Inline with faster paced wedding dress trends, we’re seeing bridal hair and beauty looks expand beyond traditionalism with edgy, fashion-forward styling coming into play and classic crowd-pleasers given a contemporary update.

Keen to keep our finger on that bridal beauty pulse, we’ve invited Brides Up North Featured Supplier, North-East based makeup artist Alexandra J Edgar, to the blog to reveal which key looks are filtering themselves from bridal designer and fashion house runways through to the aisle for modern brides-to-be.

But fear not, these are 100% wearable with a place for sweet and timeless dewy skin, nude lips and peachy tones as well as more striking trends such as a statement lip, feathered detailing and metallic lids. Ok, so maybe save the latter for the evening party, but you catch our drift and we certainly think that Alexandra’s other on-point looks – as featured in Issue 11 of UNVEILED magazine – are worthy of a shot at your pre-wedding trial!

Can you give us a brief overview of the services that you offer to brides?

Alexandra says: I am a professional skincare and makeup artist specialising in getting brides ready for their big day (along with their bridal party). With more 18 years’ experience you are in very good hands to ensure you look and feel your most radiant and, of course, photograph beautifully, minus a heavily made up feel. As an independent consultant for Arbonne, I am able to assist with all matters of nutritional supplements, luxury skincare, makeup – and let’s not forget bath and body. Oh, it is all vegan too!

Why would you encourage brides to hire a professional makeup artist for their big day?

As a bride-to-be you usually have at least a year of planning and outsourcing to find the perfect makeup artist for you. Your wedding morning is a time to relax in expert hands and actually enjoy yourself. Hiring my professional makeup service ensures you can rest assured you and your bridal party will feel beautiful and confident to enjoy your wedding day.

In your opinion why is makeup such an important part of a bride’s big day look?

Makeup applied correctly is a deal breaker in how you will feel for the rest of the day. It’s such a privilege to get a bride ready knowing she feels her ‘best self’. All our insecurities melt away allowing us to focus on the person we love, feeling our amazing and facing all our family, friends and our photographer and videographer. Who feels their best in their day to day? The same quick look to get out of the door on time. This is your wedding day! Your look is vitally important to wear your gown with confidence, rock that veil and go feel beautiful. If you have ever gone to try on gowns with your everyday look, you will know exactly what I am talking about. You feel under dressed and insecurities can creep in. Having a professional makeup application ensures your best, most radiant self. In fact, why not come for your trial pre-dress fitting to ensure you feel fabulous for that part of the planning too.

Where would you advise brides to take inspiration for their wedding makeup?

Brides should take inspiration from everywhere. A beautiful scent, your favourite quotes, flowers, catwalk designers, a cool girl you see on the street, music, laughter and love.

Would you say that you have a signature look or a style of makeup that you particularly enjoy creating?

The style I am best known and admired from my clients for is an effortlessly radiant, can’t-feel-it-on-your-skin look. I swear I have so many compliments from clients that they feel quite like themselves yet look and feel their most beautiful. To empower a woman, bride, mother or grandmother in this way is the most rewarding career I could wish for.

What current trends in fashion makeup are you noticing making their way from catwalk models to brides-to-be?

I can’t tell you how excited I am that makeup trends are progressing and evolving seasonally all the while, centred around glowing, dewy skin that is definitely here to stay. Skin is in ladies! It is a true beauty goal and I can help you achieve it!

For the accompanying UNVEILED shoot images can you give us an overview of the makeup looks you created?

It was such an honour to provide my makeup services for The Influencer Edit of UNVEILED, Issue 11. I was delighted to have the opportunity to showcase catwalk looks to provide a real designer feel to complement the collections of Halfpenny London and Charlie Brear, two leading UK designers.

Let me tell you what inspired me to show you a few looks outside the typical ‘bridal look’ box. Firstly, Prada took my breath away on the SS19 Catwalks. With the nod to the 1960s we saw stunning clumpy mascara and feathered eyeshadow polished off with a nude lip. This mascara look was also seen at Moschino, Etro and Fendi and it’s huge for AW19. This was a dream to create my version to show a pretty new approach to eyes.

Secondly, chrome is in and it’s not going away any time soon. In fact, chrome turns glitter for AW19 but for this shoot I drew inspiration from the bridal catwalks at Berta. Chrome eyeshadow was thickly applied with a stunning 90s style nude lip.

A personal favourite was the opportunity to showcase the bridal Reem Acra cat eye, created with foil for a dramatic silver eyeliner. This was also seen at Emporio Armani. I think it is the most beautiful look to take a bride from ceremony to party, looks so glamorous and photographs like a dream.

Next was the ethereal simplicity of the ‘peaches and cream’ look which was directly inspired from Antonio Marras and the bridal designer Danielle Frankel. Matching peach eyes and lips looked effortlessly chic paired with the stunning complexion I prepped and created.

Last but in no way means least, was a classic look that will endure all decades. The timeless red lip. The catwalks of fashion house Christian Dior, Escada and bridal catwalk Galia Lahav showed little more than the classic ruby red lip, be it matte or sheer it is here to stay ladies; timeless and effortless and oh so glamorous!

What were your star products when creating these looks?

Firstly, I prepped the lovely model Charlotte’s skin using Arbonne RE9 Advanced Prepwork with a Beloved eye mask first. The RE9 Advanced Prepwork Gel Eye Masks are £48 and contain a moisture boosting superfood cocktail of antioxidants, omegas and phytonutrients to soften the look of baby lines around the eyes. I use these on every model and bride I work with!

Secondly, that stunning complexion is created using Arbonne Pollution Defence CC Cream SPF 30, which costs £34. It is literally an extension of the skincare with 13 in 1 ingredients to create a breathable second skin. It is so lightweight whilst giving a medium coverage for that sought-after radiant finish that photographs beautifully.

What are key colour palettes for eyes and lips for 2019?

The key colour palettes for eyes are peach, pink and silver. For lips were talking red or nude.

And what about base makeup – are we going to see more matt or dewy complexions?

Ladies, the skin is your ultimate beauty goal. This stunning radiant, dewy complexion is firmly here to stay, and I am thrilled about it. We just seen the launch the Arbonne Healthy Skin Within Skin Elixir Collagen Builder with Hyaluronic Acid, costing £45 for 30 sachets. I just bought it and it is magic from the inside out. The vegan formula contains a skin boosting botanical blend to build collagen and neutralise the nasties that cause wrinkles. It is literally a super water for your skin, your daily dose of inner loving care to maintain skins elasticity, smooth texture, plumpness and glow. I’ll be letting you know all about it in my next blog in September!

What style of makeup would you suggest for a contemporary bride wanting a model look?

If fancy a contemporary look and you are spoilt for choice. Not only are the current looks exquisite they are indeed timeless. Check out Berta, that chrome ticks all the boxes and looks great on nails too.

What styles of weddings are you particularly enjoying at the moment?

I absolutely loved the Brides Up North Wedfest’19 wedding shows at Hardwick Hall and Stockeld Park this summer. These festival inspired events where I exhibited were truly magical and I personally can’t think of anything better than a wedding celebration in a tipi, fire pits blazing, amazing singer and band, sunshine (or rain) a stunning table, hippy flowers and all your loved ones. Like the best private party ever! I do also love timeless elegance though at stunning venues such as Lartington Hall and Matfen Hall.

What would be your top three beauty tips for brides-to-be?

  1. Invest in great skincare
  2. Take skin boosting supplements
  3. Be Happy. The happiest girls are the prettiest said someone – and it’s true.
