what a beauty. our real life bride & celebrity columnist jane prepares to get glam

July 29th, 2015 | Rachel Parry

Jane Witherspoon (4)

Last time we caught up with Jane Witherspoon, our real life bride & celebrity columnist, she’d been thinking about how to impress guests with her flower, food and entertainment choices for her upcoming wedding while getting some top tips from newlywed wed actress Michelle Keegan.

Fast-forward a month and Jane’s thoughts have turned to her own appearance on the big day, and in particular what style of hair and makeup she might have for her moment in the spotlight.

Luckily Jane’s job as a celebrity reporter has once again put her in touch with an A-lister (of the beauty world) who can help. Hair and makeup artist to the rich and famous Ciona Johnson-King, whose clients include Cameron Diaz and Keira Knitghley, has styled Jane on many occasions for glittering events at which she has been reporting.

So as her wedding day approaches, Jane has called upon Ciona to give her some expert advice on her bridal beauty regime. And rather than keeping it all to herself, the generous bride-to-be is sharing all the details with you here on the blog today. What a star!

Jane Witherspoon (5)

jane says: It’s hard to keep on top of a good beauty regime at the best of times let alone when you’re finalising plans for a wedding. I’m not doing too well at trying to eat healthier and drink lots of water. In fact, the busier I get the more I seem to consume! And as for this growing my hair malarkey, generally I’m feeling a bit of a mess. I’m sure it will all be worth it come October though.

For the big day itself, I’m thinking of eeping my hair and makeup quite simple and classic, inspired by Princess Grace of Monaco.

Luckily when it comes to bridal beauty I’ve got a trump card in the form of Ciona Johnson-King. Ciona is the make-up artist to the stars and I’m so lucky and proud to be able to call her my friend. Cameron Diaz, Audrey Tautou, Liv Tyler, Gwyneth Paltorw and Keira Knightley are just a few of the names she’s worked with.

Jane Witherspoon (3)

With this in mind I’m handing over this month’s blog post to Cio to give you some amazing pre-wedding beauty tips, and accompanying the post are some of my favourite Ciona creations – now what style to choose?

ciona says: If you’re reading this, the chances are you or someone dear to you is about to get married. Congratulations! It’s the most magical day of your life. I thoroughly recommend it! To help you prepare, here are few of my top wedding tips…

1. Practice beforehand, using daylight when available. Your hairstyle needs to work from the sides and back as well as the front. Make sure your skin tone is the same from the face to all body parts. It’s important to be completely comfortable on the big day so don’t go too far out of your comfort zone with your hair and makeup. It’s not the time to try the latest catwalk trend. Take photos from different angles so you can see how your hair and makeup will look.

2. Take care sunbathing in the run up to the wedding as suntan marks are very tricky to disguise. If fake tanning, build up light layers over a few days or weeks rather than going for a strong spray tan just before your wedding. Find the brand and level of tan that works best on your skin well in advance. It’s all part of the research!

3. Gently exfoliating the skin really does help with radiance. This is the time to treat yourself to some good serum and moisturiser to nourish the skin too.

4. Eat healthily, drink water, exercise, sleep well and avoid stress. Basically -look after yourself!

5. On the day, allocate plenty of preparation time. Listen to your favourite playlist to help relax you. I usually ask the bride’s best friend to help keep our zone free of too many interruptions. You’d be surprised how many people pop in to say ‘hi’! The last thing you want is someone bringing in their last minute drama whilst the bride’s getting ready. Don’t forget to eat either, as fainting at the aisle isn’t a good look (as a make-up artist, I’m likely to be the one force-feeding the bride).

Here Ciona shares three of her beauty videos to help brides-to-be achieve that perfect wedding day look: Golden, Hollywood and Romantic.

"China: Through The Looking Glass" Costume Institute Benefit Gala - Arrivals

If there’s one event where female celebrities raise the style stakes it’s the met gala. Primarily the annual event is held to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York, though the glitzy bash also gives top celebs and designers the opportunity to team-up and create some show-stopping red carpet looks.

Each year’s gala celebrates the theme of that year’s Costume Institute exhibition making the dress code for 2015 ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’. However, to us the theme may as well of been ‘bare all’ as that’s what many of the female A-listers decided to do.

Make no mistake, sheer gowns were big news at the event with bootylicious ladies Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez entering into some kind of flesh-off. While were very impressed with the bravery of all involved, for us it was Queen Bey who ran the red carpet.

And so today we’re putting the Love on Top singer in our celebrity spy spotlight to see how fierce and fashionable brides-to-be can take inspiration from Beyonce’s glittering getup, slick hair and pretty makeup.

Girls, you’re going to be crazy in love for this one!

the dress

Beyonce Dress EDITED

What there was of Beyonce’s dress was custom made by Givenchy and left very little to the imagination. In fact her modesty was only covered with strategically placed sparkling gems – similar to the look she adopted for her Dangerously in Love album cover, way back in 2003. The girl’s still got it though and even if a few people lost their breath when she stepped out on the red carpet, there’s no denying she worked the bold look incredibly well.

We realise that this exact look would be wholly inappropriate for a traditional church wedding, or many other styles of ceremonies for that matter, but there are certain elements of Beyonce’s style that ladies can steal to add some attitude to their attire.

The majority of the sheer wedding gowns that we’ve seen on the bridal catwalks thankfully offer more coverage than Miss Knowles’ gown – with full length nude underlays and carefully embroidered panels hinting at nudity rather than actually revealing it. There are of course more daring dresses with embellishment or delicate 3D flowers covering just the area between the bust and the bum.

More conservative creations give brides the option of a design with just one or two sheer elements, such as the sleeves, back or side panels of the dress, so they can choose which areas of their body they feel most confident flaunting (as well as what’s deemed appropriate). Alternatively for brides that want to remain under wraps there’s the option of a gown with a sheer lace overlay or jacket that will give a translucent look but without the need to flash any flesh that you’d rather your parents, in-laws and the vicar didn’t see.

And as if she needed to reveal anymore, Beyonce’s dress did also feature sexy cut out back detail, which is an easy feature for brides to mirror.

the hair

Ponytails are growing in popularity, particularly with brides looking for a simple up do that will last the day, and the test of time. That said, the majority are keeping their hair ties a little lower than Beyonce who chose to pile her hair high, presumably not to distract from the dress.

Brides in favour of the high ponytail can choose whether to keep the look sleek and straight, undone and messy or classy and curly, like Miss Knowles. Meanwhile if you like the idea of high up hair but want something a little more exciting for your big day, further options include the top knot, ballerina bun, sophisticated chignon or an intricate twisted do.

In terms of accessories most ladies tend to keep the look quite simple opting for a cute girly bow or blousy floral corsage hair slide. Locks scraped away from the face also gives brides the opportunity to rock some elaborate earrings such as sparkling chandelier styles.

the makeup

Once again, not to detract from the gown, Beyonce kept her makeup fairly simple opting for classic rosy cheeks and lips.

Her eyes were the main focal point which featured a mint green hue on the lids to pick out the stunning colours of the gems sprinkled across the dress. To open up the eyes just a flick of liner was used on the top eye line, adding a sexy edge, while the bottom was left bare – much like the rest of Bey’s body.

Lashings of mascara and perfectly sculptured brows completed the look which is certainly one brides could adopt for their moment in the limelight.

Let’s meet the lady behind the magic!

.

What is your background?

.

I have been a make up artist and skin care therapist for 15 years! I wanted to offer a quality service to customers with quality products! I qualified as a beauty therapist first and then went more into make up artistry about six years ago! Since qualifying all those years ago I have completed nearly 80 other courses in beauty therapy and make up. I believe you can never have enough knowledge.
.

.

How did Black and Mixed Skin.com begin?
.
I started the business because I was finding it really difficult to get quality brands for darker skins. I started to visit the Beauty Shows in America and found that there was so much more on offer. It was a slow process to start it up because I wanted to try and test every single product to give it my seal of approval.
.

.

What are your top three bridal makeup tips?
.

Use a primer to fix the foundation in place
.

Colour your lips in with a matching lip pencil before applying lipstick or gloss so that colour is still there if it comes off.

.
Use a creamy concealer for a softer, more natural look on blemishes.

.

.

What are your top three bridal makeup no-nos?
.

Avoid lip gloss if you’re wearing your hair down on a windy day. Hair will stick to lips.
.

Don’t apply too much shimmer to eyelids it appears as white dots in photographs.

.

Too much bronzer can give your skin a dirty look if its orange based.

.

.
Which of your makeup products would you say are must-haves for a bride on her wedding day and why?

.

Youngblood Mineral primer. It’s a great product and lets skin breathe. It evens out the skin and helps foundation to last longer.
.
Blinc Mascara. Once applied, the tubes bind to your lashes and cannot run, smudge, clump or flake, even if you cry or rub your eyes.

.
Youngblood Brow Artiste to get the perfect eyebrows. Eyebrows frame your face and define the eyes.

Which of your hair products is a must have for a bride on her wedding day and why?
.

.

Do you sell any pamper products to help a bride relax before her big day?  Which would you particularly recommend and why?
.

Yes the bath soak by AmaZene is to die for! It smells great and always makes me fell relaxed.

.

AmaZene Dermalogica

.

.

Dermalogica Stress Relief Treatment Oil is another must have. Great for massage, as a relaxing bath oil or mixing in with your body lotion.
