Springtime is the perfect season to update your makeup look, ditching darker, wintery palettes for a fresher, radiant finish that’s all about enhancing your natural beauty with minimal fuss.

Spring beauty needn’t be boring though – there are plenty of ways to get playful with your makeup this season and inject pops of colour into your day-to-day beauty regime. Who said that bright colours – or even a touch of sparkle – were just for going ‘out out’ with the girls? You may even want to borrow some of this season’s most coveted looks for an on-trend stylish twist to your big day.

Lucky for you, we’ve rounded up the top beauty looks we’re currently crushing on here at Brides Up North that you simply must get acquainted with. We’ve even handpicked a selection of go-to products to help you nail these trends, so what exactly are you waiting for?

glitter

Outshine other brides this spring season by adding some gorge sparkle to your bridal day makeup look, as seen on the spring runways of Anna Sui, Alberta Ferretti and Stella Jean. We’re talking highly pigmented metallic eyelids or a delicate smudge of shimmery shadow on the inner circles of your eyes, sure to brighten up your complexion in an instant. For a truly sultry sparkle, you can’t go wrong with Violet Voss Super Sparkles – these dinky pots come in a variety of colours, including nude copper and even white champagne gold.

cherry lips

Spring is all about those bloomin’ lovely colour palettes and we simply can’t get enough of dreamy pastel shades for a sweet, barely there natural look. But for something a little more intense on the colour spectrum, we think you’re going to be coveting some rather luscious cherry shades this spring, which contrast perfectly with a fresh, dewy complexion. We love Clinique’s Pop Lip Colour + Primer which, as luck would have it, comes in a Cherry Pop shade and glides on with a velvety finish, moisturising lips for up to 8 hours to boot.

mermaid eyes

If you’re so over unicorns and pineapples already, then let us introduce you to an all-new trend to obsess over in 2018, spotted on the runways at Fendi and Tadashi Shoji – gals, it’s time to make a splash with mermaid vibes. The mermaid makeup look is all about bright and beautiful eyes, think ocean blue and exotic green tones – from turquoise and coral to aquamarine and every shade in between. One of our favourites is Stila’s Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow in emerald with its cream-to-powder texture and intense wash of colour.

gold highlighter

According to top beauty editors, bloggers and A-listers, gold highlighter is a must-have addition to your makeup bag this season. This is an ultra flattering hue that leaves your skin with a glossy complexion. Charlotte Tilbury’s Bar of Gold is something of a cult classic in this department, promising to sculpt your cheekbones to perfection thanks to the highlighter’s light-reflecting ingredients and delicate formula.

ask the experts: lipstick & curls

March 9th, 2018 | Julia Braime

Christmas Wedding Inspiration - Amore Star Events and Charlotte Munro

There’s no one style suits all when it comes to a bride’s big day look – rather than fitting the bridal mould, we love nothing more than to see ladies reflecting their own individual styles, not only through their dress choice, but their hair and makeup too.

Whether vintage pin curls, a Hollywood red lip or winged liner to rival past-icon Amy Winehouse is your thing, you should be able to rock it every day – and that includes your wedding day. That said though, we all know the pressure of trying to perfect your look for an occasion that matters (cue pre-wedding melt-down) and so we highly advise leaving the task to the pros.

Our fabulous Sponsor Lipstick & Curls – “the hair and beauty experts” – have experienced stylists located across the country who can create looks from all across the decades – retro to modern day – and so are certainly well placed to help you brides and your #girlsquad get your glam on.

Today we’re catching up with the director and head stylist of Lipstick & Curls, Amanda Moorhouse, to find out more about their fantastic services, as well as to learn more about the latest bridal hair and makeup looks, and must-have products!

And if you like what you see here ladies, you will be excited to learn that the lovely Lipstick & Curls team is offering our readers 10% off their prices until the end of April 2018 – just mention Brides Up North when enquiring.

Now, let’s get down to beauty business…

Lipstick & Curls (1)

Can you give us a brief overview of Lipstick & Curls and the services that you offer?

amanda says: Lipstick & Curls is a unique agency of hair and makeup artists providing services across the UK. All our artists have been hand-picked to represent what we feel is the best in the business! We understand the needs of our customers and work with them closely to create a style that reflects both their image and personal style whilst working with their theme or brief. Bookings include bridal groups, parties and hen parties, cooperate events, fashion shoots and TV, music and media clients.

How many stylist are on the team and what areas do they cover?

We have grown to include more than 100 artists now covering all the main cities in the UK, Scotland, Wales, London, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Liverpool, Oxford, Bristol, Birmingham, Nottingham, Sheffield, Hull, Brighton, Devon … and many more! We will always assign the closest artist to the location and they will make the journey to the client on the day.

Lipstick & Curls (9)

Why would you recommend a bride hires in a professional to do their makeup rather than doing it themselves?

Hair and makeup plays an important part in how you look and feel on your wedding day and we want to be part of the process. We know how important your appearance is on this special day. Our artists have years of experience working with brides and their families. They are the experts and the bride can relax on the day knowing that she is in safe hands. Additional services we provide include, eye lash extension, hair extension, airbrushing, manicure.

Can you tell us about your Deluxe Wedding Package and what it includes?

Lipstick & Curls have teamed up with some fabulous partners to offer our customers more than our award winning bridal hair and makeup services. Deluxe Classics provide beautiful classic cars, from the heyday of American motoring that offer the perfect opportunity to travel in style and arrive with an added dash of glamour on your wedding day. Hanson & Jeni of Mid Century Weddings are two of the finest vintage style photographers with 15-year experience and are internationally published, in fashion magazines and several vintage themed books. With their experience and wonderful eye for detail they will capture your beautiful day forever. Together we present a package of timeless style and sophistication to complement your day, adding a little bit of magic from the golden era. There are discounts available for booking two or all three of these services. Please email us at info@lipstickandcurls.net to discuss your requirements.

Lipstick & Curls (1)

You also offer Hen Party packages, can you tell us what these entail?

Our hen parties are always very popular as ladies always love to be pampered! We provide a wide range of services to suit the group and theme of the event; from the Classic Mini Makeover to a more Deluxe service providing both hair and makeup. Our artists have experience and skills in many areas and can provide vintage hair and makeup from all the decades, character hair and makeup, and pamper services, including hair styling, blow drying, makeovers, manicure, massage, facial and pedicures. We cater for groups of all sizes and have various packages to suit most budgets.

Lipstick & Curls (1)

What makeup looks are proving popular with brides at the moment?

I think the bold lip is here to stay for a while! Nothing looks more wonderful than glowing healthy skin, neutral eyes (with lots of lashes of course) and a deep, bold lippy! We have seen some really daring plums and reds and even fuchsias on our brides over the last few months and they look so good with the contrast of the white ivory gown. Brightening up the whole face and even making the teeth and eyes look whiter!

Similarly, what hair styles are proving popular with brides?

I think the most popular style right now is the soft messy bun. We often add extra hair to provide even more texture and shape. This style looks great when curled and then loosely pined. A favorite of my brides is to unpin the hair at the end of the day so they have a different, even softer look for the evening!

all wrapped up: festive beauty

December 13th, 2017 | Alexis Forsyth

The festive season is upon us, and that can only mean one thing – it’s time to p-a-r-t-y!!

If you’re anything like us, you will have already purchased your festive threads during a frenzied online clothing splurge prompted by the Black Friday sales. So, with our party attire now sitting pretty in our wardrobes, we thought now a good time to focus on fitting makeup for the Christmas and New Year season.

This is probably the one time of the year when we can muster up the confidence to be more daring with our beauty look and go all-out glam, experimenting with those top beauty blogger trends we’ve been secretly crushing on over the past few months.

Ultra-glam makeup isn’t just for Christmas though…it’s also perfect for winter weddings! And so today on the blog, we’re sharing a few of our favourites that are ideal for brides who wants to inject some festive flair into their big day look.

Urban Decay smoky Chanel Rouge Allure

smoky eyes

Who doesn’t love a smoky eye? It’s an uber-flattering beauty trend, whether you go for a pristine finish with plenty of definition or for a much softer ‘I just woke up like this’ smudged look. Instead of black, try charcoal grey, mauve or even taupe for a more natural look. Our top pick? Urban Decay’s Naked Smoky Palette has got all the essentials you need to nail this look in one handy kit, with a sultry mix of gorgeous matte, satin and sparkly shades to choose from.

black eyeliner

It’s one trend that never goes out of fashion – the classic winged eyeliner. In the winter months, dare to go bold with your liner and pair your angled flick with copper, plum or teal for all-out drama. For peepers with impact – stick with a classic black hue, or for something more understated, go for grey or brown. Bobbi Brown’s Long-wear Gel Eyeliner hasn’t won countless awards for nothing and comes in a dinky little pot, offering the precision of a liquid liner with the effortlessness of a gel-based formula. Simply draw on with a fine brush for a budge- and smudge-free heavy line.

glossy lids

If getting your sparkle on seems too much like an unwanted throwback to your 18-year-old self, then the high shine and glossy route is a more demure, grown-up approach to your festive makeup. Fresh and dewy – glossy eyelids work beautifully with lashings of black mascara and eyeliner for a tres simple yet sophisticated look. Our go-to product for some glossy action is the YSL Eye Gloss Smudger, which is applied as a top coat over your eyeshadow of choice for a high shine, polished finish.

pink blush

In the summer, we all like to channel the bronzed goddess look, but come winter, it’s time for our natural skin tones to take centre stage. Pale skin with pops of colourful makeup contrasts beautifully with a dark and wintery backdrop. We say, embrace your inner Snow White and keep your complexion fair, with a subtle flush of colour to your face. Our top pick is Illamasqua’s Cream Blusher in Laid, swept across the apples of your cheeks for a highly pigmented yet natural rosy-pink glow.

what a beauty. our real life bride & celebrity columnist jane prepares to get glam

July 29th, 2015 | Rachel Parry

Jane Witherspoon (4)

Last time we caught up with Jane Witherspoon, our real life bride & celebrity columnist, she’d been thinking about how to impress guests with her flower, food and entertainment choices for her upcoming wedding while getting some top tips from newlywed wed actress Michelle Keegan.

Fast-forward a month and Jane’s thoughts have turned to her own appearance on the big day, and in particular what style of hair and makeup she might have for her moment in the spotlight.

Luckily Jane’s job as a celebrity reporter has once again put her in touch with an A-lister (of the beauty world) who can help. Hair and makeup artist to the rich and famous Ciona Johnson-King, whose clients include Cameron Diaz and Keira Knitghley, has styled Jane on many occasions for glittering events at which she has been reporting.

So as her wedding day approaches, Jane has called upon Ciona to give her some expert advice on her bridal beauty regime. And rather than keeping it all to herself, the generous bride-to-be is sharing all the details with you here on the blog today. What a star!

Jane Witherspoon (5)

jane says: It’s hard to keep on top of a good beauty regime at the best of times let alone when you’re finalising plans for a wedding. I’m not doing too well at trying to eat healthier and drink lots of water. In fact, the busier I get the more I seem to consume! And as for this growing my hair malarkey, generally I’m feeling a bit of a mess. I’m sure it will all be worth it come October though.

For the big day itself, I’m thinking of eeping my hair and makeup quite simple and classic, inspired by Princess Grace of Monaco.

Luckily when it comes to bridal beauty I’ve got a trump card in the form of Ciona Johnson-King. Ciona is the make-up artist to the stars and I’m so lucky and proud to be able to call her my friend. Cameron Diaz, Audrey Tautou, Liv Tyler, Gwyneth Paltorw and Keira Knightley are just a few of the names she’s worked with.

Jane Witherspoon (3)

With this in mind I’m handing over this month’s blog post to Cio to give you some amazing pre-wedding beauty tips, and accompanying the post are some of my favourite Ciona creations – now what style to choose?

ciona says: If you’re reading this, the chances are you or someone dear to you is about to get married. Congratulations! It’s the most magical day of your life. I thoroughly recommend it! To help you prepare, here are few of my top wedding tips…

1. Practice beforehand, using daylight when available. Your hairstyle needs to work from the sides and back as well as the front. Make sure your skin tone is the same from the face to all body parts. It’s important to be completely comfortable on the big day so don’t go too far out of your comfort zone with your hair and makeup. It’s not the time to try the latest catwalk trend. Take photos from different angles so you can see how your hair and makeup will look.

2. Take care sunbathing in the run up to the wedding as suntan marks are very tricky to disguise. If fake tanning, build up light layers over a few days or weeks rather than going for a strong spray tan just before your wedding. Find the brand and level of tan that works best on your skin well in advance. It’s all part of the research!

3. Gently exfoliating the skin really does help with radiance. This is the time to treat yourself to some good serum and moisturiser to nourish the skin too.

4. Eat healthily, drink water, exercise, sleep well and avoid stress. Basically -look after yourself!

5. On the day, allocate plenty of preparation time. Listen to your favourite playlist to help relax you. I usually ask the bride’s best friend to help keep our zone free of too many interruptions. You’d be surprised how many people pop in to say ‘hi’! The last thing you want is someone bringing in their last minute drama whilst the bride’s getting ready. Don’t forget to eat either, as fainting at the aisle isn’t a good look (as a make-up artist, I’m likely to be the one force-feeding the bride).

Here Ciona shares three of her beauty videos to help brides-to-be achieve that perfect wedding day look: Golden, Hollywood and Romantic.

Next month Jane will be bringing us all the gossip from her hen do. She and the gals are off to a friend’s 18th Century farmhouse in France. Sounds fabulous!

February 13th, 2011 | Julia Braime

Joyce’s website is particularly useful if you are a reader with black skin or a mixed skin tone looking for quality products at affordable prices, although Black and Mixed Skin.com caters for ALL skin tones.

Let’s meet the lady behind the magic!

.

What is your background?

.

I have been a make up artist and skin care therapist for 15 years! I wanted to offer a quality service to customers with quality products! I qualified as a beauty therapist first and then went more into make up artistry about six years ago! Since qualifying all those years ago I have completed nearly 80 other courses in beauty therapy and make up. I believe you can never have enough knowledge.
.

.

How did Black and Mixed Skin.com begin?
.
I started the business because I was finding it really difficult to get quality brands for darker skins. I started to visit the Beauty Shows in America and found that there was so much more on offer. It was a slow process to start it up because I wanted to try and test every single product to give it my seal of approval.
.

.

What are your top three bridal makeup tips?
.

Use a primer to fix the foundation in place
.

Colour your lips in with a matching lip pencil before applying lipstick or gloss so that colour is still there if it comes off.

.
Use a creamy concealer for a softer, more natural look on blemishes.

.

.

What are your top three bridal makeup no-nos?
.

Avoid lip gloss if you’re wearing your hair down on a windy day. Hair will stick to lips.
.

Don’t apply too much shimmer to eyelids it appears as white dots in photographs.

.

Too much bronzer can give your skin a dirty look if its orange based.

.

.
Which of your makeup products would you say are must-haves for a bride on her wedding day and why?

.

Youngblood Mineral primer. It’s a great product and lets skin breathe. It evens out the skin and helps foundation to last longer.
.
Blinc Mascara. Once applied, the tubes bind to your lashes and cannot run, smudge, clump or flake, even if you cry or rub your eyes.

.
Youngblood Brow Artiste to get the perfect eyebrows. Eyebrows frame your face and define the eyes.
.

.

Youngblood Brow ArtisteYoungblood Mineral Primer

.

.

Which of your hair products is a must have for a bride on her wedding day and why?
.

Mixed Chicks Hair Silk. It gives shine and smoothes curly or straight hair!
.

.

Do you sell any pamper products to help a bride relax before her big day?  Which would you particularly recommend and why?
.

Yes the bath soak by AmaZene is to die for! It smells great and always makes me fell relaxed.

.

.

AmaZene Dermalogica

.

.

Dermalogica Stress Relief Treatment Oil is another must have. Great for massage, as a relaxing bath oil or mixing in with your body lotion.

.

.
