Can you give us a little overview of The Wedding of my Dreams?

gemma says: I’m the younger half of the mother and daughter team who founded The Wedding of my Dreams in 2010. My amazing mum, Karen Morgan, runs the award winning wedding florist Passion for Flowers, which I got more and more involved with after graduating from uni. I’d help on busy weekends picking up floristry skills as I went along, learning only from the best, and developed a real passion for floristry, styling weddings and to be honest everything wedding related! My job at the time was in digital marketing and social media, I knew a thing or two

At the time Passion for Flowers couples were hiring an array of props and decorations from us to complement their florals, saying they couldn’t find anything as lovely elsewhere in the market. Mum and I both love sourcing decorations and wanted couples all over the country to have access to the props and decorations we had searched so hard to find and so The Wedding of my Dreams was born.

Going into business with my mum was the best decision I’ve ever made, we both love going to work every day and both now work across the two companies. It’s so rewarding to see how far we’ve come and how both businesses have blossomed. All the hard work and late nights have really paid off. In 2015 Passion for Flowers was voted best wedding florist in England in The Wedding Industry Awards and The Wedding of my Dreams has won numerous awards since its launch.

Why is styling so important to a wedding and what advice would you offer to wedding couples when deciding on how to style their wedding day?

When choosing your wedding style choose something that reflects you as a couple, it is important to choose a venue that reflects this style too, as the venue sets the scene for the entire day. For example, if you love nature and country walks perhaps an informal barn venue is a good choice, stick to a natural style, including natural elements, textures and colours for your décor. Hessian or linen table runners, wooden boxes of seasonal flowers for centrepieces and quirky signs to direct guest. Or if you see yourselves as a more glamourous couple, perhaps a grand manor house is more suited to you. Statement florals in urns and lavish centrepieces teamed with silver or gold touches.

In what ways do you offer styling inspiration through The Wedding of my Dreams?

As well as our online shop we have our blog, which way of passing on our styling advice as a number of our team have backgrounds in wedding styling.

We love inspiring our customers and coming up with Pinterest- perfect ideas you can copy or adapt to style your own weddings, we do this through our styled shoots. As well as our own shoots we work closely with magazines, photographers, venues and other stylists who are looking for those extra special details for their own shoots. We love that our industry friends love our décor as much as we do, and it’s always fab to see how they use our decorations in their own unique way, giving you guys even more styling inspiration.

For venues that don’t allow candles can you suggest an alternative way to achieve a desirable ambience through décor and styling?

We find that often venues don’t allow naked flames, but are often ok if tea lights are placed within tea light holders and votives, we have a large variety of these available in different styles and colours. Larger pillar candles are usually ok if used within lanterns.

If there is a strict no candles policy at your venue you could opt for faux pillar candles, which look really affective. They are considerably more expensive than normal candles but you can keep them forever. Alternatively, ditch candles completely and go for different lighting, how about festival style lights throughout your venue or fairy lights wrapped around beams of a barn venue?

What wedding themes and colour schemes are proving popular with wedding couples right now and can you forecast any upcoming wedding styling trends?

At the moment rustic styling is still a popular choice for our couples, with elegant mercury silver not far behind. For the summer pressed glass is proving a popular choice, as well as pastel shades with dusky pink and dusky blue a favourite with our couples this year.

Metallics are looking like they will be popular this year and next with golds, bronzes and coppers making an appearance. Some couples are also choosing to mix a pastel shade with a metallic, for example blush pink and gold or dusky blue and copper.

Where do you source the products from that you sell and are any products in particular proving popular with your brides?

Our wedding collection started small but has grown and grown, we hand select each and every decoration you see on our website. Some of our decorations are hand crafted here in the UK by talented individuals, others we have sourced from our travels around the globe, and the rest are designed by us in house and created exclusively for us.

At the moment our most popular items for rustic weddings are our wooden tree slices, these can be used for centrepieces or for wedding cakes. And for a more elegant look our antique silver footed bowls are another popular choice, these look stunning in the centre of the table whether you are asking your florist to fill them or having a go yourself. For little extras bud vase name cards holders are always a favourite, you can add a tiny bloom to them and for a fun wedding favour, how about our shot glasses – fill them yourself with drink of your choice.

What sets you apart from other wedding styling décor shops?

I think the fact we work with real couples through our floral design business keeps us in touch with what engaged couples actually want and are sourcing for their weddings. If they can’t find something they would love and we think it will be popular, we do our best to source it and add it to our range so it becomes available for everyone. We are always on the lookout for new trends and new ideas too, so we can inspire our couples with something they might not have thought of but just have to have.

Every week through Passion for Flowers we set up floral creations and style venues so know what works and what doesn’t. It sounds simple, but for example, we know venues don’t always like confetti so our real petal confetti is completely biodegradable, and we know what height centrepieces need to be so they don’t completely block the view of the person opposite! It’s just the little things but everything we source is individually chosen and we make sure they fit the brief.
