style, each wedding featured on these pages is unique, beautiful and gorgeously personal. It’s been an exceptionally fabulous year! Enjoy…

Am I spoiling you this week or what?! I have another beautiful Real Wedding to share with you this morning sent to me by Shelly of Toast and real bride Lysette.  Now I see a lot of DIY weddings, but Lysette and her family have some serious skills in this department.  Just check out the cake, table decorations and sweetie table!  Professional standard stuff.

.

Watch out for all the delectable details in this fabulous affair, not least the appearance of one perfectly groomed little piggy!

Lysette says:  Michael asked me to marry his on holiday in Turkey in 2009, and we tied the knot on 26th May 2012.  Our Ceremony was held at Cusworth Hall and after drinks, photos and playing with a baby pig on a lead we went on to Fishlake Mill.

We actually chose our reception venue first, Fishlake Mill. The setting was perfect with picturesque rolling fields that go on for miles. It is a beautiful venue that’s both sophisticated yet relaxed. We were eager to be able to put our own stamp on a venue and at the Mill we were able to do that. Graham and Sheena pretty much gave us a free rein to decorate and really welcomed us making us feel at home. As well as the beautiful setting, the windmill itself is truly awesome- a beautiful place to spend our first night as husband and wife. Another bonus for me personal was the presence of animals; horses, peacocks, ducks and even a goat.

.

Cusworth Hall was also an easy choice as it is by far the best place in the area for a non religious wedding. As it is simple the most amazing backdrop for photographs.

We had a bit of an English tea party theme: teapots, teacups and tons of bunting, with purple and florals as our colour scheme.

I bought my dress from Jaynes of Doncaster- It’s an amazing dramatic fishtail style dress. I loved it because of the unusual colour and the masses of detail.

.

My mum made my beautiful crystal & pearl bouquet which included family heirlooms, buttons and brooches. I love that I can keep it forever and if I wanted to in the future I could make it back into jewellery.

I love my bridesmaids dresses almost as much as my own dress. I sourced the material and explained the 50’s style I wanted and then Kelly at Be Envied Bridal Wear made them.

I travelled to the ceremony in a 1979 convertible VW beetle in white. I kept the roof up on the way there. Although after the ceremony I was persuaded to through caution to the wind, forget about my hair and have the roof down. Which was loads of fun and totally worth the mess it made of my hair. The bridesmaids went in a 1967 VW split screen campervan which was fabbo. Both were supplied by Chris at Timeless Classic.

As I am a girl that loves to be in control and hates surprises, I am amazed to say that my two of my favourite parts of my wedding day were surprises. The moment I saw the amazing little pig Lara, that had come to see me on my special day. I love pigs and always have, as a surprise, my mum and Aunty had arranged for a baby pig on a lead to be there after the ceremony. A little bizarre, I know, but it made me (and some of my guests), smile.

.
Receiving a surprise gift from my husband- beautiful purple floral Irregular Choice shoes that he had begged to be made for my giant size 9 feet years ago, they finally have started making them!

All decorations were sourced and created by my mum, my sister and I. Everything from flowers and favours to name cards and table decorations.

.

Our Fingerprint Tree guest book was made by my sister, the guests seemed to like their getting the hands dirty to contribute towards a keepsake for us.

Mike’s Father made a red post box for any cards to be deposited into. This received endless compliments and was perfect for us as I was a post lady when Mike and I got together.

Everyone from the flower girls to the grandparents enjoyed our sweetie table! Mis-matched jars were collected which we filled with various treats for our guests to help themselves.

I made my own cake in various shades of purple, with vintage buttons and a giant teapot to top it off. It was made of brandy soaked fruit cake, victoria sponge and chocolate cake.  Being real foodies, to ensure no one went hungry, Mike insisted we had a three tier pork pie cake consisting of three different flavours.

Madison are a three piece band from Liverpool (madisonparty.co.uk) they kept the dance floor full all night and really made the evening perfect. They even let my sister sing with them, one of my favourite songs “Ironic” by Alanis Morisette, which really meant a lot to me and my family. To keep people dancing when in between the band’s sets, we had one of Mike’s close friends who is a nightclub DJ- Matt Goodwin, who really worked hard to keep everything running smoothly.

We have to give a mention to our photographer – Shelly from Toast – she came along all day and “blended in” so well.  So many people mentioned how good she was, and the photo booth she brought along was great fun!

After the wedding, we went on a mini tour of Italy starting in Venice and moving south to Rome, Naples, Sorrento and Capri. It was truly amazing and we did not want to come home.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to plan well ahead and delegate to bridesmaids, family and friends so that you can relax and enjoy your wedding day.

.

My vintage tea party style wedding was very DIY which enabled me to get exactly what I wanted within budget. It also gave me an immense sense of pride to see everything we’ve done come together so beautifully. I’d definitely recommend brides have a go at a bit of DIY, but don’t forget to stop and relax the day/morning before your wedding.

Multi-coloured Canvas! A Real Teepee Wedding In Yorkshire – Catherine & Tom

August 3rd, 2012 | Julia Braime

Papakata wedding by Chris Milner Photography

.

When this beautiful (and fun!) Real Wedding shot by Brides Up North Featured Supplier Chris Milner Photography landed in my inbox this week I just couldn’t wait to share it with you, so I bumped my line up of posts for a Friday afternoon and decided to treat y’all instead.

.

The perfect way to finish a bumper week of Real Weddings here on the wedding blog, and a sunny(ish) Friday.  Relish in it!

.

Have a great weekend Brides Up North!  No rest for the wicked though, I’ll be back here bright and early tomorrow with more loveliness for you to get stuck into.  See you then!

Catherine says:  Thomas proposed on my birthday in May 2011 at our home in Leeds. He’d been trying to think of a different and original way of asking me to marry him. He’d done the proper thing of asking my Dad first but then struggled with how he was going to execute the proposal! In the end, one of my favourite songs begun to play whilst we were getting ready to go visit my parents and he got down on one knee and asked me. It was simple and perfect.

We were married on Saturday 2nd June 2012 at St Particks Church, Patrington, East Yorkshire followed by the reception in teepees on my parents farm where I grew up.

We chose to use Papakata for our teepees as they were original, unique, fitted in with the look of the farm and suited our personalities. Also, it enabled us to have our reception on the farm which is a place that means a lot to us both.  Papakata were amazing. They couldn’t do enough for us from start to finish.

We didn’t originally have a theme, but when people asked us we said the theme was “us”; everything that we did was to reflect our personalities and the things we liked, which made it great fun to plan! As we began to design our wedding invitations, we adopted the tag line “All you need is love”, and this then appeared in various forms throughout the day. We used this song to walk out of the church to!

.

Our colour scheme was multi-coloured. We wanted a mix of everything, which made it easy to plan. All the groomsmen had multi-coloured ties and the bridesmaids were in a burnt coral colour.

We used I Love VW Weddings for our VW camper van which was used to transport the bridal party to and from church. The church was a short distance from the farm so two cars would have been a waste of money so we went for the van which took the bridesmaids and then returned for myself and Dad, and then brought the girls and me and Thomas back to the farm.

I always knew my dress would have lace on it so this is what I looked for. I was reluctant to spend a lot on a dress so after going to a couple of bridal shops and knowing exactly what I did and didn’t like, a friend told me about the Kirkstall Bridal Warehouse, which sells designer dresses at 70% off retail prices due to them being ex catwalk or sample dresses. My dress was a 2-piece by Cymbeline and did have long sleeves but I asked my seamstress to customise it by cutting them off and making a choker and gloves with the lace.

.

My bridesmaids wore a one shoulder strap full length dress from Dessy. This was in the colour firecraker from a shop in Bingley. Their brooches were their gift from me, handmade by Lou Lou Puchalka, Leeds.

I carried a simple but vibrant bouquet of ranunculus which were a coral orange. They were so unusual and different.   Fleurs de Lisa provided the bridal bouquet and wild flowers for the tables.

We decorated the teepee with lots of home made touches: 70 hand-made (by the bride) love heart cushions which we tied to the back of the chairs; a caricature of ourselves, which a friend did as a wedding gift for our name cards and table number signs; “Drink me” tags on the bottles of wine; wish tags instead of a guest book – each guest was able to send us a short message or wish for our future together – and jars (collected over a few months with the help of family and friends) with hay tied round the tops and filled with natural looking flowers.

For our wedding cake we decided to go for cheese as we couldn’t find a cake that we loved as much. We got it from Milly’s Organic shop in Leeds and constructed it ourselves on the day. On the back of this, and because Thomas loves it, we did a pork pie wedding cake which we served up alongside the cheese evening buffet and went down a storm.

There were so many elements of the day we loved so couldn’t narrow it down to just one moment. I think overall, having all our friends and family with us at one time was just amazing and so much fun. The day was exactly how we’d planned it.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to enjoy every moment of planning your wedding and have no regrets. You only get to plan and experience your wedding once so let your personality and passions show through your wedding. We had so much fun planning the wedding together and that showed in the day itself. Give yourself plenty of time and try not to over think or over complicate things, just go with the flow and the ideas will follow.

Congratulations Catherine & Thomas!
