Hi Kate!

Hi, I’m Kate, founder and creative director at Kate Clare Couture. I design wedding dresses, veils and accessories for the free-spirited, fashion-loving, modern bride.

Where did your passion for design come from?

I’ve always been into fashion, art and design, and from a young age, I knew this was the path I wanted to follow. After studying for a degree in fashion and gaining work experience at Vogue, I then worked in costume, firstly for Opera North and then as a freelancer in TV and theatre. Along the way, I made many wedding dresses, including my own. I wanted to combine all my knowledge of luxury fabric, design and creating for individuals to set up a business designing and making bridalwear for brides looking for something different!

Why do you love working in bridal?

It’s very creative, and I get to work with beautiful fabrics and make one-of-a-kind dresses for brides to treasure. I love working with brides creating something special and individual to match their wedding dreams.

Do you have a signature style?

I would say my style is feminine, delicate and fashion-led but often influenced by vintage styles. I make everything with sustainability in mind.

Tell us about your latest designs?

Using beautiful silks, satins, delicate tulles and intricate handmade detailing, the designs are influenced by a nod to vintage and include lots of pretty details.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Lots of places; fashion trends, vintage sewing books, my love of 1960’s/1970’s, musicians, art, free-spirits, friends, artists, television and film!

What sort of client do your wedding gowns appeal to?

Modern fashionable brides who want something individual, cool and luxurious yet sustainably made in the UK.

What materials and techniques do you use in your creations?

I use a variety of high-quality fabrics and trims sourced as locally as possible with a move to sustainable fabrics. I hand make everything from design, pattern cutting through to making and fitting the garment to ensure it’s what the bride wants and is to a high, luxurious standard with a personal touch.

Tell us about the process of working with you – what can a client expect?

A personal and relaxed yet professional approach. I like to get to know what the client truly likes and wants and also what will suit and make them feel a million dollars on their wedding day.

What is the feedback like from clients?

I love to hear feedback from my lovely brides. They love the fine quality of the dresses and how I work with them to create something amazing with great fit and attention to detail.

What trends do you see emerging for 2022 and beyond?

TV shows like Bridgerton have had an influence, so maybe a move to corset styles but also clean, modern lines. I think a move to individuality and sustainability too.

Who would you love to see wearing one of your designs?

Jodie Comer or someone from Haim!

What is your proudest career moment to date?

Working with all my brides makes me feel proud! I feel like I’m always learning and progressing and have always put my all into everything I’ve done. I’m proud to have worked at the top level of my professions and hope to achieve that in bridal eventually, too!

What’s next for your brand?

A new collection and then hopefully getting stocked in some of the top wedding boutiques as well as continuing to provide top-level personal service in my studio.

Is there a special discount that you would like to offer our readers?

Yes! I’d love to offer readers 5% off any wedding dress; just mention Brides up North!
