Today’s real wedding that shows how the old can be mixed with the new for a romantic and elegant big day that ticks all the boxes.
Laura and James enjoyed a traditional church wedding ceremony before travelling to Liverpool’s city centre for a sophisticated reception at newly opened hotel, 30 James Street. The muted colour palette resulted in a chic wedding with hints of gold adding simple touches of glamour throughout.
In her quest for the perfect dress, Laura tried on more than 50 designs but it’s easy to see how her stunning Enzoani gown put an end to the search. What a dream dress!

laura says: We got engaged in Amsterdam on 17th March 2012. James had planned to propose whilst away for the weekend and wanted it to be romantic but was so nervous he blurted it out as soon as we had checked into the hotel room – thankfully he was on one knee!
The date of our wedding was Saturday 23rd August 2014 at 30 James Street hotel in Liverpool. It was a new hotel only opening in the June and so we were one of the first to marry there. Our ceremony was held at St Sebastian’s Church, which is James’ family parish.
We wanted the day to be sophisticated and glamourous with a theme that would suit the summer season. We also wanted to be very modern but with a classic wedding look.
For the colour scheme we chose neutrals of whites and nudes with gold. My mum had bought an outfit for the wedding in America which was white and gold and so I wanted my bridesmaids to match.
James wore a black tuxedo with an ivory waistcoat and cravat from the MyTuxedo website. The groomsmen wore matching tuxedos to James but with champagne coloured waistcoats and cravats.
To fit in with the rest of the wedding party, my bridesmaids wore champagne chiffon embellished gowns from American website, unique-vintage.com.
On the wedding day we travelled in a 1946 Rolls Royce silver Wraith and also hired a Daimler limousine for the bridesmaids and parents from Birkdale Classics.
Mick Cookson Photography, who we would highly recommend, captured the day for us. He but us at ease on the day but was totally unobtrusive. The photographs speak for themselves, we were delighted with them!
My bouquet was made up of white, nude and peach flowers including David Austin roses provided by Heather Feather from Flower Fashion Wedding & Event Styling. It also had a photo charm attached to it with a photo of my Nan inside who had passed away two years earlier.
In terms of floral décor, we had large displays in vases in the wedding reception with the same coloured flowers as the bouquets. These were also made by Heather, who was amazing!
As favours we gave each of our guests a lottery ticket which was placed in a handmade holder made by Crystal Couture Bespoke Wedding Stationery, who also made all of our reception stationery. They were fabulous and their attention to detail was outstanding!
Our four tier vintage style cake was made by the very talented Kate Kane from Delicious Cakes.
To keep guests entertained we had Tony and Chris from 80s rock band The Real People to perform as The Real Deal. James is a huge Oasis fan and The Real People wrote and recorded with Oasis. We also had our family friend John Devine to DJ.
Special touches on the day included having photos of guests in frames on the tables instead of name tags and we also had a ‘love story’ board which featured key dates on for myself and James as a couple.
We would absolutely recommend our wedding venue to other brides and grooms. The reception main hall is so stunning and is brimming with character. Everything went really smoothly on the day. The staff were very polite and helpful, especially Lisa the wedding coordinator who was fantastic throughout.
There were too many favourite parts of the wedding day to name them all but definitely the reception with all our family and friends sharing our special day with us and also all on the dance floor together was a highlight.
Following the wedding we went on a twin honeymoon to Dubai and Kuramathi Island in The Maldives. Kuramathi is the most beautiful place that we have ever been to! From the white sandy beach to the beautiful sunset cruise and everything in between, it was perfect!
My top tip for other Brides Up North is to thoroughly enjoy the experience, especially the day itself as it goes so quickly!
