Untamed Love: North & Wild Events

13th May 2021 | Sarah Symonds

We’ve tracked down the lovely Sophie from North & Wild Events to chat all things boho weddings and we think you’re going to love this week’s insider peek into the business of one of our amazing UNVEILED Network Members.

First things first, in today’s feature we’ve covered the definitions of both styling and the concept of bohemian itself. A veritable fountain of knowledge, Sophie’s a believer in flowing fabrics, tumbling wildflowers, glorious greenery, and adding texture wherever possible.

If you’ve always wondered why you might need a wedding stylist, or what the role of a stylist is exactly, this is the info you’ve been waiting for. In the wholly overwhelming process that is wedding planning, it can be unbelievably helpful to start handing some of that responsibility over to a pro, knowing that they get your vision and can help bring it to life with their stash of amazing props and decor. Sounds amazing, right?

Over to you, Sophie!

Hey there!

I’m Sophie, I’m the owner of North & Wild Events, a boho inspired prop and decor hire and styling service based in South Yorkshire, covering most of the UK.

Where did your passion for styling come from?

I always wanted to become a wedding and event stylist. I can remember growing up I used to say I wished there was a job out there that involved ‘decorating weddings’. I didn’t know a wedding stylist even existed at that stage, it was only when I was helping Mark figure out how to kick start his photography business that I had a bit of a eureka moment via instagram and realised that it does exist and that it was something I wanted to pursue.

I started small and started to collect boho inspired items that people could simply hire for their wedding or event. Eventually I started to style the pieces and here we are today! Completely self-taught!

What are the main benefits of hiring an event stylist?

A stylist is focused solely on the client and is there to make sure you get the look and vibe you want. We will make sure your wedding is different to everyone else’s. Who wants to be stuck with the same ceremony setup and wedding breakfast layout as every other couple?

What happens when you know you love beautifully boho styled weddings and have hundreds of images on your Pinterest boards, but have no idea how to pull that look off? Yep, that’s right, call in a stylist! We provide all of the props from our own range or source anything specific you need. From that romantic ceremony set up with candles and amazing backdrops, to the perfect tablescapes with beautiful table runners, crockery, and stunning centrepieces – these details transform a standard wedding into an incredible one that will leave your guests talking about it for years to come. Not to mention providing a stunning setting for your wedding photos!

It can be overwhelming trying to style a wedding yourself, especially on the day! Let’s face it, do you really want to be halfway up a ladder hanging lights on the morning of your wedding? We will set everything up to perfection on the day, and then take everything away again at the end of the day. This allows you to elevate the look of your day AND ditch the stress so you can enjoy your day knowing everything is taken care of. How good is that?

In what ways can you assist couples?

We offer a complete styling and hire package to all our couples. They can have the benefit of a wedding/event stylist as well as having full access to our prop and decor collection and our knowledge on how to style them.

We start by creating an overall wedding concept through mood boards and visual aids, eventually sourcing and corresponding with all suppliers required for styling, for example florists, stationers etc. We look to source any additional items or decor, and lastly manage and oversee all styling-related set up on the day including room turnaround if required.

Do you have a signature style?

I wouldn’t say we have a signature style however it is definitely quite non-traditional and inspired by the free-spirited bohemian. Whether your setting is the beach, a pretty woodland, a festival style field or a cool and quirky venue, boho can work.

If you search on Wikipedia the word bohemian, it gives this definition of bohemianism: ‘Bohemianism is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people, with few permanent ties, involving musical, artistic or literary pursuits. In this context, Bohemians can be wanderers, adventurers, or vagabonds’.

How can this be translated to weddings? Most bohemian themes or styles are inspired by 1970’s flair. Think flowing fabrics, wildflowers, gorgeous greenery, and extra bouts of texture on the tables. This can be translated to any venue; any colour scheme and it can still be combined with the more traditional wedding ideas.

What colours and themes are popular with couples at the moment?

I think a boho inspired wedding is very popular at the minute. But the term ‘bohemian wedding’ is so broad, I think it’s more about couples taking a more relaxed approach to weddings and breaking away from tradition, which we love.

Sustainability is huge at the moment! I think up-cycling is such a good way to inject this into your wedding and I love that some of the furniture pieces we have for hire are from the 60’s and 70’s and we’ve just brought them back to life. Maybe they will get another 50 or even 100 years out of them! I think sustainability in the wedding and events industry will only continue to grow.

How do you ensure that the weddings you style are unique to each couple?

I think being able to create a visual aid as a stylist is so important, as it allows you both to understand whether or not you are having the same vision and gives you the opportunity to make changes and make sure that you are on the same page. Encouraging people to add some of their own personality into their wedding is important, or even if it’s just small personal touches like different ways they can incorporate a loved one who is no longer with us. One of my couples has a lovely idea which is to add their grandparents’ favourite flowers into the wedding. Those little details make each wedding different to the next.

Is there anything else that you would like to tell us about?

A 5m bell tent will soon be added to our list of hire items and we will be including hen party options as well as wedding day hire, which is super exciting!
