Having battled through the dark and bitter months, we think it’s safe to say we’re all in the mood for a holiday. And we’re afraid today’s post is only going to make you want to reach for your credit card, sunnies and passport even more, as we talk honeymoon destinations.
The planning of any getaway usually takes time and consideration, though perhaps none more so than when it comes to boking your honeymoon. As the first break together as a married couple you will be in your cloud nine bubble of bliss and so romance, relaxation and possibly a dash of adventure is required.
But where to go to make those holiday memories of a lifetime? Well certain factors will always come into play, mainly being budget, annual leave allowance and climates and conditions during the time at which you plan to visit – let us all actively dodge any hurricane seasons.
From there it needs to be something that suits the two of you, and that will deliver on what you are wanting to get out of this special holiday – culture, exploring and activities versus sunbathing, sailing and poolside cocktails, or you could of course plan a trip that is a winning combination of the two.
To help inspire your choices, we’ve rounded up the details of the just-married trips of our recently featured real wedding couples on Brides Up North, which vary from cosy UK staycations to long-haul luxury breaks. The minimoon continues to rise in popularity with many of our brides and grooms taking a short city break straight after their big day and delaying the main honeymoon until a little later down the line – after all, why have one holiday when you can have two!

Lizzie says: We chose an American road trip for our honeymoon, starting in Vegas and then heading to the west coast in a convertible. We experienced so much in those two weeks and it was all just so surreal to see it all. We stopped in a total of nine places seeing the likes of San Diego, LA, Malibu, Sonoma and ending in San Francisco. We really did live the American dream.
Natasha says: We decided to go to Sorrento in Italy as it looked so beautiful – and it really was! Our hotel overlooked the island of Capri and it was stunning. We spent our days lying by the pool or by our own lagoon and in the evenings we explored the town of Sorrento, finding amazing little restaurants surrounded by lemon trees, eating pizza and drinking red wine, then finishing off with any flavour of gelato we fancied!
Jen says: We went to Japan for three weeks straight after the wedding. It was an incredible trip and we are already planning on going back. The food was amazing, the culture was fascinating, and it was just a beautiful place. Plus, we thoroughly enjoyed the Japanese karaoke!
Amy says: A couple of days after the wedding we went on our minimoon to Santorini, Greece. We just wanted a sunshine break to chill and come back down the earth.
We are going on our main honeymoon soon. We will be visiting Antigua, New Orleans and ending up in New York again. We loved New York anyway but it now holds so many nice memories for us.
Charlotte says: We went on a little minimoon to Venice for a couple of days after our wedding. It was a beautiful escape getting lost in the meandering streets and finding bars to celebrate with an Aperol Spritz or two. I think we were doing around 25,000 steps a day and Venice is the perfect romantic city to get lost in.
For our main honeymoon we knew that we both had wanted to go travelling when leaving university but never had the opportunity. So, we decided on a three-week trip exploring Thailand and Vietnam. It was pretty full on, catching ten flights in 21 days. It was magical and unlike anywhere we had ever visited before. We explored Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Phu Quoc, to the beautiful limestone islands of Ha Long Bay and the modern Ho Chi Minh. We then flew back to Thailand, spending time in Phuket, Ko Lanta, Phi Phi and Bangkok. It was laidback, relaxed and quirky, with beautiful beaches and landscapes.
Hannah says: We went on a minimoon to Palma a few days after the wedding so we didn’t get brought back down to earth straight away.
We’ve booked to visit Sri Lanka and the Maldives on our main honeymoon. This has given us something to look forward to and has extended the wedding feeling as well as giving us two weeks of winter sun. We really wanted to do something once in a lifetime so have planned lots of exploring during our nine days in Sri Lanka and then total relaxation once we reach the Maldives.
Alice says: We went on an amazing honeymoon to Kenya and Zanzibar. We started with three days of safari in Kenya which was incredible and then spent ten days relaxing on the beach in Zanzibar. Absolute bliss! We booked the honeymoon through Destinology who I would 100% recommend, they made it totally stress-free and easy, and made sure we got lots of lovely extras for being on our honeymoon.
Lindsay says: We had a little minimoon in Crete at a resort called Stella Island the week after.
We want to honeymoon next year, but we can’t decide or agree on a destination, it’s between India and Vietnam at the moment.
Louise says: We headed to Rome on the Tuesday after the wedding for four days, just Andy and I, while the grandparents were on duty with Alice. We walked miles, drank gallons of wine and walked the same old streets as Julius Caesar! A bit of culture and nitty gritty history in the colosseum was fascinating to imagine and the Vatican, which is a city in a city was so humbling. I still wonder how Italians manage to eat so much pasta without putting on weight though!
Sarah says: Two days after the wedding we jetted off to Cancun, Mexico. We stayed at Secrets Silversands, an adult-only resort. It was pure luxury. The weather, staff, food and drink were perfect. It was great to have two weeks away together straight after the wedding. Whilst there we went on a couple of excursions, visiting local islands and also some speed boat and jet ski adventures.
Rebecca says: We went to the Maldives and stayed on a water villa which was absolutely breathtaking. I have never seen such an amazing place, the seas were crystal clear and the sands were so soft. The staff were so friendly which made the honeymoon even better. We snorkeled straight from our room most mornings and swam with small sharks. Some days we would just sit in our jacuzzi taking in the view having a glass of wine. The concierge soon realised I loved rosé, so he made sure I had extra bottles. We also spent a lovely evening having a candlelit dinner on the beach on our own. I cannot recommend it enough, it was a holiday of a lifetime.
Jessica says: We left two days after the wedding to travel around Sri Lanka for ten days, taking trains, buses, tuk-tuks and taxis all around the south of the island. We saw elephants, blue whales and the most stunning views we’ve ever seen. The last three days were spent in Dubai, which was a good way to readjust back to a life where palm squirrels can’t get in through the roof.
Sarah says: We took a minimoon to the Lake District straight after the wedding. We stayed at the Gilpin Lodge near Windermere and dined at their Michelin star HRiSHi restaurant. It was an impeccable stay, and if we’re lucky enough, we’ll go back each year for our anniversary!
Nicole says: For our honeymoon we went to Bali which was a good mix of relaxation and adventure – just perfect for us. This was the only job I asked my husband to do. I was more than happy to deal with the whole wedding as long as he planned us a wonderful honeymoon. And he definitely delivered. We did everything from jotting around on the back of mopeds, surfing, quad biking, to seeing cheeky monkeys and washing elephants in beautiful sanctuaries, as well as snorkelling with turtles in just inches of clear blue ocean and watching the breath-taking sunsets of these magical islands with cold beers and sangria. We partied everywhere from cosmopolitan roof top sky lounges to crammed little bars with amazing live bands. I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.
Michaela says: We had a five-day minimoon in Sevilla straight after the wedding. As it was so close to Christmas we wanted to be back to celebrate with family. It was great to escape somewhere a bit warmer and take in the sights and history of the city. The food and drink were amazing – so many fantastic restaurants and tapas bars.
We have booked to go away for our full honeymoon for three weeks starting in Hong Kong for the first week and travelling to different areas in Japan for the other two.
Nic says: In the week after the wedding we went to Ibiza for four nights on our minimoon. Ibiza was on both our lists of places to visit so it was a perfect location for a short break after the wedding. It was unforgettable! We really spoilt ourselves staying in an incredible hotel and ate and drank in great places every day. It was a total chill out luxury break, exactly what we needed after the wedding. We relaxed, talked about the wedding all the time and relived every moment as photos from the day were sent to us form all the guests. We loved it.
We are having our main honeymoon in the new year. We’re enjoying having the time to think about where we want to go and how we want to do it. But so far all we know is we want to wake up to a view of paradise!
Amber says: For our honeymoon, we started off in San Francisco, and went to Alcatraz, The Museum of Ice Cream, Foreign Cinema, Walt Disney Museum, cycled the Golden Gate Bridge and saw some sea lions! We then stopped at Monterey and visited the Aquarium. Other highlights on our honeymoon included Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara, where we ate some fantastic food and went sea kayaking and Malibu, where we went on a wine safari and fed a giraffe, stayed in a ranch and ate some amazing lobster on the beach! We also visited Santa Monica, the Hollywood walk of fame and Universal Studios. Our next stop was Disneyland LA for five days, ‘The Happiest Place on Earth’! We went to Mickey’s not so scary Halloween party and we dressed up as Ariel and Prince Eric! We ended our dream honeymoon in Mexico for one week and enjoyed dinner on the beach, swimming with sting rays, and lots of sunbathing and cocktails.
Alexandra says: We visited Australia and New Zealand on our honeymoon. We started the trip celebrating New Year’s Eve on a party boat in Sydney Harbour, then spent time on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane. After that, we travelled to Auckland in New Zealand and then on to the stunning Bay of Islands. It was the trip of a lifetime and we will never forget it!
Mary says: We went to Lapland in Finland for our minimoon, and our honeymoon to St Lucia is yet to come. Finland was incredible – we booked it as we hoped to see the Northern Lights, and we both enjoy active holidays. We went on Northern Lights excursions each evening and stayed in an aurora lodge with a glass roof so that we could even watch the Northern Lights whilst lying in bed. We stayed there for three nights and were very lucky to see them every night. Every time we had to pinch ourselves We also fitted in lots of wintery activities including ice fishing, husky dog sledging, snow mobiling and snow shoeing. It was totally different to any other trip we have been on, and we’d love to go back.
Rebecca says: We went to New York for Thanksgiving (it was freezing – the coldest on record!) followed by ten nights chilling out on the beach in Barbados. We were lucky enough to swim with turtles.
