razzle dazzle ’em. pronovias for a vintage wedding at the grand hotel, york – charlotte & matthew

With the warm weather set to last into the weekend (yessssssssssss!), we’re dusting down the barbecue and putting the prosecco on chill, but before we head off to find a sunny beer garden for the obligatory Friday after-work drinks, we’re leaving you with this diamond of a real wedding!

Transporting us to the 50s – a magical era of Hollywood glamour and jukebox easy listening, jazz and swing – bride Charlotte had her heart set on a glitzy style wedding of this bygone time from the very beginning, and her vision determined everything; from the choice of venue (opulent York hotel The Grand) to the striking black and gold colour-scheme.

Charlotte initially thought her dress would be subtle and slinky, but one look at the beaded bodice of this (Brides Up North headline sponsor, dontcha know?) Pronovias beauty and it was love at first sight. And what a dress it was – delicate pearls, ornate beading and tulle, tulle, tulle for days. The father of the bride’s reaction – tearful, in the best possible way – says it all.

[jennaope]charlotte says: We got engaged in October 2016 while in Dubai. Matthew had arranged for us to stay in a room overlooking the Burj Al Arab. On our first night I came out of the bathroom to a bedroom in darkness other than a small light reflecting onto a beautiful diamond ring and two glasses of champagne next to it. It was so magical – the light was reflecting off the ring and all around the room! He then finally popped the question and we burst into tears of joy. It was a moment we’ll remember forever.

Our wedding was on 30th September 2017, as we wanted to get married fairly quickly. We’d been together nearly seven years by the time we were engaged!

I’d always wanted a vintage glamour themed wedding – I love anything glitzy and Rat Pack-related – so we needed a venue to match. The Grand Hotel & Spa in York, was the perfect choice for us: it was quickly apparent that venue was very glamorous and opulent but also so central for everyone – we also lived only five minutes away, which was particularly handy!

In keeping with the theme, our colour scheme was black and gold. This worked pretty perfectly with our venue as the room had gold curtains and chandeliers.

I’d always sworn I’d be wearing a simple, slimline dress on my wedding day but I (rather unexpectedly) fell in love with a very big princess-style dress! My Pronovias gown was strapless and had a fully beaded bodice, adding some real 50s glamour. It was the second dress I tried and I knew straight away I loved it. Bridal Rogue Gallery in York, where I found the dress were great at every stage of the process.

We bought Matthew, the best man and our dads a simple black suit, white shirt, champagne-coloured waistcoat and a gold tie from Dobell – we needed a style to fit all heights (and widths)!

For our transport, we borrowed my dad’s black Mercedes and dressed it with gold ribbon, staying true to the colour scheme.

Happy Feet! A Real Wedding, Anna and Paul

October 6th, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

My, my, I’m spoiling you today.  Here is one fabulous Real Wedding submission from Mr Nathan Combes of, you guessed it, Nathan Combes Photography.  Did you know that Nathan has recently been accepted into the Wedding Photojournalists Association?  That’s a pretty prestigious accolade and no mean feat.  Go Northern Talent!  So they think his work is amazing, I think his work is amazing and today’s couple, Paul and Anna, think his work is amazing.

.

Let’s see if you agree as we talk to this cool chick all about her big day.

.

{Side note: OMG I HEART her shoes!  Want.}

Anna says:  Paul proposed at the Louvre in Paris, and we got married on 28th April 2011 at Bedern Hall in York.  We chose the venue because is was quite intimate but could also fit all the friends and family we wanted to invite. We also like to feel of the building compared to say, a hotel.

.

The only theme was in the colours which were pink (the choice of 7 year old Ella, Paul’s daughter) silver and black.

I chose a halter neck dress by Benjamin Roberts from Elizabeth of York and teamed it with some pink dancing shoes from Hobbs

My flower girl’s pink dress with rose details was a bit of a bargain from Tesco!  We went more upmarket with the older girls! Two bridesmaid wore hot pink dresses from Ted Baker in a 50’s prom style cut with a black sash and my other bridesmaid wore a black dress from TK Maxx again in a 50’s prom style cut with a hot pink sash – and more importantly a pair of Iron Fist shoes which were black and silver with a pink heel.

I carried a bouquet of pink and ivory roses with black sparkly pins from Fulford Flowers, who also did the buttonholes, and arrived in style in a white Limo with hot pink ribbons with my  four bridesmaids, mum and dad.

Leafy Catwalk, A Styled Shoot – Chris Milner Photography

May 26th, 2011 | Julia Braime

Brides Up North Featured Supplier and fabulous photographer Chris Milner Photography, shared this gorgeous bridal fashion styled shoot with me recently and I couldn’t help but show it off on the blog.  Oh for a waist that small!

.

.

Chris Milner Photography

.

.

Chris says:  I had a fantastic bridal fashion shoot with the beautiful York model Caroline Duffy. I chose to shoot again at Strensall Common, a few miles north of York. I really love shooting here (my third time this year!) as it just looks so different each time I go there.

I tried to time this shoot to capture some autumnal colours, it’s just a pity that the sun had gone behind the clouds by the time we got there, but we were still able to create some amazing photos.

Summer Lovin’, A Real Wedding – Heidi & Rhys

January 11th, 2011 | Julia Braime

Fab photographer and Brides Up North Featured Supplier, Nicky Chadwick Photography sent me this lovely Real Wedding.  I love the bride’s funky, beautiful bridal ‘do.  This couple look like a lot of fun and so in love.  Enjoy…

.

Nicky tells us about photographing the Real Wedding: Heidi and Rhys were married on Friday 9th July 2010 and their ceremony and reception all took place at the gorgeous Hospitium in the Museum Gardens, York.

.

This venue is perfect for photographs with plenty of different options  to choose from, with the ruins, gorgeous landscape gardens, access to the river walks and also the building itself with stone pillars and
dark wood beams.
