independent woman: yorkshire bridal boutique owner hayley hoyle on why you should buy from the professionals

July 19th, 2018 | Rachel Parry

Harrogate Wedding Lounge (4)

Having just shared details of my own dress shopping experience in this wedding diary instalment (I’m a 2019-bride-to-be don’t you know?!) this afternoon’s post further backs-up my findings as we hear from industry expert and Brides Up North Sponsor, Hayley Hoyle, on why ladies should visit independent bridal boutiques when searching for their dream gown.

As the owner of not one, but two top Yorkshire boutiques – The Harrogate Wedding Lounge and The Bridal Collection Harrogate – Hayley is well placed to speak on this topic and advise brides-to-be on how to get the most out of this precious part of the planning.

A far cry from a high-street changing room, Hayley explains the welcoming ambience, top styling and seamstress service and aftercare that awaits brides and these small, professional businesses. She also makes clear that ladies of all budgets can shop at independent boutiques and the service is warm, friendly and fun – not at all like the Pretty Woman style connotations that some conjure up in their heads.

My experience of such businesses was exactly as Hayley describes – real women dressing real women to help find that one special gown that ticks all the boxes while providing professional support along the way that you just won’t find elsewhere. So, ladies, here’s why you’ll want to support your independent sisters…

Bridal Collection (6)

hayley says: For some, buying their wedding gown is a prospect filled with excitement, giddiness and hopes of the perfect shopping trip filled with friends, fizz and finding the one. For others the thought is nothing short of terrifying. Fears of being squeezed in to samples too small or bulldog clipped into samples three-sizes too big while your nearest and dearest pick fault at every part of the dress, or even worse, your body in the dress. Whatever your inclination toward it, after more than ten years in the industry I can confirm that for the most part finding, buying and fitting your wedding gown is an intimate, emotionally charged, sometimes nerve wracking but ultimately beautiful experience, or at least that’s what my hope is for all of my brides.

Harrogate Wedding Lounge (3)

It should be undertaken with your most trusted advisors; the person or people who know you most and who’s number one priority is your happiness. This also applies to the place you choose to shop for your gown. As an independent boutique, myself and my team make it our business to get to know you. Your hopes and dreams for the dress and the day. We understand your fears, your hang-ups and all your insecurities. We are women too remember. We don’t care that your pants don’t match your bra today or that you have just had lunch and feel like have a food baby going on, all we care about is you relaxing and having fun finding a gown that truly represents you, and that you feel and look incredible in.

Harrogate Wedding Lounge (2)

Independent boutiques go much further than selling wedding dresses, I certainly don’t see that as my job at all and I am pretty sure other independents would say the same. We are councillors, confidants, mediators, the shoulder to cry on, the person who holds the tissues – and the prosecco! But above all we are stylists. Our space and that of many other boutiques I know are beautifully created and full of inspiration. Everything matters; the calming atmosphere, beautiful scents, gorgeous flowers, endless accessories, soft music and of course the beautiful gowns and the team of experienced stylists that know our products inside out and are passionate about your experience with us.

Harrogate Wedding Lounge (6)

My team accompany me to all of our designers’ collection launches, they know about construction, fabric options, possible changes that can be made and make personal recommendations for you based on your body type and desires. Unlike many other less personal options available to brides when choosing their dress, our team are trained to work with you individually, hand pick gowns we know will knock your socks off and give you the very best advice on fit. We don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach, we can recommend options such as bespoke sizing – like a size 14 top and 18 bottom. Made to measure for a large bust or a short torso. The result? A unique experience totally tailored to you, your ideas and your body.

laidback glam. a chic wedding with a rustic twist at the saddleworth hotel – hannah & tom

November 11th, 2016 | Alexis Forsyth

a-chic-rustic-wedding-c-james-tracey-photography-48

Today on the blog we bring you a beautiful real wedding in the picturesque foothills of the Pennines.

After a three-year engagement, Hannah and Tom exchanged vows over the May bank holiday weekend, in the quaint setting of the village church in Ripponden.

Blending rustic charm with an elegant and contemporary décor – not to mention one of the most stunning balconied ballrooms we have ever seen – The Saddleworth Hotel provided the gorgeous backdrop to the couple’s memorable celebrations.

With handwritten notes to each and every guest, as well as a special donation to a charity close to their hearts – this was a wedding brimming with nostalgia and personal touches from start to finish.

With images by Brides Up North Sponsor, James Tracey Photography.

hannah says: We got engaged three years ago. Tom arranged for us to go away for the weekend to one of our favourite hotels. He hired a beach hut and brought along a picnic with prosecco. He pulled out the ring which he’d had made for me and, obviously, I said yes. We then headed back to the hotel, where he’d arranged to meet my parents for a meal to celebrate.

We got married on Saturday 28th May 2016. I’m a teacher so we needed a date that fitted in with the school holidays, and with a good chance of nice weather! The bank holiday weekend fell in the middle of our spring bank holiday, so it was perfect.

a-chic-rustic-wedding-c-james-tracey-photography-18

We tied the knot at St Bartholomew’s Church, in Ripponden. This is our village church and it was also the church I went to whilst growing up, so it was really special to get married there.

Our reception was at The Saddleworth Hotel in Delph. It was actually the first venue we looked at, and nothing else came close. We loved the mix of old and new – the ballroom is amazing and fitted really well with our vision for the day. The double height room really is special.  The venue and grounds are absolutely stunning and the team there is brilliant; nothing is too much trouble.

We chose The Saddleworth Hotel partly because of its glamorous setting and wanted to incorporate this theme within our wedding. We wanted our day to be classic and glam, but at the same time reflect us as a couple and be laidback enough for guests to really enjoy themselves. We wanted our guests to feel special, and spot those little touches that made the day about us as a couple and as individuals. So, not an easy job!

a-chic-rustic-wedding-c-james-tracey-photography-35

We didn’t have a specific colour scheme, although the bridesmaids wore blush pink dresses and the flowers were blush pink and white. Everything else we picked because we loved it and it fitted our idea for the day.

a-chic-rustic-wedding-c-james-tracey-photography-53

My dress was a chiffon and beaded Justin Alexander gown, which I bought from The Harrogate Wedding Lounge. I had an idea of what I wanted when I started looking for dresses, and this was absolutely not it! But when I tried the dress on, I swished around the room and felt like an amazing version of me! It wasn’t what I set out to get, but it was the perfect dress for our day.

Supplier Spotlight: So Sassi Launches In Yorkshire With The Bridal Gown!

March 4th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

I recently featured the brand new So Sassi label as an eye candy post on the wedding blog, to great excitement on Twitter and Facebook from my readers (click here to recap), and was happy to let Yorkshire brides know that Brides Up North Featured Supplier The Bridal Gown in Otley has become an approved stockist of this gorgeously fresh new collection.

Now if I know my Featured Suppliers (and it turns out that I do), they are never ones to let exciting occasions pass them by!  Step forward Julie of The Bridal Gown, who decided to throw a little launch party to welcome the label to Yorkshire…

Julie of The Bridal Gown says: So Sassi is a new label by Sassy Holford.  The line is aimed at a young fashionable bride being a little less expensive that other Sassy Holford labels but with the quality and attention to detail you would expect from this leading designer house. All of the dresses are designed and made in Taunton in Somerset. Sassy acts as design director for the So Sassi label and has a young talented team of designers working for her.

The inspiration for the launch event came from the desire to do something different to celebrate the arrival of the collection in the boutique.  We looked for somewhere with atmosphere to do a catwalk show that still linked with wedding themes and found it at Otley All Saints Parish Church. We felt that it would give brides a rare opportunity to see gowns “walking down the aisle” and imagine themselves in that setting. We also displayed dresses on the top of the pews to give good visibility and add more atmosphere.

Leafy Couture created our amazing floral displays and dressed the church, I gave Sarah a brief about the So Sassi label and she worked her magic to perfection. The hair was by Yazz Number One Salon.  I sent photos of models and images of the dresses and let the stylist’s creativity run wild.  The results were fantastic

The launch went really well, despite some of the worst winter weather in seven years!  The catwalk show looked amazing and the atmosphere was electric – everyone I talked to absolutely loved it. We will be doing another event in the Summer and we hope to make the next even more spectacular and creative.  The ideas are already flowing!  Watch this space!

Set your Sky Boxes For ITV’s The Wedding Shop! Confetti & Lace Are Hitting The Small Screens!

February 25th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

Now, if you follow me over on Twitter or Facebook, you will know that I love a bit of telly as much as the next person.  My absolute favourite type of telly?  Downton Abbey.  End of.

.

Lady Mary and co aside though, reality style documentaries or shows like The Apprentice, Grand Designs or One Born Every Minute take the biscuit for me (although given my own personal circumstances right now – huge bump and just about to pop – I’ve been avoiding that last one diligently).

.

So imagine my excitement when my friend Abbi at Confeffi and Lace – remember our huge £2,000 wedding dress giveaway here on the wedding blog last year?! – told me all about the one hour ITV film documentary that has followed their boutiques (mainly their Pudsey branch here in Yorkshire) their staff, what bridal retailers do and some of their lovely customers over 10 months last year.

.

“Anyone can walk through the door. We never know what we’re getting. In our diary all we’ve got is a name. Three hours later we probably know their life story from start to finish.”  Marg, Wedding Shop Assistant

.

The Wedding Shop is on prime time ITV, 9pm on Thursday 28th February (this Thursday!) and is estimated to draw over one million viewers. One million!  Abbi tells us that “We’re already overrun in the shops with appointments so it’s great for us, all our suppliers, associates, Leeds, Harrogate, Yorkshire and the Wedding Industry”.  And that, readers, makes me very happy indeed.

.

.

The Wedding Shop courtesy of ITV

.

.

From the ITV press centre: Every year around 250,000 couples tie the knot in the UK. Confetti and Lace is one of Yorkshire’s busiest wedding shops with up to 100 brides a month coming to choose that all important item, their wedding dress.

.

The Wedding Shop provides a funny, heartfelt and unique insight into British lives and attitudes to marriage.  This new 60-minute documentary follows day-to-day life at the shop and the stories of three brides as they approach their big day. In doing so it captures a glimpse into the lives of families at one of the most stressful and happiest times they will ever experience.

.

From tears and tantrums to weather mishaps and family fallouts, shop owner Abbi Lewis has learnt to expect the unexpected and admits to having seen it all. She explains: “Not everything goes to plan. I’ve seen bridesmaids slap each other.”   But along with her two right-hand women Marg and Jane, their shared enthusiasm and love of their jobs is without question and they inevitably become very emotionally attached to their brides. As Marg explains: “Every single day we hear a different story and everything is different. You never, ever get bored of this job because every single girl is unique.” Jane explains: “Probably a good comparison, although not the same, is a midwife, who’s there for the birth of somebody’s child. You’re there for the build-up to somebody’s wedding day so if we can make that little bit of a difference, and make it perfect, then it’s a good job done.”

.

We meet bride Tammy, 24, who has asked her nan Betty to help her choose a dress, as her mum isn’t invited to the wedding and they haven’t spoken for five years. Tammy explains “I do think about it a lot but then there’s a part of me that thinks – it’s her loss. There were just that many more bad times than good times, that the bad just overrules it and I just think – I don’t want you there to ruin it.” Tammy’s dad Chris is looking forward to walking her up the aisle, there is just the small matter to resolve over his preferred choice of attire for the occasion. He says “The outrageous option is the leather jacket with the big skull and the Mohican hair…”

.

Jo is 36 and has been married to Darren for nine years. She wants to celebrate her ten-year anniversary by renewing her vows in a dress fit for a princess, as her family were absent from the first wedding due to religious differences. Jo is relishing the chance to be a bride all over again and there is no expense spared. She says: “We’ll do it more as a fairytale than as a proper traditional wedding. We’re not quite sure how I should arrive yet, whether it should be a glass carriage, a white horse or a pink helicopter…”

.

Natasha is marrying Ches, her childhood sweetheart. Their teenage romance ended, only to be rekindled a decade later. Her daughter Taylor-Leigh is her chief bridesmaid. Taylor-Leigh’s dad died in a car accident before she was born and Natasha has been a single mum ever since. She says: “I’ve always been honest with her about the whole situation…so nobody else can ever say ‘this is what happened’…it’s hard sometimes because she’s never had a male figure in her life.”  But there is complete panic at the wedding shop the night before the wedding when Natasha still hasn’t arrived to collect her dress. Has she had second thoughts about the wedding?

Spoil Yourself! Supplier Showcase: Elegance Bridal Boutique

August 18th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

What’s Saturday for if it’s not for spoiling yourself?  I know one lady – Brides Up North Featured Supplier Julia of Elegance Bridal Studio – who can help you to do just that.

.

With accolades for amazing customer service coming at them from all directions, you’d do well to direct your wedding dress hunt their way.

.

Have a fantastic weekend!

.

.

Elegance Bridal Studio

.

.

When did Elegance Bridal Studio open and what is your background?

.

Elegance Bridal Studio was born in August 2005. It was always an ambition of mine since I can remember to work in the bridal industry. I guess you could call it my vocation in life, my mum would have to drag me away from the local bridal shop window as I would insist on walking past it when we went to town shopping on a Saturday, just so I could catch a glimpse of all the beautiful dresses. Upon leaving school I enquired at two local bridal shops (there were only two at that time) but they were both family run and they had no vacancies for a 16 year old, so I had to put my dream on the back burner. I then had a mixed career in retail, beauty therapy and also hospitality working at 5* level, which looking back has been good grounding as I use almost all the skills and training that I learnt in my past employment, which has helped me build my business. I also sold my home to finance my dream, as I didn’t want to start my business in debt with a mortgage.  Given the recent recession it was the right decision to make and I do not regret it one little bit, however I wouldn’t recommend it for the faint hearted!

.

.

What lines of wedding gowns do you stock?

.

The designers that we stock have all been chosen not only for their amazing designs but also for their reputation and reliability within the bridal industry. We currently stock beautiful gowns by Trudy Lee whose designs are red carpet glamour with a touch of fairy-tale without the expense.  They give today’s bride excellent value for money.  Bride’s are often pleasantly surprised when they see the price tag.

.

Our next designer is the fabulous Jean Fox who has been making brides beautiful for over 80 years, they are an Australian company based in Sydney and they have a such a huge selection of designs.  It is always hard for us to choose from their new collections because they are all truly divine.  The internal corsetry within these gowns are absolutely superb and flatter any figure which eliminates the need for a bridal corset to be worn providing total comfort for the bride.  These gowns are so lightweight that they can be worn anywhere around the world which means that brides getting married abroad can have an actual bridal gown not just the typical floaty destination gown.  New for us this year are the Jean Fox couture silk gowns that have just arrived, these gowns are truly special, all handmade in Australia using only the very finest silks and embellishments whilst also giving brides so many options in change of design.  If you prefer a sweetheart neckline or maybe a shorter train or even some delicate straps, then you can have whatever your heart desires.  We actually witnessed a silk gown being made when we visited their workrooms in Sydney and, it was fascinating to watch the highly skilled seamstress create these beautiful gowns.  You could see how much care and attention went into each detail of the gown.  Whilst each crystal was sewn into place by hand, there is also a little finishing touch that every Jean Fox silk gown has which is her signature blue bow that’s sewn onto the inside of the dress, so you never forget your something blue.

.

Last but certainly not least are the show stopping designs by the multi award winning bridal designer Wendy Makin who is based in Brisbane, Australia. Wendy’s gowns from her Bella Donna Collection are fresh, modern & affordable with a choice of little added extras such as flowers, vintage brooches, sparkly belts and lace cap sleeves. Brides can simply change their look from day to evening whilst also having some flexibility in change of design and of course they are lightweight gowns that can be worn at home or abroad! We have just taken delivery of her new designs and we have fallen in love with them.

.

.

.

.

What lines of accessories do you stock?

.

We have a very sparkly selection of accessories due to my love for anything that sparkles! I have hand picked each accessory individually to compliment our gowns, so that brides can choose from several different pieces before they find a look that they feel confident and totally excited about. We stock everything from the traditional tiara & side tiaras to diamanté hair slides, pretty pearl combs, hair vines, veils, shoes, jewellery and even garters.  Our collection is always changing and we don’t like to sell more than two of the same accessory, which makes our brides look totally unique.

.

All our veils are hand made so we can change the designs and embellishments to compliment any gown.

.

.

Where are you located?

.

Our boutique is really easy to find and is situated at 2 Eastgate, Barnsley, South Yorkshire. We are in the town centre located only a five minute walk from the travel interchange, or if you are travelling by car we are a ten minute drive from Junction 37 off the M1. We can also direct you to the free car park that is available on weekends and evenings.

.

Can you give Brides Up North an idea on price?

.

Our made to order gowns are priced from £695 – £2,400 and we also have our designer discontinued collection that starts from just £99 – £599, these gowns are available to buy off the peg, making them ideal for last minute weddings or limited budgets.

.

.

Do Brides Up North need an appointment?

.

Yes, we work by appointment only as we feel that choosing your bridal gown needs not only our expert advice and one to one personal attention, but also total privacy which means that when you book an appointment with us, there are no other brides present and you have the exclusive and sole use of our boutique making your visit to us comfortable and stress free.  Whether you are spending £99 or £1,999 you will receive the very same high standards of our award winning customer service and professional advice that you truly deserve.

.

.

What can Brides Up North expect when they come in for an appointment?

.

To be totally and utterly spoilt! We love our gowns and we love our brides and we would never, ever sell a gown to a bride if it didn’t suit them. Our award winning reputation walks down the aisle with every one of our brides, which is why we have created an oasis of calm in luxurious surroundings. We allow two hours for your first appointment with a comfortable seating area for your mum and/or best friend who we also love to spoil! At Elegance we guarantee you will have a truly memorable and enjoyable bridal experience that you will treasure forever and we always get the bubbly out to celebrate when ‘the one’ has been discovered as well as providing FREE Wedding Dress Insurance with every gown sold.

.

.

Jean Fox Wedding Dresses at Elegance Bridal Studio   Jean Fox Wedding Dresses at Elegance Bridal Studio

Wedding gowns by Jean Fox

.

.

What is your current favourite gown that you stock and why?

.

Looking around our collection there isn’t one gown that I can say is my one favourite, I love them all and brides always comment on what a varied and beautiful collection we have.  They often pick so many to try on, which proves that we know what brides are looking for.

.

.

Is there a particular style of dress that is popular with your brides at the moment?

.

No, we attract such a varied range of bride from all age ranges, expectations and walks of life that we don’t have a particular style that everyone is choosing and we are always updating our collection with new styles, however we have sold a few more lace gowns since the Royal Wedding.

.

.

How does Elegance Bridal Studio provide a superior experience to other wedding dress boutiques?

.

When you visit Elegance Bridal Studio you will discover the most beautiful gowns in the world whilst experiencing our famous award winning northern hospitality. I am a total perfectionist and our standards are very high which acts as a guarantee to any future brides that we are the best and you will look amazing.

.

We have a few business awards under our belt for providing a service of excellence that are all proudly on display, giving brides total confidence when placing the dress of their dreams safely in our hands.

.

We also offer an in-house alteration service by our highly skilled seamstress who can make bridesmaid dresses and mother of the bride outfits. A bridal dressing service is offered as an optional extra: we will dress the bride and her maids on her wedding day to ensure total perfection. We also offer a gown cleaning and preservation service, so after the wedding day brides can leave their gown with us and when they return from their honeymoon, their gown will be cleaned and packed within a beautiful wedding dress box that can be treasured forever.

.

.

Do you stock Bridesmaid Dresses?

.

We don’t sell an off the peg collection of bridesmaid dresses, but our seamstress can make bridesmaid dresses to order which is proving to be a very popular service.

.

.

What about Menswear?

.

Our menswear department Sensational Formal Hire is located within the same building and is totally separate from our boutique, so that the groom can have the same one to one service by appointment only within an all male environment. Sensational Formal Hire is owned and operated by my husband John Carr and you will find suits to hire by the award winning Cameron Ross whilst also a range of suits to buy is also available. Sensational Formal Hire have just won a National Award ‘Best Wedding Menswear Supplier’ in the 2012 Wedding Industry Awards, which is an award that we are all totally proud of and is a cast iron guarantee of our high standards and of course the award winning customer service that every customer receives.

.

Sensational Formal Hire

.

.

Are you married?

.

We were married on the 1st June 2006 in Cyprus.  I wore an a-line angel satin gown with a very long train in a light gold colour which looked fantastic on our beach photos.   John didn’t have his business then so he wore some linen trousers with a white shirt, waistcoat & scrunchie tie. We are planning to re-new our vows in a few years time and I cannot wait to choose another gown from our fabulous collection!

.

.

Wedding Blog Fashion Exclusive! Gorgeous Gowns By UK Wedding Dress Designer Eliza Wyke Couture

August 6th, 2012 | Julia Braime

Eliza Wyke Couture Wedding Gowns by Nicky Chadwick Photography

.

.

This afternoon’s post is a bit of a show off.  In the nicest possible way.

.

Today, I get to showcase the work of not one, but many fabulous Northern suppliers with this beautiful bridal fashion shoot sent to me by Featured Supplier Richard Wynn Davies and Nicky Chadwick Photography.  As well as showing off the skills of these two fine Yorkshire wedding photographers, we also get to lust after the gorgeous gowns of UK wedding dress designer Eliza Wyke Couture and the beautiful grounds of The Coniston Hotel in the Yorkshire Dales.

.

Let the parade begin!  And take down my order for that sequinned gown.  In pink please.

Nicky says:  This shoot was conceived to showcase Eliza Wyke Couture’s amazing dress designs. After lots of discussions with Elizabeth from Eliza Wyke it was decided that with quite a few different dresses to shoot we needed a stunning venue to show them off as well as the help of a great team of people. The very talented Richard Wynn-Davies and his gorgeous better half Caroline agreed to come on board to help with the shooting and suggested we use the very lovely Coniston Hotel with it’s gorgeous hall and lake. Fortunately the hotel agreed and their team were very helpful throughout the day enabling us to get some fantastic shots.

Richard says: Caroline and I shot our first two Coniston weddings last month and really loved the place. From the quaint little village church to the impressive lake, beautiful old hall and fine formal gardens. Many of the wedding drinks receptions are held in the hall and the family that own it are very hands on. Mrs Bannister helps serve the drinks and is so lovely.  We decided it was the perfect location for an inspiration shoot to support the venue with imagery and showcase some of Elizabeth’s dresses and we decided to combine the classic, refined country look with a fashion twist.

The Coniston Hotel say: The Coniston Hotel is a wedding venue unlike any other, a venue where
friendly, personal service comes naturally. Nestling in 1400 acres of stunning Yorkshire Dales scenery, the estate is one of the most romantic settings imaginable; a perfect place for a perfect wedding. Yet the location is only part of the story. As we only ever hold one wedding or civil partnership per day, you’re guaranteed to be the focus of our attention, with delicious food, spectacular surroundings and a true Yorkshire welcome waiting for every one of your guests.
