halloween is here.

Is it just me, or did things suddenly get a little freaky around here?

I can’t resist a bit of Halloween mischief, especially when it’s executed as stylishly (and as eerily) as this gothic bridal shoot by Abi of Wooden Hill Images and her clever team.

Look out, she’s behind you…

Be honest, who checked?

Abi says: With a background in theatre and a passion for literature and transforming it into the visual, I wanted to be able to celebrate the change of season and create a Halloween ‘bride’.

My team researched the idea of a gothic bride and took influences from novels, listened to music and found a great location next to Lake Gormire at the bottom of Sutton Bank near Thirsk.

Brides and Belles supplied a wonderful dress from Victoria Kay Gowns which suited the brief and then we found the black velvet coat we wanted from gothic clothes supplier The Dark Angel.

We met on a day in October and our model Simona was transformed by Deborah from Love Hair and Beauty, who never fails but to understand what we ty to achieve and knows exactly how to create it.

Jane from Wedding and Events Floral Design had created wonderful bouquets and a head dress, collected fabrics and rabbit skulls, skilfully made a bustle for the back of the coat and finished off the detailing to the top hat.

It was a walk into the woods, with bags, boxes, a dog, wellies, umbrellas, smoke bombs and some cameras… and in a race against weather, we created!

It has to be noted that Bill the greyhound, despite shaking with nerves was a total professional.

Wuthering Heights. An Atmospheric Styled Vintage Bridal Shoot In Yorkshire

March 31st, 2014 | Julia Braime

Wooden Hill Images

I’m putting this feature together late on Mothering Sunday after a blissful day full of cuddles, friends, family, flowers, roast dinners and blackberry crumble.  Baby in bed and fire on, I’m curled up in a snug corner at my own Mum’s house with my laptop, and getting ready for the week ahead.

Sunday nights are usually reserved for a steaming bath and a good book, but busy schedules always call for a bit of a catch up and putting today’s post together has been just lovely.  These beautiful, creative images sent to me by friend of the wedding blog Abi from Wooden Hill Images are more like editorial art than your typical styled bridal shoot, and curating this selection has been like stepping into the pages of a Bronte favourite.

Enjoy.

Wuthering Heights from Sarah MacVean on Vimeo.

Wooden Hill Images

Abi says:  Since much of my work draws inspiration from literature, I decided for my annual bridal inspiration shoot to choose one of my favourite books, Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, a classic love story.

Wooden Hill Images

The aim was to inspire a bride to expand their ideas and be creative. I wanted to create a shoot that told a story that would do this and allow a viewer lose themselves in another world for a time, drawing loosely from the book to capture the essence of the character of Cathy and portray the eerie and yet quintessentially beautiful atmosphere.

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

I initially approached Jane from Wedding and Events Floral Design who immediately understood and loved the idea. Not long after Bex Brides, Love Hair and Beauty Boutique and MacVean Videography came on board and through the means of a highly useful Pinterest board everyone was able to gather exactly what the feel of the shoot would be…

The shoot was going to take place on a misty, atmospheric sunrise in the heart of the Yorkshire Moors but as the day approached we realised we had chosen the sunniest day of the year so far! So we abandoned until sunset, meaning there was no hurry with the hair and makeup – and we all got a lie in!

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

Love Hair & Beauty fulfilled the brief perfectly. Makeup for an English beauty with a beautiful weathered look, rosy cheeks and tumbling locks and unkempt styling.  Lindsey our model isn’t a professional model, as I like to ask ‘real women’ to model where I can and as soon as I saw her I knew she had exactly the look that we were after.

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

The outfit was actually a few different looks, Victoriana blouses, a hessian belt with a vintage cameo and the bespoke skirt which I made with a thousand pins, metres of different muslins and nets and Jane kindly stitched was testament that sometimes you can create something totally unique yet beautiful. The cape, again from Bex Brides brought the outfit alive, and I’m definitely hoping to see more brides with cloaks and capes!

For the brides out there reading this – a bride doesn’t always HAVE to wear a white dress!  Look to the past, draw influence from things that mean something to you, be individual.

A Sparkling Affair. An Intimate & Twinkling Real Wedding At Rudding Park, Harrogate – Sarah & Ed

January 24th, 2014 | Julia Braime

Wooden Hill Images

Todays small but twinkly real wedding is such a splendid affair – a stunning bride (don’t you just love her hair?), an ornate setting, perfect details and only the people there that really count.  And that last bit, that is what really counts, isn’t it?

Sarah and Ed’s wedding was shot by Abi at Wooden Hill Images, and I hope you love it as much as we do.

Wooden Hill Images

Sarah says:  We got engaged in May 2010 in Windsor Great Park in Berkshire, near where we lived at the time. It was overlooking a lake by a small bridge while out with our dog Poppy.

Wooden Hill Images

We were married at Bilton House, which is Harrogate Registry Office in North Yorkshire on 19th December 2013, and afterwards at Rudding Park Hotel.  We choose Rudding Park Hotel because we had previously stayed there for a weekend break and had a great time, and I am originally from North Yorkshire so it had the close to home feel.

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

We choose to have a small intimate wedding as we have two young children, Will (3 years) and Tom (1 year) who we wanted to be part of the day, with our immediate family and a few close friends.

Our theme was a 1920’s/30’s Great Gatsby/Downtown Wedding set against the backdrop of Christmas with a gold, ivory and a touch of subtle green colour scheme to blend into the 1920’s and Christmas colours.

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

I chose the Stephanie Allin Ingrid dress from the Jazz Age Collection from Anne Priscilla Bridal in Glasgow.  I was lucky enough that the designer of the dress I choose was in the shop in Glasgow when I was there and I ended up getting a personalised sketch of the dress!

My headpiece was by Jenny Packham, make up by Mel England and hair by Emily Hawkes

Wooden Hill Images

We didn’t have bridesmaids or groomsmen, but our boys wore a mix and match of cord and tweed suits, with little converse shoes to give a ‘cool kiddie’ finish.

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

I carried a bouquet of calla lilies from Wedding & Events reminiscent of the period.

Wooden Hill Images

Guests were collected from Rudding Park on at 1920’s vintage bus from a company called Yesteryear, and taken to and from the registry and Sarah travelled with William who walked her down the registry aisle.

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

For the pre dinner reception we had a harpist (Anita Aslan from Harping On) playing a mix of Christmas music and other songs appropriate for the occasion and a two piece 1920’s band called The Gershwin Gang for some music into the evening. Both entertainment choices were based on the small nature of the wedding with only 20 guests and 5 children and to keep the theme and fun running throughout the day.

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

The favours for Ladies were vintage chocolates from Betty’s and for the men, Scottish themed stag bottle openers, which combined Yorkshire and Scotland.

Ed is Scottish and us organising everything from our home in Perthshire meant it was important for us to blend everything across the colours and themes even though we hadn’t seen certain things first hand.

Wooden Hill Images

Alex at Simply Bows & Chair Covers dressed the venue to perfection!

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

We chose a fruit cake centre piece with a monogram with our initials from our invitations, then cupcakes with feathers and a sequin finish matching my dress.  The cake was by Homebaked Heaven

My favourite part of the day was arriving back to Rudding Park at dusk with all the twinkling lights, harp music and a mulled wine reception.

For our honeymoon we stayed an extra couple of nights at Rudding park ourselves and plan to return in 2014.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be don’t be afraid to do a small wedding, and you won’t have to compromise on quality.  Trust your suppliers to apply their own interpretation of your theme.

Congratulations Sarah & Ed!

Bluebells & Sparkle. A Real Engagement In North Yorkshire – Amy & Daniel

July 16th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

Wooden Hill Images

.

.

Is anyone still out there, or have you all knocked off early to go and sip Pimms in the park?  Well, despite the sunshine, some of us are still here and staying loyal to the cause – fuelling that Northern Revolution and bringing you a double daily dose of wedding inspiration, supplier showcases and lovely love stories.  It’s always sunny at Brides Up North.

.

This afternoon we join Amy, Dan, their two furry friends and photographer Abi of Wooden Hill Images for a sun dappled walk in the woods, as they share their engagement news.

.

Abi says:  How could anyone not be inspired by the seasons?  Late spring in the bluebell woods was a natural choice for Daniel and Amy who are marrying at Whinstone View, Great Ayton next May.

.

A gift from their parents, Amy and Daniel wanted natural shots and wished to take their dogs along too, so we all set off on a walk.  Daniel had admitted to being hesitant about having his picture taken, but by the end was really enjoying himself!  We went to Silston woods, near Northallerton, the most beautiful unspoilt walk with a carpet of velvety bluebells and dappled morning sunlight through the trees.

.

.

Wooden Hill Images

.

.

Wooden Hill Images

.

.

Amy says:  Daniel and I met in my hometown in North Yorkshire.  He was from Australia, visiting family and playing football and I was completing my A levels. We kind of always felt like it was meant to be, who knew that two people from opposite ends of the earth meet in this small town and that would be it?!

.

.

Wooden Hill Images

.

.

Wooden Hill Images

.

.

We got engaged September 22nd 2012. Daniel proposed to me on Estepona beach whilst we were on holiday in Spain. It was very sweet and romantic. We had been together for seven years and I was beginning to think it would never happen, so I was very excited when he asked and all I wanted to do was grab random people off the beach to show them my ring and share our news! He asked for my parents blessing beforehand which was so lovely and nobody else knew! He even picked out the perfect ring by himself. That evening we celebrated drinking beautiful champagne by the pool at our hotel, looking out over the mountains.

This engagement shoot was a surprise gift secretly organised by my parents and Abi! It is lovely to have engagement photos, especially in May, which is the month we will be tying the knot. After some discussion with Abi it was thought that the bluebells would look lovely at this time of year and we decided to do the shoot in a local wood which was filled with bluebells.

.

.

.

.

Wooden Hill Images

.

.

Wooden Hill Images

We really wanted to capture our lives at this moment in time and felt we should keep it casual so we just wore jeans and T.shirts. Our dogs, Indie & Ash are important to us and a big part of our life and so they came along with us, in fact I think they may have out shone us!

.

.

Wooden Hill Images

.

.

Wooden Hill Images

.

This engagement shoot was such a fantastic opportunity to work with Abi before our big day. Not only is she an amazing photographer, producing the most beautiful images but she is so friendly and calming, we had so much fun and we cannot wait for our wedding day!

Northern Lights! A Real Wedding In North Yorkshire – Hannah & Steven

March 25th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

Wooden Hill Images

.

.

Another cold Monday morning deserves a splash of something special, and this stunning Real Wedding sent to me by Abi of Wooden Hill Images and real bride Hannah reminds us that Winter can be beautiful as well as dreary!  From the traditional Christmas theme to the theatrical lighting effects and the bride’s gorgeous feathered cape, this wedding is packed with dramatic detail and atmosphere.

.

After all, if you are going to go for breath-taking , why not make it completely and utterly breath-taking!?

.

.

Wooden Hill Images

.

.

Wooden Hill Images

.

.

Hannah says:  We got engaged under an olive tree, in an olive grove in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco on 9th June 2012, and were married on 15th December 2012 at All Saints Church, Pickhill, then to Steven’s family farm for the reception in a marquee in the garden.

.

Wooden Hill Images

Wooden Hill Images

My dress was Augusta Jones ‘Syd’ from The Bridal Lounge in Northallerton. It was a lace dress with a romantic line and low back.  I also wore a blush pink feather bolero and added LK Bennett shoes and Cachet London jewellery.

.

.

Wooden Hill Images

.

.

Wooden Hill Images

.

We opted for a Christmas theme, although we wanted a traditional Christmas wedding and not a commercialised  theme. We used purple as an accent colour and for the bridesmaids.

The wedding was at 3pm so when we left the church at 4.30pm after mulled wine and mince pies it was pitch black with flaming torches lining the churchyard.  Flaming torches lined the mile long road to the reception venue and our musicians, who played throughout the whole day, played flute in amongst the trees when guests arrived, throughout the drinks reception and during the evening dancing.

Each of the twelve tables were decorated to replicate the twelve days of Christmas and we added a 20ft Christmas tree in the centre of the marquee and dry ice to create atmosphere.

The Snow Queens – A Styled Bridal Shoot In North Yorkshire

February 12th, 2013 | Julia Braime

.

I’ve something extra specially sparkly, snowy and gorgeous for you this afternoon.  After enduring weeks of grizzle, grey and slush, I think it’s time we fell back in love with the white stuff… because brides really should love white, now, shouldn’t they?!  This pretty and impromptu styled shoot comes to you courtesy of friend of the wedding blog, Abi, of Wooden Hill Images, and I’m so excited to share the loveliness with you.

The inspiration behind much of my editing comes from both literary classics and the way a photograph can make you feel.  With more and more brides getting married in winter, I thought about the visions of Narnia and snow filled fields and the beauty of wintry ‘costume’.  I called on my good friend Jane from Wedding and Events Floral Design and we decided to seize the moment. We had 48 hours!

Jane contacted and arranged the use of Howebridge Wedding Venue in Sowerby, Thirsk, utilizing the gardens and field.  Brides and Belles, Northallerton so generously offered the use of any of their dresses that fitted our brief and local models were found who would brave the elements! Claire Taylor of the Cake Fairy Company expressed interest in joining us and so we began to draw up a vision of different Snow Queens.

.

On the morning of the shoot, it had snowed harder than anticipated so we had to swap venues as Howebridge was unreachable. Wedding Events and Floral Design offered the use of their gardens and field. With only two models able to get to the shoot, we called on their ability to become all the different Snow Queens that we had envisioned.

With oceans of humour and huge dollop of giddy excitement, our first Snow Queen, Georgia was born. Her world is outdoors, the juxtaposition of interior living, outside. She reads romance, wrapped in luxurious fur, in quiet simplicity.  In contrast Olivia, is a Queen with stylish authority, a billowing bridal gown and a superior air about her.  Bo, a pretty, playful bride with a love of Nordic worlds and with a bejewelled bouquet of brooches and trinkets has an inner smile.  Cordelia (my personal favourite) has an ethereal, frosted quality, from a medieval land her Bridal coat and natural circlet in her hair, encapsulating all things rustic.

.

Unfortunately, as we progressed through the shoot the snow was thawing incredibly fast so we were working to huge time restraints. The cake had to retire inside for fear of being ruined and Snow Queen ‘Katarina’ hasn’t even made the final cut because the snow thawed all over her dress and hair!
