Big Kisses & Bobble Knits: A Real Engagement At Castle Howard – Rachel & Scott

November 4th, 2013 | Julia Braime

Photography By Ally Byrom

Following an extremely busy working weekend, it was high time for some downtime.  C’mon, even a blogging machine like Brides Up North needs some non-screen time.   Since we woke to crisp blue skies,  I spent this morning out and about with my baby girl and her grandparents soaking up the autumn colours, fresh cold air and pretty vistas that surround our Yorkshire home.  A pub lunch and a large Monday lunchtime glass of Sauvignon Blanc (very decadent – your Monday is my Sunday, remember!) and I’m back at home feeling happier, cosier and with distinctly more rosy cheeks.

This afternoon’s feature is full of the good stuff too – pink noses, chunky knits and cute kisses.  And all that wholesome stuff aside, I’m wondering where our bride to be got that fabulous parker jacket.  Total winter coat lust.

Let’s join Rachel and Scott as they share their engagement news with a seasonal shoot at the beautiful Castle Howard.

Rachel says:  The day that Scott proposed was a really sunny day in spring and we decided to go to York for the day.  Scott kept insisting that we go down by the river to find somewhere quiet but I wanted to find a wine bar to enjoy the sunshine.  In the end we stopped on a bench in the park and he pulled out a little blue box and got down on one knee.  I quickly said yes and told him to get up as people started clapping!

We are getting married in June 2014 at Castle Howard.

We met whilst working together travelling Greece.  We were friends to begin with and after many ‘bar dates’ in Greece he finally took me on a real date to a Moroccan restaurant!

After our working holiday I returned home and Scott came to see me for a ‘weekend’ and never went back to London – the rest is history.

I love Scott’s ability to always make me smile and our biggest wish for married life is to stay as happy as we are today.

We chose to have an engagement shoot to get to know our photographer a little more but also to have an idea about what location in the grounds of our venue would be most suitable for photographs on the day of our wedding.

We thoroughly enjoyed the engagement shoot and I think it definitely helped us relax a little bit and act more natural with each other in front of the camera.  We’ll be back to share our Real Wedding story with Brides Up North next year!

It’s the weekend!

.

Unfortunately it’s a half day in the Brides Up North office for me today before meeting friends later on, as I prepare to tackle my burgeoning inbox.   Mustn’t grumble though, there are worse things that an email account bursting to the seams with gorgeous real weddings and inspirational bridal fashion shoots!

.

As I get my nose to the grindstone, I’ll leave you with one such beautiful big day in Yorkshire, sent to me by real bride Kellie and Georgina Harrison Photography.  Be inspired by Kellie & Andrews pretty colour palette and simple but stunning details.

Kellie says: Andrew asked me to marry him in New York, Central Park in December 2010. We were married on 1st June 2012 at The Hospitium, York.

.

The Hospitium is just beautiful! We wanted somewhere with natural beauty and fell in love with the ceremony room the first time we saw it.

My dress was from Broughton’s Bridal in Shadwell, Leeds.

.

My dress had a fitted top, with pleated material, and a semi sweetheart neckline. I had pleated straps added to the dress and some French lace in the middle of the neck line and at the base of the train. The bottom half of the dress was lovely smooth flowing material with a bubble hem and a court train.

.

I carried a bouquet of closed and open ivory roses and white sweet peas by Fiona Hogg Florist.

We wanted a romantic, classic look in the ceremony room, then for the wedding breakfast we opted for a relaxed feel. We went for “just picked” from the country look with the flowers, and a blue colour scheme.

We picked a fondant fancy wedding cake from Bettys Of York.  The top tier was a fruit cake with white icing and three white icing roses. The 2nd and 3rd tiers were white fondant fancy cakes.

Bradshaws of York were the caterers for the wedding breakfast and in the evening we had a traditional Scottish ceilidh by Fiddlerswreck, and a disco by Night Owls.

After the wedding we went for a mini-moon to Scotland. Later in the year we plan to go to Canada.

Scottish Thistles & Yorkshire Roses! A Real Wedding In York – Katie & Rob

May 9th, 2012 | Julia Braime

.

I’m a little busy hosting the Brides Up North Tweet Up North East right now, so I thought I would leave you with this gorgeous Scottish Real Wedding in Yorkshire, sent to me by real bride Katie and J Clitheroe Photography.

.

Men in kilts alert! Enjoy!

.

.

A Scottish Wedding In York By J Clitheroe Photography

.

.

Katie says:  We got engaged at the top of the London Eye in August 2010, and were married on 31st July 2011.  Our wedding ceremony was at St. Mary’s Church in Riccall near York and our reception was at The Royal York Hotel, York.

We chose the venue as I had attended functions there before, the people were really helpful when we looked round and the price was really good.  The grounds are just beautiful.

.

.

.

.

It was actually a very traditional wedding with a Scottish theme as the men wore kilts and I had thistles in my bouquet.  Our colour scheme was purple and Modern Douglas Blue tartan.

I chose a cream lace strapless fitted dress by Maggie Sottero from Elizabeth of York.  I carried a cascading bouquet of cream roses, freesias and thistles by Fulford Flowers of York.

.

My bridesmaids wore purple knee-length shift dresses from Hobbs. My younger bridesmaid wore a cream dress from John Lewis.

.

The men’s kilts were hired from Debenhams.

Rob’s father wrote the orders of service and the invitations by hand.

The tables at the reception were named after our favourite childhood authors – we wrote an explanation under each one as to why we’d chosen it.

.

.

.

.

Myself and my sister-in-law baked gingerbread people as the wedding favours.  Instead of names for place settings, we used pictures of us with the person and wrote on the back where the picture was from and why we chose it.

.

.

.

.

The speeches were excellent. The best man had a slideshow of photos of him and Rob as they have known each other since they were born which charted their friendship – it was very funny and touching.

.

.

.

.

My brother played guitar in the church as we were signing the register.  At the reception, we had a disco and a live band – The International Party Doctors.  I really enjoyed the evening reception as there were some people we hadn’t seen in a long time.

.

.

.

.

After the wedding, we honeymooned in Mauritius.

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to enjoy yourself – it will be the best day of your life!

Be prepared for your face to hurt a lot from smiling so much!

Love is Simple, a Real Wedding – Sofia & Jim

February 1st, 2011 | Julia Braime

.

Brides Up North’s newest Featured Supplier, the wonderful York Place Studios, sent another gorgeous Real Wedding to my inbox.  I love the simplicity of this Yorkshire wedding.

.

.

York Place Studios

.

.

Dominique of York Place Studios sets the scene: There are few places in the UK steeped in so
much history as the beautiful city of York. Originally founded by the Roman’s in 71AD it’s eventful past is evident for all to see as you walk throughout the city. From the Viking centre through the Norman castle walls a
nd the Tudor housing of the Shambles, York’s heritage engulfs you even as its beauty entrances you. This is a place of national historical interest, but it’s a more personal history that led Sofia and Jim to choose to celebrate their love in the heart of the ancient town.

This is where they found one another. This is where they shared their first kiss. This is where
they fell in love.

They love the city and know it like the back of their hands. He grew up here and, though the pair had chosen a classically English wedding, it was clear that Sofia’s Mexican roots remained dear to her heart as she chose a stylish white gown: the weave an infusion of British tradition and Spanish flair.

From the moment she greeted us to the moment we left, Sofia’s smile simply stole the show.  She emitted a radiance that couldn’t help but lighten the room and everyone else around her, a smile matched only by
the one that spread across Jim’s face as he turned to see his bride walk own the aisle.

As they left the room together for the first time as husband and wife, the love surrounding them was tangible. Together they are such a perfect couple, so in love, and so clearly adored by their friends and family.

It was a beautiful setting in the gardens of York registry office but we stole Mr and Mrs Murphy briefly away  for a more intimate shoot. Sofia and Jim whisked us away on a tour down the back streets of York, using their expert local knowledge of the classic tourist spots and deeper into the heart of York’s history.
